Hi Alex! Thank you for sharing the quilt. I just wanted to clarify that Nov 1 is All Saints day and Nov 2 is All Souls (all the departed), there’s no third holiday. Day of the Dead is the same as All Souls, it’s not a two day holiday. Thank you so much for showing the photos. I’m not Mexican, but we also celebrate our dead by visiting and decorating at the cemetery.
Many Americans have issues with death & often associate Day of the dead celebrations as something morbid or occult, but it’s neither. Other cultures don’t fear death like we often do as Americans, can’t even talk about death it’s so uncomfortable. Learned this living abroad. Thanks for explaining that it’s a remembrance & honoring of the departed❤not related to Halloween. Kudos!
Sorry I missed the live. Thank you for sharing the info on Dia de los Muertos. It is a very important time and so special to remember those that have passed and to know that one day each of us that are part of the tradition will be remembered by our loved ones too. Also, I have the tree pattern. I actually bought it directly from you at Quilting in the Garden a few years ago. 😊I would love to learn to make it!!!
happened to be in San Francisco a few years ago and a niece took us to a Day of the Dead celebration, wow!! Had no idea they did these celebrations, living in the midwest. Many people were happy to chat with you as well as discuss their family’s exhibit in the park. Many area homes also decorated and painted their homes in celebration too - what a wonderful opportunity!!

All Saints Day is 1 November, All Souls is 2 November. The first is still a public holiday here in France, in the countryside families will clean up the family tombs and add many pots of flowers, most often chrysanthèmums, which are on sale everywhere at this season. These Christian holidays are superimposed on the old pagan Samhain festival, when the veil between this world and the next was thought to be at its thinnest.
Art is Art and not everyone will like an art piece but these shows should select quilts based on the rules, quality and workmanship. It should not be rejected due to bias or other agendas. I see many quilting friends making a quilt for a show that they know will be accepted rather than a quilt they made with a purpose or the love of it.
I absolutely agree, but I submit that the opposite is also true. A pretty large number of quilts at QuiltCon had political/moral statements that I suspect were selected more for that kind of impact than for the quality of the work or overall artistic value. No matter how they select quilts someone won’t be happy tho. :) Personally I like them all, regardless of point of view or even quality of workmanship because they are evidence that we have created a community of diverse people around the world who have taken needle thread and fabric in hand and created something that is greater than the sum of its parts. It ties us to our history and projects our voices into the future.
