This Clarinet is reaalllly weird. Like I thought between soprano and bass there was only alto clarinets and basset horns. But I guess there is a tenor too. So I have a question what key is it in and why isn't it curved like any other clarinet lower than a soprano ?
@JohnRandomness105
@JohnRandomness105 10 лет назад
I second the question. I've heard that in Britain, they call the alto clarinet a tenor clarinet. This may simply be an alto.
@zacharycoronado6749

I believe this may be a Bassett clarinet, which unlike the Bassett horn, has a straight bore, and is classified as a soprano clarinet.
@CharlieBladeRemus
@CharlieBladeRemus 10 лет назад
Zachary Coronado The Basset clarinet is pitched in A, and can go lower than a standard A clarinet. You may be right, but I'm not sure exactly how low it can actually go. I know a low C can be played on it, but as to how much lower it can go, I don't know
@JohnRandomness105
@JohnRandomness105 10 лет назад
Frank Halcomb The basset clarinet is usually built to low C. However, the original that Mozart composed for went to low B, and Stephen Fox builds a modern version to low B.

+Zachary Coronado This clarinet seems lower and longer than a basset clarinet.

Actually, I found a comment buried way down in the bottom of the comments, which includes Alex Simu's words clarifying what key this instrument is in. Now that RU-vid has the "pin" feature, perhaps the uploader could pin the original comment or this comment. "The instrument you see in the video is a prototype and the only one in the world. You can think about it as a Tenor clarinet or as a Straight Alto clarinet. The instrument can be pitched in Eb or D. I have two barrels which allow me to change the key. Talking about classification of clarinets is not so simple. Alto or Soprano instruments are not in Bb or Eb. Unlike the saxophone,flute or other woodwinds, clarinets are found nearly in all keys C, Bb, A, A, F, E, Eb, D and so on. When I start playing the instrument in public I was calling it "Straight alto clarinet". Because the sound is considerably low, actually it plays lower then a tenor saxophone, most people and the audiences where not satisfied, commenting things like "this alto is very male and low" which made more sense to call it a Tenor. Afterwards every single musician and audience I came across agreed that Tenor Clarinet is a proper name. All the clarinets feature a very high altissimo range, a good bass clarinet player can fool your ear make you think that he is playing soprano clarinet if you do not see it. If anybody wants to call it in another way I sincerely do not mind, there can be a huge discussion also if we should call the clarinet a clarinet and not in another way, my self i prefer to focus on playing and composing music. The low G clarinet sounds quite darker then an A or Bb or C soprano clarinet. I would think of calling alto clarinets those pitched in G, Gb, F and E calling Tenor clarinet instruments in Eb, D,Db, C The instrument was made in Turkey in Izmir in 2012 at the Hubb clarinet factory by the clarinet builder Tayfun Demirok and the mouthpieces currently at the 4.0 version where made by Pomarico in Italy under my instructions and design. We had to fully redesign the chamber, tip opening and table to fit the instrument. For the reeds I use adapted bass clarinet reeds for the moment. A specialized reed will be developed soon." from discussion here: test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=389766&t=389766

@fartwrangler
@fartwrangler 4 года назад
Most woodwinds were made in multiple keys -- this harkens back to days before advances in the key systems made it feasible to play with facility in all keys on a single instrument. I've seen and played flutes in C, Db, D, E, Eb, G, and A, and I have saxes in Bb, C, F, and Eb. . What he's playing is essentially a straight alto clarinet. There are often discrepancies in instrument terminology between North America and Europe, so it's not surprising they might call a "tenor" what we know as an alto. . What we call the "mandola" in the states, is regarded as the alto instrument of the mandolin family; in the UK they call it the "tenor mandola". The alto clarinet has been called the "tenor clarinet" in various parts of Europe, for a long time.
@jpsned
@jpsned 6 месяцев назад
@@fartwrangler The mixing up of the terms "alto" and tenor" in the USA vs. Europe also happens in describing the English horn (known as cor anglais in Europe). In the USA, the English horn is also referred to as an alto oboe. In Europe, it's known as a tenor oboe.

You can sound the same on alto clarinet. But you should have this type of sound in your head. Don't forget, this guy plays ethnic music-so he use different ambushure and different mouthpiece than in classical music. I obtain same "different" quality even on soprano Bb- because I imagine another sound in my head-not as classical clarinet..
