I had a period of obsession with that sonata a few months ago. Peak romanticism. My favorite recording of it is Igor Zhukov.

@@PieInTheSky9 Currently obsessed with Vers La Flamme. listen to the Zhukov version until you are familiar (very accurate and clear recording) and then listen to the 1951 Heinrich Neuhaus version. It will blow your mind. Also listen to the Richter version. Two different interpretations that I like almost equally. Sofronitsky and Horowitz miss the mark on this one. They both peak too early so the last couple minutes sound kind of monotonous. Horowitz tries to make up for it by adding extra notes and it is honestly a bit obnoxious.

@@bozzigmupp510 It's not in any traditional major or minor key, and choices of systems to analysis for it are somewhat questionable- it's got a lot of octatonic-type harmonies, but none that are particularly centered in a given key. One could theoretically analyze it as a chain of extended dominant chords that all have super complex voice leading, but it's kind of an unsatisfactory approach. There are several papers that analyze late Scriabin using a variety of methods, and they all have their pros and cons- but the long and short of it is that sonata 6 is most assuredly not G major

Sofronitzsky is also incredibly amazing as an interpreter of Scriabin’s works. He also married his daughter.

i think the recording of the 5th is one of the weaker ones...she certainly didnt play it presto as intended by the score, it lacks fire. But she is not alone with it, others have technical troubles with it too like Anatol Ugorsky.

Yeah, sonata no.6 is definitely not in Gmaj. It's some sort of G, but it's weakly tonal. Scriabin himself never performed this as he was afraid of it's darkness.

The 5th sonata is F# major, and some sources list the 6th sonata as G major. The 7 to 10th sonatas are not tonal.

ok i can see that but im not seeing the comparison to ravel because his works have clear structure and so does these works if you give them a decent listen honestly i thought that too but you will here melodies in and out and sonatas truly are a pretty free form

Ravel is insanely melodic and a master of form. The same applies to late Scriabin in terms of form and harmony. If you were like me and the first impression of Ravel was Scarbo, it’s maybe understandable, but even that has a very well-knit structure (the motif in the first 10 seconds echoes through the entire piece, for example). In terms of melody, the Lever du Jour movement from Daphnis and Chloe, second mvmt of g major concerto, le tombeau de couperin, I could go on.
