Although I had seen some of her videos, it was only with the announcement of this tour that I really began taking notice of Aldous Harding. For the past few months I’ve been listening to all of her albums on a regular basis and I’ve become a great admirer. I also read numerous comments about her wonderful live performances and how special it is seeing her on stage. It was indeed an extraordinary night. She and the band reproduced her songs beautifully. And sitting in the front row there was an intimacy which would have been lost further back. I got the impression that Aldous demands almost as much from her audiences as she does from herself. I’m hoping we, the audience, lived up to her expectations that night. I know she lived up to all of ours. Songs recorded:
Designer (00:16)
Treasure (05:25)
The Barrel (10:43)
Blend (16:50)
Imagining My Man (21:36)
I deliberately haven’t edited out Aldous’ long, silent pauses between songs. These were as much a part of her performance as the songs themselves. People unable to cope with them should perhaps consider not going to one of her concerts.

Thanks for posting that , Peter . BTW , was this show only 27 mins or so long ? Was there another show before or after ? Just curious . Well , I was thinking about them touring , that this was all the way down in Sydney and she was living in Scotland at the time ? And maybe played 3-5 shows while there ? All these questions …. I’m up in the Pacific Northwest , a few hours from Seattle where they’ll be in February(?) I think and it’ll fascinating to see how she will have transformed . Or maybe not . Will be a smashing show whatever they’ve been up to . Thanks again !

@@lisacolbert5987 Hi Lisa. No, this was not the entire show. You can find the full setlist here: www.setlist.fm/setlist/aldous-harding/2020/enmore-theatre-sydney-australia-3b998c38.html But for me, the concert was far too short. I could have listened to her and the band all night. It was a national tour of both Australia and New Zealand. The support act was Hand Habits who was also very good. There are a couple of songs from them on my RU-vid channel. I'm jealous of your chance to see her in February. It'll be a great show for sure. Thanks for commenting.

The mystery of Aldous Harding was unlocked for me when I realized she's not singing a song, she's IN the music. I think she sees the lyrics and feels the emotion of the movie in her mind. It's extraordinarily honest, with a kind of courage that comes from true vulnerability.

Aldous Harding could be one of the rare creative human creatures of our time; blessed threefold. 1 - A marvelous voice. 2 - A connection with the creative spirit that lives in us all, but that most have allowed to be silenced. 3 - The Will and Tenacity to speak and to sing from that spirit, no matter what the consequences. Having had the pleasure of attending three of her live performances in Manchester UK, I wish her God speed and all the Protection of the Angels, on her Path.

Music is theatre. A lot of people jus stopped trying after Bowie. I say bring back the theatrics. Some people say nowadays it’s distracting to the music. I’ve heard people say that with bands like drab majesty. But I think it adds to the performance. Aldous makes it look natural

An interviewer asked her if it was a problem "keeping it real" Aldous: "there's nothing real about it" Yeah its performance art. There are bands that make pure music with no performance and there are charismatic performers who perform. The two art forms are diverging and separating. Part of her thing is artifice which you can see she's slowly developed playing live, part of it is she's an attractive woman because she's just herself. We're all beautiful... its our cultures that sometimes tell us we're not.

I’ve watched her perform so many times, thinking I’ll figure her out..,but I still haven’t!! 😂 She has to be one of the most unique music artists, and performance artists I can remember since Kate Bush!! To make a long story short… This is a most special person!! Way beyond most peoples comprehension or understanding!! Im embarrassed I almost did not give her a chance at first!! Still not sure how to explain her, tried to turn a few of my “normie” friends on to her and they totally didn’t get it. Or hear the beautiful music!! I’m ok with this being my secret pleasure!! 🥰🥰

I take from her music and performances what I can, and if that's different to her intensions or to what other people take, I'm fine with that. There's lots to enjoy about this very unique artist, and understanding isn't always all that it's cracked up to be. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 20:25 Nick Drake was known for long, silent tuning breaks between songs, with no audience interaction, so she's in good company there. By-the-way, a solution is to hire a trusted roadie to hand you tuned guitars. However I think she likes leaning into the energy that this slower pacing provides.

