I had to find this because I was hunting for a Welsh version of this song after finding a story about my GG-grandmother; I knew the song but to a different tune. She was a singer, her husband was a choir conductor in Wales and in Pennsylvania. When he was killed in a mine she continued teaching their remaining children to sing and they sang as a family quartet to help make a living. They did well enough that my G-grandfather well to a music conservatory in Boston to train, then to London in the very early 1900s at the Royal Academy of Music (the article says he was the first Welshman to be admitted) He went on to teach at colleges and high schools all over to sing, starting at Wesleyan College back east The article said she’d stopped even talking curing the last weeks of her life - too much work, too little air ~ then a couple days before she died she sat up and sang the whole song beautifully to the family. One of my favourite hymns of all time and sung so beautifully by Aled. What a wonderful and rich voice!! I was fortunate enough to see him in concert just last week in Newcastle (NSW) and I was thrilled to meet him afterwards. A truly lovely man who is courteous and welcoming to all he meets. The world really needs more people like this man who has the voice of an angel and a divine gift for music. God bless you for sharing this miracle with all of us.
One of my very favourite hymns, and beautifully song. I like the orchestration and backing choir, too. I've been searching for a really good version of this, and so far (for my taste) this is the best I've found.
In his book "In Parenthesis" - an account of his time in the Somme from December 1915 to July 1916 - David Jones tells of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers singing this hymn as they counted down the final few moments waiting to go over the top at Mametz Wood.. The RWF lost over a thousand men there.
No matter what some say about Welsh (the ‘ch’ I guess), I think Welsh is beautiful. I always think it’s all the vowels, but no one Welsh has weighed in on that thought!

Not that I’ve found, however my phone’s voice recorder is so good I’m going to try recording it off the TV, which does have pretty good sound! It will be nice to at least have it!
Great hymn and beautifully sung. However, it's beyond me why they would show pictures of the singer on a mountain top and even suggest this is recorded there. That is false romanticism that only diminishes the song.
