Her story is interesting but she is attempting figure life out. As a high level athlete her lack of control is controlling her life. One of the questions she asked was why did her mother stay for so long in the relationship with a man like her father. What is her relationship like with her father? She’s afraid that the book will damage his reputation. There’s so much that she is not saying.

The best thing Steve does for his guests is that he listens. Is present and listens. Doesn’t rush, finish their sentence or jump in the middle of their statement. Just listens. His follow ups tells them he’s listening. And that does so much for them (and us) 👏🏾👏🏾
@rcaldwell7255
@rcaldwell7255 Год назад
100%. He waits after their answers before he thinks of what to say next, and you can tell he really thinks about what they just said, and then thinks about a follow up question and that's what makes some of these so powerful.

So true the key is that he listens he takes his time to go back to certain areas, gives them the space and time. Love hus style it's si refreshing and it's how interviews should be. I mean if you look at the ambience , soft lighting.,the back drop. Paying attention to detail, setting the scene for his guests to feel at home.

Needless to say, I was getting teary from minute unos. Bloody hell.

From your interviews it's made me realise the affect parents have on their children..forever. To all new parents out there, think before raising your voice or a finger to your children. The affects are so damaging to the heart and mind. Some people never get the right therapy they need to get over that and it devastates their lives forever.

I resonated profoundly with Alex’s interview. I as as child I was mentally, physically & psychologically abused savagely by my father and step mother. The constant fear and terror of my daily existence coupled with being child and feeling hopeless in the prison that was home. Being forced to lie about my bruises, scars & chaos that was my home life. Threatened into silence and suffering. I appreciate her candor, vulnerability & courage to reclaim her power & narrative and the realization that to free herself she must no longer protect the abuser. I’m glad that in spite of her troubled childhood she was able to triumph and achieve success in her endeavors. May her mother & brother join her on the journey of healing and transformation. I read that her father vehemently denies the violence and terror he wielded against his family but that is typical of sociopaths. My dad is Jamaican as well and not all Jamaican’s are as violent & disconnected as our fathers but physical abuse at the hands of parents to their children as well as women being abused by their male partners is a cultural norm that must be addressed and dismantled. That begins with putting abusers on blast and holding them to account. Thank you Alex for sharing so intimately and authentically. May you continue to heal and thrive. Jah bless! 🇯🇲♥️✌🏾

The minute she started describing the father I know that brute was Jamaican and possibly born in the 1950s. He doesn't know any better. He probably was raised by a mother who allowed men to beat her. He never had any good role models and never learn to regulate his emotions. Her mom was trapped.

I know exactly how Alex feels. It brings back memories of my childhood. I can't help feeling the hurt that she feels because my mother went through the same thing. While watching Alex talk about it I wanted to hug her. It's a horrible situation for all involved. Scary for children. Helpless.

Respect to Steven Bartlett for the restraint and respect he shows Alex. Congratulations on your use of silence man, allowing time for her to formulate what are going to be difficult answers instead of doing as many would, blundering in with clumsy suggestions or embarrassed asides to avoid the painfully awkward silences. You should be running training courses on interviewing techniques. Nice professional set up, simple set, discrete videoing. Worth the subscription. This was hard to hear. Alex has inspired me to play football, I remember her at arsenal all those years ago, but she really stood out to me when I noticed her as a pundit. I always noticed her smile, and how she just radiates this positivity, and I loved it! When she smiles, it’s infectious, and her laugh is beautiful. I would never have known that this was her backstory, honestly I didn’t know much about it. But this is shocking. I would not be able to stay that strong, yet she’s fought through so much, as well as the constant online hate and so much more. What a strong woman I guess it is true, that the biggest smiles hide the most pain. She hid her troubles so well, it’s so hard to see her upset- as I’m so used to seeing a beaming, smiling Alex! I just hope she is able to live life as she pleases now, and can really be happy! What an amazing woman! (And icon) We love you Alex x

Hi Steve, I really feel the need to comment on this edition and to say well done to everyone involved. Alex does a remarkable job as a BBC pundit especially this summer when we won the Euro's and hosting the celebrations the next day in Trafalgar Square. Whenever I feel a bit down I play the recording to lift my spirit and it works, it actually brings me happy tears. I'm also from east London and raised in a violent house. I'm a middle aged white guy but had an older black brother, whom I loved and was so extremely proud of and I when the kids at school found out I was racially abused, that upset me very much. Steven, I'd appreciate it if you would pass on the following to Alex please: From someone who's pain people couldn't see because of the colour of my skin, 'Keep Going!'

