Not to mention, Cuarón now has 5 Oscars himself: . Best Film Editing and Best Directing for "Gravity" . Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Directing for "Roma"
Now Guillermo del Toro needs to win again in this category so the Three Amigos of Cinema (Iñárritu, Cuarón and Del Toro) have two Oscars for Best Directing each.
He might win for Nightmare Alley. The teaser looks phenomenal. He does have solid competition with Jane Campion's return to cinema and PTA's overdue narrative but there's a strong chance of Guillermo winning Best Director, the Academy loves him
mi pelicula favorita es amores perros de inarritu. me gusta mucho el cinema de mexico y de espana. he visto muchas peliculas de lengua espanola. pero yo soy griega y queria que lanthimos gano el premio de direccion. su pelicula me gusto mucho.....
Annie Burke He did but it not impressive as 5 Oscars best directors in the last 10 years are Mexicans. Bong Joon Ho did for the Asian community but Latino directors winners are more impressive and influence Bong Joon Ho to win it.
0:13 Wanna point out Guillermo's beautiful and honest speech here, you can tell his love and appreciation for his fellow filmmakers and his awareness that "it's just an awards ceremony" -- even tho you can tell he's especially elated when his buddy Alfonso wins
At the time when I watched this live when he gave that speech I had a feeling he sensed Roma wasn't going to win Best Picture, so he gave his all in that speech.
Funny how the woman says "Fourth Oscar and second win tonight" eventhough he has 5 and this was the third time going on stage. The funny thing is how Foreign Language didn't go to Cuarón, but to Mexico, so that one doesn´t count into his records.
I really don't know what they were thinking when they nominated Adam Mckay. Vice was not a critically aclaimed movie, nor a crowd pleaser, nor a Box Office success. That spot was for Bradley Cooper's aclaimed directorial debut. Or,if they wanted to be inclussive,Barry Jenkins for "If beale street could talk" or Debra Granik for "Leave no trace",Which holds a 100% on RT making it The most acclaimed movie from a female director in 2018.
these men inspire me so much to pursue directing. they are living proof that immigrants can make amazing films and get the recognition we deserve! i hope to become a director one day i know with enough ambition, i’ll be able to do it
Alfanso Cuaron, Alejandro Gonzalez Inniaritu, Guillermo del Toro Vs Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, Francis Ford Coppola
supermariofan03 Foreign Language Film is not personally awarded to Cuarón but to the country (in this case, Mexico). The director’s name is engraved in the Oscar trophy as they accept the award on behalf of the country. It’s not like the BAFTAs where the director and producers are personally nominated for the award for Foreign Language Film (or Best Film Not in the English Language).
Kare Carado I know that. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves with the Oscars. If the Oscar goes to the director and goes on the director’s shelf, then give the credit to the fucking director! Jesus!
supermariofan03 true. Though Cuarón’s Oscar trophies for ROMA are now displayed at the Netflix headquarters. I would have thought he would give the Foreign Language Film trophy in their film museums in Mexico. His wins for Gravity are with him, though.
Both Alfonso Cuaron and Ang Lee are the only 2 people in Oscar history to share these 3 distinct accomplishments. 1. Both have won 2 Best Director Oscars. 2. Both have won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. 3. Both Directors still haven’t yet gotten one of their movies to win an Oscar an for Best Picture.
Should've been Bo Burnham (Eighth Grade) Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) Damien Chazelle (First Man) Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk) Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)*
@@georgeehret3480 Are you just saying that or do you know that he does like BvS? It's kind of an insult just to assume people like that film if they dislike good films.
I watched Roma and while I was waiting for the punchline the credits came out. Yesterday I watched children of men on Netflix. Turned it off halfway through and watched the news instead.
These three mexican directors (Inarritu, del Toro, Cuaron) are the most creative and fantastic directors for decades. Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant, The Shape of Water and Roma are fantastic movies!!!!!
I don't think people can relate to the feeling that it is to hug another mexican friend in a foreign country, both proud of what the other has achieved. I'm so proud of the three amigos. I hope many other good filmmakers come out of Mexico.
