23rd May 2021 update:
It seems this mower may not be available from Aldi again as they push (sorry!) their electric mowers but these are very similar to other chinese made cheap mowers with other brand names.
As this mower enters it's 4th year of good service it is still going strong. But I have just acquired a lovely vintage JP Minimower so the sidewheel may soon be redundant.

Thanks for the video. I paid 15 quid for a nearly-new mower of the same design and it's heavier and harder work than I expected (have a big garden) and the grass collection box is near useless. I would just leave the cuttings on the grass but it doesn't trim them small enough to avoid thatch buildup. It will be getting resold. Still it was fun to play with and I have crossed it off my bucket list which has some value I suppose.

thank you Floyd, I have a very similar one made by Saxon and after a while, unnoticed by me, all those little butterfly screws simply loosened, fell off and disappeared forever in the grass! Maddening enough but now my big problem is the handle came off and I have put the instruction manual somewhere so safe that I can't find it and haven't got a clue which holes the handle fits into...exasperating!

Thank you for the comment. With respect I think you're missing some of the irony. I stand by the comment regarding the height adjustment; if someone doesn't understand such simple mechanical details, they probably don't understand how the thing cuts. For the record, the supplied instructions describe both processes and have several safety warnings. Thanks for the compliment. :-)

I bought one similar to this for £40 from Argos...however, you missed the MAIN bit for me..the only thing I don't know how to assemble...how you put the handle when it is made up onto the mower....do you have to use a wrench to unscrew the nuts at the side...because the hole of the handle I have at the bottom seems too big to stay on.....
@floydraser4603
@floydraser4603 4 года назад
Hi Carmel, I've just looked at the Argos Challenge mower and they look more or less the same. Look at my video again and freeze it at the start and you'll see where the handle connects. They are not nuts but plain lugs on the inside; on the Argos one they seem to look like bits of tube. You fit one of the legs of the handle on one of the lugs then squeeze the other leg to fit the other side. I suggest doing this before fitting the top part of the handle as it may be more flexible. Hope this helps, please let me know. Floyd.

Is this the Kingfisher which I bought 3 years ago, totally blunt and just pulls out the grass. Alsways had a Flymo but I have a very front lawn so thought I would get a push mower like my grandad had. Found to sharpen you need grinding paste and a special drill bit that goes into electric drill to turn the blades against the bar at the bottom, in total not far off £30. You make a good point about even for £30 you could buy one each year but have to say and possibly your point "Maybe not" is very arrogant and not caring about the world in throwing away one of these each year.
@floydraser4603
@floydraser4603 3 года назад
Wake up UK - joined youtube Sept 2012 and in all that time gained 2 subscribers and posted no videos. So what's the point? I don't mind being called arogant but it's the wrong word. You have completely missed the irony (look it up) from way up there on your high horse. I don't know if it's the same as the Kingfisher but anyway, if it was faulty you should have returned it to the supplier. The process you describe is back honing. Search youtube for it and see how to do it. Back honing is only for restoring an old blade, it won't repair a damaged blade or compensate for a badly set up mower. I think you're suggesting I'm damaging the environment by inviting people to throw away a mower each year? So, your special adapter is made of steel. A bloke got in his car one morning to drive to work in a quarry to dig out ore. That was then transported to a foundry where it would be turned into steel (phenominal amounts of heat energy used so far). The steel would then be rolled out into bars, transported to an engineering place to be turned into your adapter. Around 17% of what you paid for it was to transport it to the supplier. Same goes for the steel to make the drill, but add to that the crude oil used to make the plastic bits of the drill. It's getting worse.. Maybe a new mower is not looking so bad after all? That's another joke by the way. Best of all though: if you look at the videos on youtube about back honing eventually you'll find one showing how to do it without a drill, like I had to on my 1950s JP mower. YOU KICK IT BACKWARDS WITH YOUR FOOT! Now kindly go and spread the message about junk mail and how recycling paper is just as wasteful and damaging to the environment as new paper, and how everyone should have a dishcloth and use less kitchen roll. Then you may start to get the UK to wake up.

