I love music... Modern music makes vibrate, vintage music (20's and 30's) puts me in a good mood, baroque reassures me, but only Rachmaninoff brings me to tears and gives me goosebumps. It transcends something in me. Welcome to a new world, and enjoy the many discoveries and safaris...

Rachmaninov used to say that Horowitz was the greatest exponent of this work and that he played it better than the composer himself. But Rachmaninov never heard Alexander Malofeev!!!. I listened to Alexander play and was left awestruck. So, just for the record I went back and listened to a recording of Horowitz. Horowitz is wonderful and you wonder if ANYTHING could be better, he is absolutely breath taking!. Alexander actually stops you breathing just in case you may miss some of the beauty and sensuality of this performance. His interpretation is superb and befits a maestro of greater years than his tender 17 when he played here.. it really is very very beautiful and emotional. As a Rachmaninov fanatic, I have probably listened to well over a 100 performances of both the Concerto No.2 and No.3 by performers of varied nationalities and ethnicities. Before commenting on Master Malofeev's performance, I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with the performance of the orchestra. Mr. Botinis is a superb conductor, and the orchestral accompaniment stands in stark comparison to most adult orchestras since this is a Youth Symphony. In their own right, they delivered a world class performance in this presentation of one of the most difficult works in the entire piano concerto repertoire. Seventeen.......seventeen years old!!!!! Before today, the only other performance given by a teenager I'd heard was from Stephen Bennett, and his interpretation does not hold a candle to what I just heard. Most people listening to this performance have probably never heard of or watched Jorge Bolet's Masterclass on the Rach 3, where he advises a group of six up and coming concert pianists on the intricacies and nuances buried deep in the score of this behemoth of notes. Malofeev exposes a formidable technique for a 17 year old, no doubt a child prodigy in his time, and he must have had some phenomenal training at the Gnessin Academy in Moscow. While he does attack this piece with the youthful exuberance you might expect from a 17 year old, he does not attack it with the reckless abandon the likes of a Yefim Bronfman (circa November 2004), or in a clown performance the likes of Lang Lang (commonly referred to as Bang Bang). I LOVE the way he just let loose with controlled fury at the end of the 2nd movement. That 4-note chord in each hand scale down the keyboard is supposed to be bombastic....and he didn't disappoint. The Meno Mosso C major portion of the 3rd movement is one of the areas I listen to intently in judging performances of this work. A lot of pianists will perform that section at the same dynamic without any rise and fall which is marked in the score. He gave me exactly what I wanted to hear. There are some areas that are a bit rushed that I would have liked to have heard slower, but that's probably to be expected from such a youthful performer. However, there are also some sections where most pianists just blend notes together without any clear distinction, so I was pleased to hear him draw out distinctive points in some of these passages. This performance rivals some of the greats. Malofeev has all the makings of the next Horowitz or Volodos....and this is a performance I will definitely be listening to over and over again in the future to come.

Very much agree with what you said about the pianist and the orchestra. I personally like Martha Argerich's rach 3 best. (She was quite young when she played it, too.) I find that many pianists try to copy her playing and make unnecessary/bad changes to her interpretation. Alex was one of the very few who played it quite differently than Argerich, but with almost rivaling levels of elegance and excellence. He is certainly a true prodigy of our time.

Dear Paula Forrest, I had the same feelings like you and was glad that such concerts and similar actions are still possible in this vanishing world of unrest, warfare, revolutionary developments and the like! Let me assure you, that in this age, your vision will remain unfulfilled, but to the contrary, this world will end in dispair and craze because man (and weman) in the majority have no interest in real peace and love amongst them! I am very unhappy to express this, but as a christian (thru HIS grace) for more than 30 years who reads the WORD of GOD regularly, it will come true only in the coming age after MY LORD JESUS has brought an end to this world and will afterwards erect THE KINGDOM OF GOD where then PEACE from THE LORD GOD will reign and there will be a NEW WORLD which is also called "THE MILLENIUM"! Will you participate in HIS KINGDOM here on this earth? I will but only by HIS grace and salvation which I have accepted some 35 years ago and now serve HIM and await HIM daily with great joy and happiness in the midth of all this rising chaos worldwide, especiallly the western hemisphere! Therefore: "Search for JESUS and HIS LIGHT, everything else is in vain!"

In these months of sickness, death and distancing, Mr. Malofeev, the orchestra, conductor and the MUSIC can reach out and make contact with every one of us. I'm a teacher, a getting-old teacher, and whenever I see a young person accomplish something extraordinary, like Hanyu on the ice, Biles on the balance beam, David Hogg and others speaking on TV after the shootings at their school, I am emotionally overwhelmed. Had I been in the concert hall for this performance, I would have been sobbing for joy at the end for fifteen minutes and everyone who saw me out on the street in front of the hall would have thought I was nuts. I'm very good at what I do, which has nothing to do with music, but it's been, so far, a 47-year career I can be proud of, not one particular moment. The only time I ever felt like I accomplished something in an inspired moment was when I sang Orff's _Carmina Burana_ in the last concert I took part in with my high school glee club. By any standard it was a very good performance. Our conductor always exploded at any comment like, "It was very good for a high school glee club." It was either good or mediocre or bad, regardless of who was performing. The dress rehearsal had been awful, but that night we somehow all became part of the music. Our audience went wild as I had never seen it do before when the immense sound of the last note was replaced by silence. It sounded like we had just won a basketball game with a 3-point buzzer-beater as time ran out. It was almost too much heart-pounding emotion for a shy 17-year old. I cannot imagine creating such intensity as Mr. Malofeev does and inspiring an audience to that kind of emotional peak over and over again by the age of 17. Bravo to him for his unique talent and hard work that enable him to do so and enrich us all, even at a distance.

When I stumbled upon this performance of the Rachmaninoff 3rd, I wasn't expecting much beyond technique. How wrong can one be? It was immediately clear that I was witnessing an utterly stunning phenomenon. Not only does the then 17 year old Alexander Malofeev show how it should be done, it is with supreme musicianship, confidence and maturity. The orchestra too is quite superb. It was only five weeks ago that I discovered this wonderful video; since which I've listened to it at least twenty times, and I still get the chills every time I do. I will watch the progress of this astounding young pianist with great interest, but something tells me that he may well end up as the most revered of all. This is the best version. I spent about 19 hours looking through roughly 28 versions of the Rach 3 all day today while working (artwork; I don't sleep much). The version with Rachmaninoff himself playing was excellent (obviously, since it's Rachmaninoff), but the sound quality aged terribly, making this the best. The tempos are correct, the beginning (most important part to get right, imo) is perfectly executed (not too soft or loud), and there isn't overt emotional lag. This kid is the best at playing this piece. The best.

Look at 12:04. Here, he accidentally brings in a part that actually belongs to the end of the third movement (cf. 38:26). After two seconds he realizes his mishap and reverts back to the actual cadenza. Even ignoring that I would not equal his (or anybody's) performance of this cadenza to perfection. In his case I think he is overdoing his rubato. So far, I like Yefim Bronfman's version most.
