I never realised how Great a player Alex Higgins was until I looked through all the footage of him against all his formidable opponents the likes of Reardon , Davis and the mesmerising young Whirlwind White

Higgins was the greatest player to ever play snooker.His natural ability was astounding to be able to produce the snooker he did without practice, sleep, food, and the fact back then nobody diagnosed mental health. I believe Alex was maybe bipolar, I don't believe aspergers but possible, but there was something. I spent so much time with him from 1988 onwards and his lovely manager Doug Perry. I sat in players lounges where the only people he wanted to speak to were Stevie James (and Stevie's Dad) and a quick conversation of mutual respect with Davis, who in ten years I never heard a really bad word spoken, they had zero in common, didn't particularly like one another, but there was respect between the two. He had no time for the others apart from Jimmy but he was let down by Jimmy not standing by him over the non existent ban for the 1 million Pound Mitre Sky Tournament of which Hendry was the instigator of not letting Alex play and of which Jimmy went on to win in the final against Drago and cost Alex maybe 500,000. Money was obviously more important to Jimmy than sticking up for the fact Alex was not banned from the tournament. Alex felt it was a kick in the teeth. Similar but worse to when Jimmy joined Matchroom. Alex could be a total disaster to be with and then totally lovely to sit with with his his ex-wife Lynn and the two kids or have a drunken pillow fight in a hotel room with. If he had not been fighting with demons in his head all his career he'd have won ten times. His very best was rarely rarely seen. He was in a different league. Davis and O'Sullivan have alluded to this, It is the truth. If he has been normal he would have shocked the world. Unfortunately a genius is never a normal person. Just as an after note to anyone who thought he was an alcoholic, he'd be drunk walking past a pub from the whiff of drink. He'd be drunk on a few pints. Maybe the fact he couldn't hold drink being so slight of build worked against his reputation. However the best player ever. Without a doubt. That's a glimmer. I could write book of facts of the injustices he had to suffer.

Alex was the greatest ever player. And what clearly sticks out is that he was by far the best middle pocket potter in the game. And thats the hardest pocket out them all, it takes so much talent to pot them like that into a middle pocket the way alex did. And it didnt matter how far the balls were apart and at any angle.

I'm an Yank, and fairly new to snooker, but I've watched a LOT of it this past year and I'm hooked. These players are all remarkably talented. I've gotten familiar with many of the great players, and I am forced to say there was something very very special and unique - almost cosmic -- about Alex Higgins game -his stroke, his movement around the table, everything -- and I think, if I had one game to bet all my fortune on and could choose any player for that game, it would be Higgins. Just the thoughts of a admiring Yank!

Alex' positional play could be poor but he could pull out fantastic shots every time to make up for it. Fearless with the shots he'd take on. These days they'd play safety first if they messed up position on an important ball rather than continue a break. Alex would go for the most difficult ones and most of the time pull them off.

@craigsmith2030
@craigsmith2030 5 лет назад
Jimmy's red miss with the rest at 15-14 up to allow alex in for that memorable clearance, and at 17-17 with stephen hendry, jimmy missed that black off the spot when on a break to win the worlds. I feel they were jimmys moments he should have had 2 world titles. Alex was a beautiful touch player. And was very good with the angles. Great match this though, going back in history. Cloth was heavier and had more pull to the nap and the balls were heavier than the players use today in 2019, also i think the pockets were slightly more forgiving in this era of snooker, alot tighter now. Miss top characters like an alex or jimmy in the sport, i know ronnie is unbelievable and unpredictable, great to watch but there is not a feeling in the sport today like there was back in the higgins, white days. Its maybe just me but there is something about this period in time. Its why little nuggets of video's like this are priceless to watch.

Incredible skill and bottle.
@gauvainbazin5445
@gauvainbazin5445 4 года назад
Just look at Ronnie's 92 clearence. This 69 becomes difficult just because of terrible cue ball control. The table was quite easy with reds opened and many pros would clear that table but he made it difficult by leaving himself in trouble Now Ronnie's clearence is different class the table is extremly difficult and this is a break building masterclass where Alex Higgins would have made a 30 break at best

Really the robot production line started with Stephen Hendry in the very late 80s into the 90s. A few exceptions, obviously Ronnie being the main one. It's about charisma, personality, even charm. Probably more a sign of the times and how the world has changed. 80s was indeed the golden age of snooker, never to come again.
