I'm pretty "meh" when it comes to cities but when I visited Albuquerque a few years ago I was really blown away. I'm from the Southeast and coming from the swamps it was so different from anything I had seen before. Everything down to the highways look different. I really liked it.

Hi Priscilla; Albuquerque was founded in 1706 by Governor of New Mexico, the Spaniard don Francisco Cuervo y Valdez like (La Villa de Alburquerque). It's was named in honor to (Francisco Fernández de la Cueva y de la Cueva, the tenth Duke of Alburquerque) Viceroy of the Nueva España (New Spain). And that is why it is known as the city of the duke. Later, Alburquerque would lose the first r because English speakers can't pronounce the r properly. You should know much of the western and southwestern from United States (California, Colorado, Nevada, Montana, Arizona, Utah, Texas, New Mexico, Florida, and Louisiana) was Spanish territory (Nueva España) until 1821 when the speaking-Spanish countries gained independence from Spain. Later would be mexican territory until 1912. I hope I've helped you. Greetings from España (Spain, Europe).

I lived in Albuquerque for about 4 years and I miss it. For those of who who didn't still get alot about Albuquerque, It is a massive city, going near the Sandia Mountains, or somewhere near that. Another thing is sometimes the temperatures go above 90, which wasn't so great for me. It also has a surprising amount of grass, unlike what you see from a far view. It also has a Nuclear Museum, which is really cool. Albuquerque is a really big, beautiful city when you live in a high area, looking down on it at night. Although this might seem great, there is a few problems. I'm pretty sure the city has a high crime rate, and there are lots of homeless people who we should feel bad for. Also, there are lots of car crashes from what I've seen.

In general US cities tend to be less walkable further to the west, so is Albuquerque. Moreover historically half of ABQ metro population live in suburbs. Also due to high crime in downtown and central avenue areas not so many development happens there. Last decade with new urban trends some development is awakening in the area (BRT system launched, some condos were built), but not as much as it should be.

Let’s enjoy the nature around us. The more we build the less enjoyable it’s going to be. By the way we don’t need to have any tall skyscrapers we’ve got plenty of other buildings that are sitting vacant in downtown!

I truly believe Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul were two of the worst things to happen to Albuquerque. Sure, like any other city, Albuquerque has its challenges with crime in specific areas. However, the magic of this city is in its people, the Sandia Mountains, and the beautiful blue skies.

The skyline might've been better if it wasn't from its issues that made for many empty plots of land sometimes filled with mobile homes so close to downtown. Of course the usual suburban development isn't much better (there's a reason urbanists bash heavily on SoCal and Phoenix).

The reason the Sandia Mountains are called “Sandia,” is because Sandia means watermelon in Spanish. When the sun hits the mountains the way the do, they resemble watermelons… 🌞⛰🍉☺️

@@ret435 If you're wanting to move to the ABQ Area, definitely try to avoid the SE part of town known as the "War Zone," as well as West Gate, and West Central. It can be very dangerous in these parts of town. The South Valley is not as dangerous, but that is probably the poorest part of town. The North Valley has poverty, with pockets of mansions. And also avoid Downtown at night. I work down there during the day, and it has some hole in the wall places to eat, but just avoid it at night. For safer areas, look into the NW part of town, near Cottonwood Mall. Paradise Hills is also nice, as is Taylor Ranch, and Ventana Ranch. Those areas are suburban, and traffic can be hit or miss getting into town to get to work (most of the jobs are on the East side of the Rio Grande, and there are only so many roads to get over the river). I personally would love to buy a home in the University Heights area. If you have more money, richer areas are the NE Heights, the Foothills, Corrales, and Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. Those areas are where most of Albuquerque's mansions are.

@@ret435 For places to visit, very touristy areas are Old Town, Sandia Tram, The ABQ Biopark, and the cluster of Museums on Mountain. (I also like Tinkertown Museum, which is in the mountains in a town called Sandia Crest). Then there's Nob Hill, which is a quirky collection of restaurants and boutique shops near the University. And the ABQ Uptown area is where more high-end shopping and restaurants are. If you are into the outdoors like I am, you can hike La Luz Trail in the Sandias or go to the Rio Grande Nature Center off Candelaria. You can also access the volcanoes off Atrisco Vista Blvd, just West of the city. If you don't mind the hour drive, the Jemez Mountains are my favorite. You can visit the Gilman Tunnels, climb on top off Soda Dam Falls, or Jemez Falls, or drive around the Valles Caldera, which are all off Highway 4. Meow Wolf is also pretty cool. That is in Santa Fe, only about 45 minutes to an hour north of ABQ on I-25.

The driving factors for building tall buildings that are like 40 and 50 stories up is a lack of real estate and a driving factor try to keep buildings from being built very tall is water heating and cooling and you got these two driving factors encouraging people not to build up but the build out The energy cost for a very tall building no place like the southwest would be a lot more expensive

There have been multiple proposals for high rises that were almost put to fruition, the recent one being a 2017 rfp on the Civic North lot, but it was shutdown by the most recent mayor, I mean of course there are priorities in uplifting the state of the city in crime and homelessness, but the city was so close in many occasions to update its approximately 50 year old skyline.
