Alexandra, Anastasia Lisovskaya, Roksolana, Hurrem. These are all the names of one woman. Her footprint in history is huge, her name is famous all over the world.
Thanks to the Turkish historical series "The Magnificent Century", we know a lot about the beloved wife of Sultan Suleiman. But still there are facts that will surprise you.
1. In the series, we were shown the acquaintance of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and the Sultan in the harem of the Topkapi Palace. But, in reality, this was not the case in history.
Relations Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and Sultan Suleiman lasted 37 years, the first 20 of which she lived in the Old Palace, which was located at a distance of 2 km from the Topkapi Palace.
On the eve of the wedding of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and the Sultan, a strong fire broke out in the Old Palace, as a result of which most of the chambers became uninhabitable.
Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and her retinue moved to Topkapı Palace.
The Old Palace was repaired, and it became the place of residence of women who were no longer needed and had lost their influence. Forgotten concubines were sent there, as well as mothers, wives and daughters of deceased sultans. People called it the Palace of Tears.
2. Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska gave birth to four sons and one daughter to the Sultan. But, in real history, there were not four sons, but five. The second son Abdullah was born in 1522 or 1523.
There is still debate as to what caused Abdullah's death. Different sources say different things. Some believe that the boy died at the age of six months from smallpox, while others are sure that Abdullah managed to live up to three years, and he had the same disease as Dzhihangira.
Very little is known about the life of the little shehzade. The fate of Abdullah is based only on legends and speculation.
3. The girls who got into the harem were provided with a constant income from the first day.
For elementary small work and cleaning of the premises, six akçe were paid per day. This is about 18 dollars at the current exchange rate.
Girls trained in classes and already capable of administrative work - Kalfas earned up to 250 akce per day - about $ 750.
Favorites lived even better. Firstly, they already had separate rooms, and secondly, their salary started from 1000 Akçe per day.
Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska's salary was 2000 Akçe per day. This is approximately more than 2,000,000 dollars a year at the current rate. There were also additional payments for managing the harem and personal gifts from the overlord.
However, there was a woman in the harem who received exactly twice as much as Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska herself.
This is the mother of the ruling sultan - Valide, she received 4000 akce per day.
4. In the TV series "Magnificent Century" Ottoman sultanas are shown to us in luxurious dresses, with chic jewelry. But, in fact, these are all cunning tricks of the creators of the series to make the picture more vivid.
The Ottoman Empire in its fashion did not have such frank outfits. There were no deep necklines, corsets, lacing and fitted dresses in the era of Sultan Suleiman.
In those days, men's and women's outfits were essentially almost the same.
The image was based on a loose long shirt with a small round neckline, under which they wore wide, baggy pants - harem pants, which served as underwear. From above they put on a dress with patterns. A little below the waist, almost on the hips, they wore a sash - a wide belt adorned with precious metals, rubies and emeralds.
5. Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska died at the age of 56 from a long illness.
There are several versions of what exactly Hurrem was sick with.
It could be oncological diseases of the blood, diseases of the heart and its vessels, and even poisoning.
There is another version, described in detail in archival sources.
The last days of the Sultana were described by Kubetdin al Mekki, the Sharif's envoy in his personal diary.
He arrived in the capital of the Ottoman Empire in order to resolve several important issues, but for several days Sultan Suleiman refused to accept him and therefore Kubetdin stayed in the palace of Mihrimah Sultan and her husband Rustem Pasha.
The best doctors from all over the world have gathered in Istanbul for the last month, but none of them has been able to create a medicine that can cure the lady.
On the third day of Kubetdin's stay in Istanbul, terrible news spread throughout the empire - Haseki Hürrem Sultan died. And the reason for this was malaria and perennial colic, which drove the lady crazy and for the last few weeks did not even allow her to leave the chambers.
But we will never know the exact cause of the death of the beloved wife of the Sultan.