Back in my performing days, I had to enter a sort of trance state, the result is similar to what you see with Aldous and a lot of artists of that ilk. It's not always entirely positive. It's similar to drug use in that it can take you somewhere interesting or dangerously out of control. If you're talking about music, the music will set the stage for the "ritual", so make sure that what you're doing will take you on a journey to a place you actually want to reach.

@Peter_LiveMusic
@Peter_LiveMusic 3 года назад
Thanks for commenting. There have been one or two very negative comments by people trolling. I've removed them. I don't mind people expressing their opinions but personal attacks are not welcome here. However, as you can see Aldous has a lot of admirers and that number is only increasing. I think you are right in seeing the stage persona as a 'bit forced' or contrived but I'm one of those who it doesn't annoy. I don't think it's possible to get up on stage in front of thousands of people without putting on some kind of mask. I'm still strongly of the opinion that Aldous uses her persona as a coping mechanism, something to hide behind. Of course, I could be wrong. But if that's what she needs to do in order to perform live, then I say go for it. And in any case, it has now become very much part of her performances. I think many people would miss it if she suddenly stopped.

LOL Yes, audiences can be a major frustration. I can cope with poorly timed clapping. It's out of tune singing that irritates me. But hey, my videoing probably annoys people (even though I do try to be as discrete as possible). All part of the experience.

While her new songs are amazing and she's such a talent, how she acts on stage and interviews are a world apart to what she was like back in the day. Watch interviews/performances from 2015 and she was bubbly, talkative and interested in being at the interview/performance, now, however, she's just disinterested. Thanks heaps for posting this. I wanted to go but couldn't :)
@Peter_LiveMusic
@Peter_LiveMusic 4 года назад
Interesting to hear about the change. I'll have a look back. I didn't get the impression that she was 'disinterested' at the concert. She was more like an Olympic high diver forcing total concentration before she plunged into the next song. She seemed to be psyching herself up. I'm sure lots of people read lots of different things into it. Anyway, the songs were beautifully performed. Try to catch her next time. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Thanks for commenting Nathan.

I feel like she's plunged more and more into the character that she has mentioned she inhabits. It's really art, methinks, all of it. And in interviews I think she really tries to choose words carefully. In concert I was about 4 feet away and felt her love and intensity of presence so strong it was as the caption on this video says, almost unbearably intimate. My boyfriend and I felt the reverberations for days. I think she's very giving. ❤

When I saw her live I was up close, too, and was struck by how much she'd resemble an animatronic when she'd get into song mode, especially under the stage lighting. Her exaggerated, offbeat facial expressions and posture elicit that 'uncanny valley' feeling. Mesmerizing and super eerie. One of the most memorable encounters of my life.

You've described her performance very well, although for people who haven't actually experienced her live, it might sound a little off-putting. Thanks TTL. She's a Kiwi so it's only natural that she plays Australia regularly. But she's got a world wide following now. As for us getting all the 'best gigs', I only wish. You're light years ahead over there. I only wish with this video I was able to get more of the band in. I could see them fine but I always shoot from my chest when seated so as not to disturb those around me. That couple of feet difference significantly lessened what my camera saw. Thankfully, Aldous is so expressive that it's enough just to watch her.

Peter, I was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 and sitting in my bedroom watching this right before bed, really brightened my night! Incredible footage! I’ve seen Aldous twice, but never got to see any of the songs from Designer live so this is a treat! What kind of camera do you use to capture such intimate footage?
@Peter_LiveMusic
@Peter_LiveMusic 3 года назад
Oh dear, I hope it's not a bad case and that you are feeling much better soon. I'm glad this footage has helped take your mind off things this evening. It really was a terrific concert. I was lucky enough to be in the front row towards the middle so I had a great view. I use a Sony RX100 because it fits so neatly into my pocket. Anything larger would be barred. It's got a decent zoom hence the close ups. Unfortunately, I had to hold it low (as not to disturb those around me) so I couldn't capture the back of the stage. I could see the rest of the band but my camera couldn't. Take care. Get well soon.