Alex is so inspirational. She is so candid and honest, it’s a breath of fresh air. Her face lighting up when she speaks of football is heartwarming. We need to help children find their escape and their passion. I remember daily mail readers would hate on Alex for being a woman and being from a council estate in a male dominated industry. They feel threatened because this is a person with no persona, they are real and truthful, and people find it hard to deal with. I was captivated by her story and I’ve taken a lot of confidence from seeing a woman achieve so much from humble beginnings. Now I see why Alex was tearing up when the women won the European cup; this was so much more than football for Alex, it was an opportunity for a better life and a hope in a childhood of some dark days. Alex, hold your head up high and keep owning everything you do. I will look forward to reading your book, you deserve all your success ⭐

For anyone who says that finding love in a same-sex couple is how you are born this for me is a very sad story that helps me understand how it happens. If you fear your father and the love you show to him is betrayed and the abuse your mother endured, would you trust a man enough to love? Alex I'm sorry for how your father has been and the damage that has been done. You are a wonderful loving individual and so strong.

Wo Stephen…..well done! Your interviewing technique has improved so much over time…..and you entertain your guests conversations so well and then you take time to dwell on them and take advice from them. A great natural tenacity on your part.

Alex’s story is almost a mirror of my home environment as a child. My father was a heavy drinker. My mother and myself got the beatings for when we didn’t do what he wanted and my younger sister was spared of this. Yet when my parents divorced when I was 18. I formed a relationship with my father that consisted of me forgiving him for his terror.

Another hard watch and listen. It reminds me that the people you meet each and everyday have their own weights to bear and hurdles to clear to stand there in front of you. Be understanding and very considerate. What a great previous guest question, A. not getting out of my current head space. TY

This has literally been one of my favorite interviews. I am crying. He was my stepdad and he would abuse my mom, me and one of my brothers almost everyday. I tried protecting my mom as much as I could from him. I once threw a glass bottle at him to get him off of her. It cut him across the eye and that was the last day I lived with my mom. To this day, my relationship is rocky with her. I tried telling her that I forgive her but she has so much guilt that she can’t even forgive herself. I’m in the process of telling my own story. This interview has been triggering for me but I’m glad I landed here. Thanks Alex for sharing and thanks Steve for just listening to her and giving her a safe place to be vulnerable. Much love to you both💛

Wow another powerful insightful interview. What a beautiful authentic soul Alex Scott is she truly is a lovely person. I came across her during the Olympics during Covd then again at the commonwealth I wandered who she was but loved her smile and style. Watching this and understanding from whence she cane is a testament to her character. Child hood trauma is real and alive and people are beginning to realise and face it head on. I really like Steve Bartletts, interview style he is emphatic and asks those pertinent questions with a real sensitivity and curiouness. Alex felt safe in his presence you really felt her pain without you feeling a certain why. Really insightful poww4ful interview. I Hooe one day I will achieve great things worthy enough to appear on Steve's podcast and purge myself and be safe in his presence. Keep up the good work Steve you are miles ahead from all the other's.

I came to this podcast from something Alex shared on her social media earlier in the week. Never heard of it before. This episode is just incredible, so honest and raw. This one led me onto listening to more episodes of the podcast and I have pretty much binged it this week. What a podcast!! Such amazing guests and they are so open and honest about what they have experienced. Davina, Jimmy Carr, Mel C, Jessie J, Richard Hammond, Romesh so far, and can't wait to listen to many more. They are really interesting and helping me a lot during a time when I am making decisions about work and lifestyle. Steven's interview technique is so respectful and open, and I love the silences; so important when people are talking about such personal stuff.

What a truly inspiring person Alex is,a depth of beauty,warmth,kindness and a caring that radiates from within. I have two Daughters and I would be so proud if they demonstrate those qualities as they continue to grow. As someone who has battled(s) with depression and had to deal with a speech impediment, (easier to write than to say!) this excellent interview impacted me greatly. To the 'trolls',you only voice your threats/opinions etc behind the safety of a screen. This is through cowardice and jealousy because your own life is so lacking of a purpose and respect. My already high opinion of Alex has increased immeasurably and I wish her love and happiness for the future. The word that came up continuously during the interview was 'heavy'. I would encourage anyone who isn't already familiar with the Linkin Park song 'Heavy' to listen and feel its message.

I was not hoping to see this today. I really wasn’t. I’m now 45 and this has triggered me immensely. Too many memories I thought I’d buried. I never dealt with them, just buried them. Now they have all cornered me and I don’t know where to run. I grew up in a household like this. Me, the oldest along with my 5 siblings were raised in an abusive home. Father a preacher and a mother who was herself abused and because abusive too. Lord I wasn’t ready to revisit this. I’m so angry! The voices of my siblings crying while my dad beat them angers me to this day. I felt helpless, I heard my little sister and brother say daddy don’t beat us. I love you daddy, I love you. Yet he won’t stop until he was ready to. I can’t watch this interview to the end. I’m too angry.
