“We’re constantly being told that there are all of these threats around us, but the threats that the media and the police and certain large corporations want us to be focused on are not the things that actually most determine our safety.” Civil Rights Corps founder and executive director Alec Karakatsanis discusses how liberal publications and politicians are shaping the narrative that supports police funding and “copaganda.” #DailyShow #Comedy

That’s a great point! I’ve never even thought of wage theft that way, nor was I aware it was so pervasive. Now so many corporations are making signing away your rights to class action lawsuits mandatory for employment (forced arbitration).

On top of that, when they leave the job where they experienced wage theft, they are often coerced or forced to sign an NDA, usually for a small 'leaving bonus' that the worker can't afford to turn down... So they have no choice but to sign. The practice should simply be illegal. There's an entirely different set of protocol regarding trade secrets, so NDAs aren't necessary to protect them. NDA's are being used as a weapon. Also, when it comes to employees of well-known people, NDA's are often used to cover up their abuses of their employees. I understand the desire to not have someone speak out of turn... That's why libel laws were created. But NDA's are unnecessary.

I hope you have Alec on again for further discussion! It's so critical that we delve into what kinds of news even liberal outlets think is "fit to print," the kinds of crimes they seem to care about, the kind of data they use and how they use it, etc. Recent talk of a "crime wave" in the Atlantic, for example, really only pulls data from a few cities and focuses on a few (violent) crimes. That kind of statistical cherry picking is bad journalism. This gets to one of Alec's main points: there are other crimes and civic harms (eg pollution violations) that harm far more people, are not taken seriously by "law enforcement," and are not reported on by even the most liberal of news outlets. "Why aren't you taking these more affecting harms more seriously?" is a legitimate question to ask the New York Times of the world.

Until we understand how little media is interested in informing us but is 100% focused on profit and that the truth is secondary we will continue to find ourselves easily manipulated and duped into keeping the status quo. What Alec says is very true and most Americans would want them fixed but aren’t likely to care because it has no sensational value and that’s what we’ve been trained to “need”. Sensationalism breeds conflict and conflict creates interest and interest creates income. We need a media source that isn’t motivated by a need for profit and can produce the news in a format that results in people being INFORMED and EDUCATED! Without it we continue to be the sheep we’ve created as a role for ourselves.

What he does should be illegal. Freedom of speech, yeah I get it. @@danielhostetler9493 Other countries like Romania and much of Latin America have strong reputations for corruption and bribes permeating many parts of society. So saying the US is worse than most of the third world is a strong statement because it has a lot of competition in that regard. That's all And that reputation is not given to me by the media since the US media does not really discuss these issues in other countries. The people I have interacted with from various countries feel their nations have corruption problems. Another thing that needs to be rethought : this habit that audiences have to clap everytime someone says anything resembling a catchphrase. It's like they're trained dogs. Or is someone in the room telling them when to clap ? It's tiresome. Just listen to the guy and remember what he says so you can ponder it later, instead of interrupting him constantly, even with manifestations of praise. It's too much. A live studio audience is great for the parts of the show that are actually comedy. But not these serious interviews. No wonder the whole mediatic system feels like a circus, if we're reacting to anything as we would to a trapezist or an illusionist or a clown.

That was way too short...a deep dive on the media copaganda and slanted media coverage generally should be done...smaller segments delivered over the course of a month giving the full story in bite-sized informative blocks. Most importantly how the public can: 1. Identify bad coverage, 2. Call it out, and 3. Effect meaningful and lasting change. All media outlets do this...all are bad for doing this. I watch detective shows from a dozen different countries, and while "policing" may differ in various countries, the detective tropes are pretty consistent. We are always shown that detectives "must" cheat and break laws in order to catch the bad guys. Viewers are on the side of the detectives, so we're trained, over and over, to believe that laws don't pertain to "us," only to the people we don't like.