@@floydraser4603 Regarding needing subscribers, I had a life time of standing up in front of tough kids teaching Maths and Science - did well and was highly respected especially by parents. Trained very critical IT Teckies who I can assure you tore me to pieces on my product knowledge, so most of my evening I was studying Microsoft products to come back at them the next day. Only after two years I was most asked for Trainer in the company. Went private and always in demand by major companies in Europe. I comment on several online newspapers and here and often get a lot of 'Likes'. Having also worked on presentations for IT shows required content creation for powerpoint, animations and interviewing customers - I have absolute no desire, need or wish to spend time creating RU-vid videos. As so typical now with a few who get back to me, no attempt to counter, argue or prove me wrong but a pathethic attempt to 'somehow' decry my comments because I choose not to make RU-vids - how that makes any sence is beyond me. You certainly did not attempt to state why I was wrong to say, throwing something like a push lawn mower away every year as it is blunt and buying a new one - was wrong. But I wili accept, chatting to the B&Q manager where I got it, that if it cost only about £30, I got use out of it for 3 years, then £10 per year is not to bad. From your voice on the video, I reckon you are both from the same generation who have no problem at all, in using up earth resources and buying new items to make a minority of rich people richer. In truth as also happens now, especially with the Woke madness generation, is the growth of not wanting to be criticised and not many appeared because they often 'pruned' and removed as I expect you will do with this one. The real reason people as you have done by putting videos on here is not the wish to help, give guidance, share expertise it is more to do with seeking affirmation or to use it for driving business to their own web site. The most common examples are famous chefs whose videos are really eye-candy and as in your case the items (ie ingredients) would only be found in an obscured village in Italy of opening a very expensive bottle of Cognac. Also some one else I commented on, who showed how to me make a shoe tidy which required about £30,000 of industrial cutting tools (he just happen to have in his garden shed). You also might be interested that I contacted Kingfisher about the blades being blunt and was told they no longer make the mower BECAUSE as I found it soon became blunt and the cost of repairing was not worth it. So how did as with my grandfather cope before we all had electic drills and very expensive atachments to connect to the mower. NOW THAT WOULD BE A USEFUL RU-vid video. May I also finally state the most useful bit of advice I was told by my Korean Tae Kwon Do master in the RAF when I blamed all my problems on my father and teachers finding fault and criticizing me was to see such criticisms as GOLD especially from old people, as old people as I am, we basically don't give a f*** about people getting upset if we tell them they are doing some thing wrong, because in most cases having lived many years, most likely a lot of experience we know what we are talking about and usually right. As my TKD instructor/master had served in the Vietnam war and hunted and killed 276 Vietcong and disposed of them with a single knife, I tended to take what he told me at the age of 17 with great interest and found he was right. It clicked and started to listen to any criticism and I went on to do very well in life, at 68 I still do !! Do come back, I do enjoy such exchanges but please write a bit more than two sentences. Note! I can touch type.

@@wakeupuk3860 Well at least you put a bit more thought into it this time; if it weren't for the subject matter I would have thought your first comment was written by a 15 year old due to the spelling and grammar. Not good from a teacher? What a bore! Who wants or needs to know all that? So you have deliberately misinterpreted the content to try in some way to justify your response. You are a Labour politician aren't you? So with all your impressive qualifications maybe you would educate me on a very simple matter: Just how Gentlemanly is it to accuse a complete stranger of being arogant on social media while hiding under the anonymity of a pseudonym?
@wakeupuk3860
@wakeupuk3860 3 года назад
@@floydraser4603GOOD MORNING Raser, thought I just get this off before breakfast. Is that it? Please, please, please come back with a better one than spelling, which is the first usual riposte thrown at ex teachers on here. Were you one of those kids, who as soon as a teacher made a little mistake put his hand up all excited shouting “Sir, sir, sir, sir…. you did it wrong”. English grammar is often argued about more than any other language in the world and mine is certainly not perfect, but I could not see anything serious in my first sentences. What I would say, possibly you should consider your own evaluation of what good grammar and spelling is, as arrogant is spelt with two 'r's not one. But, please do point out where I went wrong, as it is normal with intelligent people, if they point out a mistake to say where the grammar is poor and give an example why - which you did not. If you think my grammar is on par with today’s 15 year olds considering I was a Technical Author then you certainly are not aware of the real world and I suggest you look to your own writing. As you chose to bring up grammar, may I point out there is no need for a capital 'G' after the interrogative adverb 'how' and gentlemanly is not a proper noun. In fact, there are quite a few debateable aspects of your own English which we could discuss but let’s move on. I do thank you though for your compliment about my 'impressive' qualifications, how sweet of you. You said "Who said and wants to know that"... well, you did read it all, didn't you? Again, you are making statements without clarification i.e. 'deliberately misinterpreted the content to try in some way to justify your response' but you did not state what content exactly you were referring to, did you notice I made a fair number of points thus please elaborate which ones. I have to say, that if it was not from hearing your voice, I would believe I am addressing a 15 year old lad on reading all your replies. As your reading understanding and cognitive skills are not too good are they? If you recall I spoke about Woke madness, I am ex-military and went private to consult large companies - not really strong indicators of being a left wing politician, are they? Also you could have not insulted me more than call me that, I am very anti-left wing, pro-Brexit and wish we had Nigel Farage as our PM. I winced when I read 'hiding under the anonymity of a pseudonym', you bet I use one, and any intelligent person who uses social media does so as well, but even here you showed a contradiction, is your name really Floyd Raser, surely that is a pseudonym? Are you really using your own name on here, as a long-term IT Trainer who has advised many companies I would recommend for your own safety (ie having it used by nefarious hackers) and your family you don’t! I was initially quite pleased to see your reply, was hoping for some decent 'banter', answers to my questions i.e. throwing away push lawn mowers, but you did not and that is very much LIKE a Labour Politician. Over to you but please up your game. P.S. where on earth did I insinuate you were arrogant, please point out.

It's an excellent little mower for the smaller lawn, the only shame is that Aldi seem to have dropped it in favour of a really poor looking rechargeable thing.
