Alex Honnold finds himself high up in the Swiss Alps, though the climber is not new to extreme heights. What are your thoughts on his adventure with Bear Grylls?
@johnboling
@johnboling 4 года назад
So many things wrong with this. No third hand on rappels, not a simul-rappel as seen by the Figure 8 knots and wide angles on the anchor point. I mean, I guess it looks cool, but a bit over hyped and slightly unsafe. Not that Alex Honnold cares about safety...

@@AMM1998 simul-rap is honestly a pretty common technique for elite climbers. Unfortunately, it's also pretty dangerous, as the recent death of Brad Gobright demonstrates. It's easy to rap off the end of the rope, and sadly, a lot of elite, every-day type climbers sort of lose the habit of tying safety knots.

Why is almost everything they say fake? It's cool enough to just do a reppel. Why not just show how they actually did it. @khachieu1993
@khachieu1993 4 года назад
They did it with the socks because they want to demonstrate real life situation when people don't actually have a proper rope protector mate. And of course they switch it out with a proper protector for filming because they don't wanna film 2 legends tragically fall from a wimpy string bridge to their deaths

@@khachieu1993 the problem with that is that a cloth sock wouldn't actually do anything to protect the rope. I have experience working at height and that sock would be toast in a matter of seconds. I know next to nothing about climbing, but even I can see that one rope that doesn’t reach the bottom cannot possibly turn into two ropes, each anchored at the top at their midpoint, that all of a sudden reach the bottom. That’s some daylight savings time math right there.

Was searching the comments for someone who noticed the lack of prussic or safety ropes. To be fair, as you well know, Honnold is a very experienced climber, and has done hundreds, or thousands of rappels in his life, I doubt he really needs a prussic or any sort of back up, that the rest of the guests would need.

To quote Andy Kirkpatrick ( mountaineer, author, motivational speaker and monologist. Best known as a big wall climber, having scaled Yosemite's El Capitan 30+ times, including five solo ascents, and two one day ascents, as well as climbing in Patagonia, Alaska, Antarctica and the Alps, so he knows what he's talking about): QUOTE Typical, you give Bear Grylls a break in your podcast and what does he do, only goes and promotes one of the most stupid and dangerous rappel techniques out there, one with a track record of killing people (which I also covered in another podcast). True to form, Bear being Bear, he not only bigs up this technique, complete with graphics and warning about death, but actually doesn't carry out the technique at all (the ropes were tied off), which just adds another layer of confusion and nonsense that could kill some fool daft enough to try it. The fact I doubt a counterbalance rappel has ever been used by any 'special forces' on the planet is one thing, and it got one of Alex's best friends killed late last year is another, but the demonstration/promotion of it like this is probably even worse. It's all great fun until someone kills themselves emulating a hero (Alex if you're a climber or Bear if you're an idiot). Yes 'it's just TV', but I really feel this is overstepping the mark, and the safety team should hang their heads in shame, especially as many of them are mountain guides (I guess $$$$$ always trumps good judgement). UNQUOTE Grylls I can understand, but why Alex Honnold would lend his name to something like this, I have no idea!

Rob Naylor if someone goes out and tries it based on this segment alone, without actually researching the technique, then THAT IS ON THEM. It’s a tv show for crying out loud.

After I heard Gobright passed in a simuli rappel I looked them up and basically told myself I am never ever going to think of attempting one, unless our lives depend on it, and I can't ever imagine myself in that sort of situation But yeah this is promoting a dangerous technique and not even demonstrating it properly , I thought Alex would at least take a stand against it.

@50StichesSteel 4 года назад
@@lararoche1977 They'll send some young production assistant back up the rope to get it lol...You dont have to counter balance rappel to get rope back either. Make a bite, overhand it with a loop hanging out, get it around the wire and pass the other end of the rope through the loop...Done and very secure...Just make sure you only rappel off of the one side and not the other. One side for rappeling and a quick tug on the non rappel side and you have your rope back
