This is what separates the likes of Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, and now Alcaraz from the rest. When they smell blood, they can lift their game and go turbo mode and ensure that the opponent is literally decimated. Zverev had the match and all the momentum in his hands moving into the 4th set, putting on a serving clinic in the 3rd set. What happens? His level dips, he serves terribly and misses umpteen break opportunities. Alcaraz put on the after burners only in the 5 set.

Zverev is like a literal workhorse, very steady both mentally and game wise. And he has probably got the best (serve + baseline) game on tour. The problem is that he's unable to elevate his game when it really matters. I'm thrilled Alcaraz won, and I honestly thought he didn’t have his best stuff, but the French Open not having Hawkeye is seriously a joke. Such a shame to see such a good player unable to put all the pieces together for a slam. Zverev's backhand is such a weapon but there were ample opportunities to finish points off with his forehand down the line and he just loops it in far too safely giving Alcaraz time to get back in the point. He really needs to try taking the ball a bit earlier too in general to take time away from his opponents. Great tournament for him regardless and Alcaraz as well of course!

He will never be number 1. He’s 27 and number 4. Historically he’s weak on grass. He’s certainly not guaranteed to win any majors. It was 4 years since he was even in a final of one. 2020 was his chance, there were no big 3 and he led a nervous Thiem 2 sets to none and was up a break, and 2 points away. It was the most nervous collapse I’ve seen by a male player. Stan Wawrinks is the opposite..he won all 3 major finals he played and beat Djokovic in 2 and Nadal (albeit injured) in 1. He also beat Federer in a slam. Zverev has never beaten any of the big 3 in a slam. Even Tsitsipas has beaten Fed and Rafa in a slam. He will be very fortunate to win 1 if his nerve hood’s and he has a favorable draw.

Zverev won the 3th set and started to complain in the first game of the 4th set, after that the match was over for him, like it would for Rublev,Tsitsipas,Rune,Fritz,Hurkacz, this is why Alcaraz and Sinner are way above the rest, when they're not playing well they can find solutions by being mentally strong which is something that except Medvedev on hard courts the others can't.

Bring in the Hawkeye Tennis Line-Calling System for Roland Garros! Unacceptable that they still have human error calls on clay and are stubborn to bring it in just because "you can see the mark". Clearly they can't see it very well when constantly making the wrong call

It was a good match but not a top one. Both players made more errors than winners and the last two sets were very one sided. The 3rd set was very streaky with Carlos getting tight and giving up 5 games in a row. The best classic battles always feature way more winners than errors. It was a lengthy match with some extended rallies and good shotmaking but both players never seemed to play great at the same time. Carlos was the bette player and should have won fairly easily in 4 sets. He blew a 5-2 lead and committed a lot of mistakes to lose 5 games in a row. Then inexplicably Zverev went on to lose 6 of the next 7 games. It was weird.

Carlos won the first set so handily & it looked like it would be a blow-out. Carlos was on fire & Zverev looked absolutely demoralized. But then Carlos let up on his focus, & allowed Zverev back into the match in the 2nd set. You could tell Carlos was so frustrated that he'd let up on the gas instead of keeping himself laser-focused during such an important match. He had to fight hard to get back in the match & take the final two sets. He never really found his A game again, nor did Zverev. But Carlos kept changing things up & threw the whole kitchen sink at Zverev. I really admire that kind of tenacity--nothing but respect for the way Carlos has already learned that truly great players find a way to win even when they're not playing their best tennis. 21 years old, with three Grand Slams already. What an athlete, what a fantastic ambassador for our sport.
