Darconville's Cat has a very conventional plot generally, a schoolteacher in a small town in Virginia, at a girl's college, falls in love with one of the students and from there all sorts of things happen. The language to me is the real amazement, Theroux uses such enjoyable language and style that even if the plot means nothing to you, the book is still very good. Also, could I ask a favor of you, as you are in Italy, can you find a copy of Antonio Moresco's Canti del Caos published by Mondadori in 2009? I have been looking for a copy and at least through US websites it is impossible, thank you anyway.
gurkepro - I can't recall the first time I heard of him, though it has been a few years. I do have a few of his books and I read Darconville's Cat little by little when I want to enjoy it. He has been neglected in favor of pop books and postmodern styled books but he deserves as much readership as anyone.
I have been desperatly wanting to read his novels, specifically Darconville's Cat , but with it being out of print I am not going to pay $100+ on the secondary market. I can understand of publishers feel there is not money to be made on print runs of his books but my guess is it is only Theroux's fault for there being no ebook version to be purchased.
I imagine there will be a reprinting soon enough. It is worth saving up for, at least I think so. Also, if you look really hard you can find them in the weirdest places. In Arlington, TX (of all places) I found a paperback copy of Darconville's Cat on clearance, it had been in the shop for 10 years, and of course I bought it. You never know where it might turn up.
Halfway through An Adultery and obsessed; thoroughly plumbs the depths (or perhaps it is the shallows!) of a certain situation that holds forever. Wow. The narrator's failings balance the too generally perceived 'misogyny' btw Zuleika Dobson brings horse chestnuts to mind; they bloom here en masse a week or two from now (it's been chilly).
Really? In truth, clarity can be beautiful. Of course, some obscurantists will always reckon all forms of incomprehensibility, no matter how pretentious, as a virtue, as proof of an elite intellect-case closed. Obviously, worthy works can be difficult. But to imply that even difficult works shouldn't "be understood" seems restrictive.
"Darconville's Cat" is selling on the Internet for $500-$1000 a copy. That may not be mass success, but that's hardly lost to the culture. If it was truly forgotten, you couldn't move it for a penny.
The current price of the book is caused by lack of supply because the book has not been reprinted in 30 years. Also, stimulus checks surely have some effect which means the price will drop. Though I am hopeful for some growth in interest for Theroux because his early short stories is coming out this summer, though it was not taken up by a major press. There has always been a gap between what publishers think people want and what they actually want.
