What you don't hear in this video, is the quality of the sound! I am an audiophile, and this is now the record I use to demonstrate the quality of my Hi-Fi system. You can't hear it in the video, but the sound is FANTASTIC!
Love This. I saw them last night...blown away how authentic they were like I'd gone back in time. Spot on. Fantastic British Band. Seeing them again...
Well I stumbled on this quite accidentally, as I was so bored tonight I just searched the term "78rpm" to file through and see what came up. So this came up, and at first of course I thought it was a circa 100 year old 78. Reading the comments, I find out this is a modern orchestra. I have stated many times that nobody can recreate the 1920's sound. These people have done it. I am happy to be wrong.
I just got a copy of this and the quality is phenomenal. This clip does not do it justice. I have never heard my parents 1964 RCA Console, which has been rebuilt, play a 78 that sounded this well. It sounds better than the LPs. It is superb.
Alex Mendham and his orchestra, with the Dunlop sisters, are the house band at the Sovoy hotel, I believe in London? I sure wish they would do a US tour!
I've heard of this label they are a recreation of sorts reviving the 78 rpm record. The sound is incredible, would not recommend playing this on a mechanical acoustic machine
We used turntables like that on Taunton Hospital Radio - didn’t know that you could play gramophone records on them by pressing the 33 and 45 RPM buttons simultaneously - although 33 + 45 = 78! Thought that it might bugger the belt drive and knacker your needle!
Just ordered this record - on black vinyl (the clear was $30 extra). Looking forward to adding it to my Alex Mendham Orchestra collection. Question: Are you playing this with a standard LP record diamond stylus or with something special for the 78 speed? I have a Dual CS-5000 which has the speed, but haven't set it up yet.
That looks a bit gray in the grooves. What is it made of? The old "shellac" blend that was used originally? And what size stylus is it meant to be played with? Whatever the case may be, it sure sounds great. It would be neat to age one with an old Victrola and maybe give it a few scratches so it would hiss a little bit haha.
