Thank you for a very informative and interesting presentation. I just subscribed, and I look forward to seeing your other videos. Here’s my question: I have been playing for 48 years, and I have developed an ongoing problem with pain on the right side of my neck, extending into my shoulder and back. I am a jazz musician, but predominately I play with a classical guitar posture, and I studied classical guitar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Gordon O'Connell, firstly, stunning arrangement of Wichita Linemen!!! Now if you observe your video you will note the tendency most all guitarists have to rotated over towards the guitar neck and thus twist and shorten their left part of torso. I teach Alexander as a form of inquiry into how movement awareness can be improved 'in time', so although the process I teach does improved body awareness, it does not dictate exactly how one should go about any particular activity because its very basis is taking into account that moment by moment intelligence can grow and flourish and lead to unique ways to solve specific problems, such as you've mentioned. At the moment I am getting my band off the ground and hopefully by August will have the time to do more videos that allow anyone to study to learn and apply Alexander's process of conscious guidance to improved body/movement awareness and reduce discomforts that may be stemming from repetitive motions. Meanwhile, feel free to subscribed to this channel and get in touch if you'd like a free 20 minute video conference chat. Improving movement awareness does take a bit of study; it's akin to building a strength in the ability to improved and reduce the discrepancy between how we think we are approaching the physicality of an activity and how we are IN FACT doing it. If you'd watched your own guitar students practice and grow I think you know what I mean. All the best, Mastaneh. Info@rediscoverease.com

I have been playing guitar over 30 years have started contorting my upper body. I catch myself doing it and correct it but most of the time I don't notice it and sm in pain after I play for 30 minutes or so.

It seems you are very proactive in expanding your attention to your movement as you play and sorry to hear about your discomfort when being with your guitar. Feel free to get in touch for a free online intro session.
