@@LicksOfTheBeast both solos are truly epic and fit the song perfectly. They also display each guitarists style and complement each other. I have heard the song several hundreds of times but the solos still gives me goosebumps. One of the best dual guitar solos ever in any genre imo
I just used my usual settings with a bit of chorus on this. I am not really sure about the intricacies and excat details of the SIT sound specifically but if I ever do a deep dive into that someday, a video will surely follow 😃
Each time I watch any of your videos I discover something new, little lick, or a riff, or part that I didn't hear existing in a song even if I heard it like a gazillion times before! Just shows how great their work is and yours of course!

I remember Iron Maiden were in as guests on the Friday Rock Show (an old UK friday night radio show) when this album was released and they mentioned that they couldn't work out what time signature some of Adrian's solo was in Alexander The Great
Somewhere in time album is so often missed out as number of the beast gets so much attention, I think maidens best albums are from piece of mind to seventh son, also love the new one
Who knows... Could be they tried it at rehearsals for the SIT tour, didn't like how it felt and it just never fit into a set list since. I think they should do it on the new leg of the Legacy tour. Just so they'll have at least done it once.
I absolutely do not know this to be fact but had heard that it had something to do with backlash from the Iranian people and government because as “Persians” they hate Alexander. Someone will have to chime in on that but I think they thought the song would drum up trouble on your. And of course remember according to Nicko, Adrian can’t remember the guitar solo. Lol
Anything is possible although I would think it unlikely that anyone really cares that much about the lyrics of an obscure Iron Maiden song from almost 40 years ago. 🤷🏻 But again... I don't take anything for granted so... You never know!
I know that they never had played this song live when you did this video … but is interesting that you played the Adrian’s lines with the Murray’s guitar and vice versa. Really looks like the opposite!
What's awesome about this if not just the sheer talent displayed but how he switches from the the guitars that both Dave and Adrian use to convey the switch up in who's playing what at that given time.
This was always one of Maiden's most underrated songs, it seems like almost everyone ignores it. This cover was so flawless, Bucephalus rose from his grave just to bow to it! UP THE IRONS FROM ANCIENT MACEDONIA
Actually funny thing... I'm using the same sound settings as I always use for pretty much everything 😄 Maybe it's the chorus effect that brings to mind that vibe. And of course the original guitars underneath that still ring through a bit might help as well.

I love the change and phrasing of this song at 04:37, when I first heard that I was like "wow, only Maiden can capture that epic middle eastern sound!" Also the opening notes to the solo at 05:47, brilliant. And they way it slows down at the finish......just a masterpiece of a song. Great cover Nico, captured it all! I felt the whole Somewhere in Time album was just stunning they way Dave and Adrian played off each other, the solo's rolling from one to the other.
Brilliant. Watching this made me realize how this song is quintessential Iron Maiden…. To the point where if I ever met someone who asked me ‘What does Iron Maiden sound like?’, I could play this song and that would answer them. Brilliant playing. Thank you.

That's extremely kind of you to say. Thank you! I am trying to play these songs as close to the original so that viewers could get a better idea of how this stuff is played, structured and arranged. The idea is to try to have something for everyone from the hardcore fan to the guitarist who is trying to learn the song to cover it in his band. One of Maiden's best of epics. I was just listening to Mother Russia this morning and my gosh is that song underrated and quite possibly one of Maiden's best short epics. Sad it is so short. PS Defenders of the Faith is their best album.

When i was hearing this song (and lot of other iron maiden songs) it wasn't enough for me just listening to it !! I had that strong desire to see with my eyes their fingers in the guitars expressing that amazing feeling of that inspiring sound !! :LOTB we finally get Alexander the great live version on IM show; Ljublana and O2 Arena. I see that was probably the last tour of IM if they play that masterpiece. Now we wait in Poland for them. Adrian's solos in this song are untouchable. Dave's is also my favorite of his, I think. In my old band we used to cover this song very often, always a ton of fun for guitarists! Great playing Nico, liked the small personal touches you added here and there :)

I think Steve is ashamed of the terrible lyrics that’s why they don’t play it :) However, the instrumental section including the solos is probably my favorite 3 minutes of music ever.

One of my fav songs from Maiden ever. Sonewhere was the first album that i had, a friend of mine recieve it in his birthday in 1987, a casette and all the friends copy it!!!!! Love this song, the solo is incredible !!!! Great Job nicko!!!!!

the only solo sequence that dave "beats" andrian. his solo comes after andrian's like a climax, and when he uses the "oriental" note, that matches perfect with the persian attack of alexander, it really blows my mind and still makes my "bodyhair stand". its absolutely incredibly crafted solo, there are no words to describe it and i listen to it once per month for the last 25 years! (yeap i am greek). Hopefully the will play this song in 2 months in prague, crossing fingers!
Way to go Nico! One of the ultimate Maiden epic tunes that has never been played live. I love the opening line when is basically a father telling his son to blaze his on trail. Extra bonus points for wearing Judas Priest defenders of the faith t-shirt! Keep making us happy with your awesome playing.
The has to to be the most spot on attempt to recreate this song! Unless I'm turning deaf, all the parts seem to be perfectly executed to the minimum detail. If what they say is true, and Andrian can't remember how to play it, here's a excellent tutorial for him to remember 😁
