That was some seriously athletic BASS playing...wow! The ironman award goes to...YOUNG HEO Great HIT!!!

Great playing from the entire quartet, but as a bassist I have to doff my cap to Young Heo for his incredible stamina in playing at that pace for nearly 12minutes! Double bass is a very physically demanding instrument!

Electric bass is usually more practical for gigging around, but nothing can perfectly replace the tone of a double bass

Take it from an old guy who has played this song a thousand times with a thousand musicians, this version really swings, and gives me back some faith in Jazz which I have sadly feared for a while was going to disappear up it's own backside if the standards got any lower. Thanks to the band, for restoring my belief in hard swingin take no prisoners bop music, the ultimate way to clear a room when a party is over , leaving behind only the serious listeners. I shall look out for more of your stuff.

I love the people in the audience that don’t clap and have their arms crossed like they are God’s gift to the world and we are the humble servants! What is it with the music community! Relax you are at a concert! Great playing Alex!!!

Well, you could argue that the audience think that their playing is “God’s gift”. They are extremely talented at their craft, so maybe instead of letting loose to the beat they listen closely at a live ensemble as great as them.

What an incredible set up of this ancient tune, even the melody was very cleverly redone in the outchorus...who is saying that this music is dead or history or museum....?it is very much alive, as Alex Hahn and his rhythm section made had proven on this occasion. Congratulation for a great performance individually as well in the ensemble.. Klaus-Werner Pusch

Thanks for the laugh Jeffery, In fact I ran a jazz club, and played bass in a piano trio, and would often call Ronnie Scott to book any stray cats that might want to fill in an extra gig at our place, that he would book for maybe a week at his club in Soho,London. Whenever I called and he didn't answer personally , he would rush to the phone after being told that Tony Williams wanted to speak to him. I became a standing joke at the place. Dear Tony Williams the drummer has been gone quite a while now, sadly missed for the genius that he was, and only two days ago, I heard that Alan Holdsworth died , who played with his band too. Tempus Fugit, and memories are all that are left of the great music that they made. Thanks for the comment , it made me laugh, and prompted me to play Alex's version once again with my breakfast here in Holland this morning. Bon Appetite !

Was your club Bim Huis, by any chance Anthony?
@anthonywilliams6764
@anthonywilliams6764 7 лет назад
No ,it was in the Isle of Man, but that was a long time ago, and the jazz scene has faded away over there now, young people used to come to all the concerts, but these days the music is cover versions of cover versions of chart music, and they struggle to fill a small room, except at TT time, when thirty thousand hairy arsed bikers gather there for the race week, and garage bands come out of garages to play rock and roll. Everyone shouts, and no-one listens anymore. I have played the Bimhuis though, and Dutch audiences are really ahead of the rest of masses in English speaking countries, they LIKE jazz !

Does the pianist ever 'mention' Cherokee? He seems technically gifted, but he doesn't seem to use the chord structure of Cherokee at all. When Alex Hahn comes on, you hear the tune and the changes immediately.

Sorry I just couldn't get into the piano soling. Hardly any reference to the original harmonic and melodic motifs and just a bit too self indulgent imo. Sax solo on the other hand was both original AND true to the original tune.. Good job!
@Jordarr8994
@Jordarr8994 6 лет назад
What solo isn't self indulgent? Solos are meant to showcase the skills and show what the musician brings to the table, such an invalid criticism that says nothing "wahhhh you're not playing to my conventional standards of what jazz is you're too self indulgent" just a bunch of horse shit from people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
