Join the Morris-Jumel Mansion and the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society in the commemoration of the taking of Redoubt 10 during the siege of Yorktown in 1781 by exploring Alexander Hamilton's military career.
Many may know that Alexander Hamilton was a Captain of Artillery, an aide to Washington, the "Pen of the Army," and a hero of the Battle of Yorktown, but is there more to his contributions to the Revolutionary War? In this talk, Alexander Hamilton Scholar Michael E. Newton discusses the importance of Alexander Hamilton’s Revolutionary War service, and proposes that "Alexander Hamilton contributed more than anyone else in more diverse areas in support of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution."
Michael E. Newton is a historian specializing in the American Revolution and Founding era. Newton is author of The Path to Tyranny: A History of Free Society's Descent into Tyranny, Angry Mobs and Founding Fathers: The Fight for Control of the American Revolution, Alexander Hamilton: The Formative Years, and Discovering Hamilton. Newton is a foremost expert on Alexander Hamilton.
Morris-Jumel Mansion was a fitting location to host Michael E. Newton's lecture and the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (AHA). Alexander Hamilton, as well as George Washington, Aaron Burr, and members of the first presidential cabinet visited the Mansion. During the autumn of 1776, General George Washington and his Continental officers occupied the house and made it their headquarters from September 14th to October 21st, as Washington planned his army’s first successful victory on September 16th during the Battle of Harlem Heights. Both Hamilton and Burr also likely visited the house during the Revolution, with Hamilton returning on July 10, 1790 as part of a dinner for President George Washington, his cabinet Secretaries, and their spouses.
Presentation originally given in early July 2021 at the Morris-Jumel Mansion in New York City.
