Discover Psycho's behind-the-scenes as Alfred Hitchcock takes us on a tour of the infamous Bates Motel.
Alfred Hitchcock's landmark masterpiece of the macabre stars Anthony Perkins as the troubled Norman Bates, whose old dark house and adjoining motel are not the place to spend a quiet evening. No one knows that better than Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), the ill-fated traveler whose journey ends in the notorious "shower scene." As first a private detective, then Marion's sister (Vera Miles) searches for her, the horror and the suspense mount to a terrifying climax where the mysterious killer is finally revealed.

Hitchcock starts to say why something is and then when get just about gets to the point he goes to something else kinda like making us wonder what he was about to say everytime. He truly is the master of suspense.

Love that Hitchcock used Vera Miles for the trailer

This was Hitch's very clever (and rather long) preview for the film. It whets the appetite of movie audiences really nicely. He hints at the mayhem and leaves us wanting more. And no footage from the movie is shown. I would have loved to explore the sound stages and sets, all the interiors that were used, in 1960. Now, naturally, I enjoy the exteriors very much (the empty house and motel, which may or may not still be sitting in the Universal Studios theme park or backlot; I've heard that they are now next to a Dr. Seuss movie display, which probably takes away the macabre feel) ... but those are essentially empty spaces. But the sets themselves-- there was so much thought put into Mrs. Bates' bedroom and the rooms of her home, as well as that parlor in the Bates Motel with its art and stuffed birds. The whole production design, and the props. Just wonderful. You're immersed in a period. It's like time has stood still in that Victorian Gothic 1920's dwelling.

When this preview was filmed, Americans were very familiar with Alfred Hitchcock's distinctive look and voice from his appearances on his popular TV series, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". The black humor this trailer incorporates was also part of his TV shtick, like the lighthearted comical music that is heard several times here.

The final shot is a trick played on the audience. It's so quick that you could probably never catch it. If you've seen "Psycho" you would obviously expect the screaming woman to be Janet Leigh...but in reality, it's Vera Miles, who plays her sister and who never is in this shower, screaming or otherwise, in the real movie. Why did Hitchcock do this? We'll never know.
@abcpsico20
@abcpsico20 5 месяцев назад
In order not to ruin the surprise in the cinema... when making this preview of the movie, the viewers who saw it do not expect Janet Leigh to be the victim
@hebneh
@hebneh 5 месяцев назад
@@abcpsico20 Except that Vera's face is shown for such a short time, and because it's mostly obscured by the name of the movie, it's pretty much impossible to identify her and know that you're not seeing Janet Leigh.

seems like the interior would be a diiferent set
@boborrahood
@boborrahood 4 года назад
It was. Interiors were filmed on at least 2 different sound stages. The extreme high angle filming of Norman going up the stairs in house to carry mother downstairs was filmed in the original vast sound stage for the classic 1925 Phantom of the Opera.
@alainprostbis
@alainprostbis 3 года назад
@@boborrahood well there is another notable difference. It is leila (vera miles) screaming in the shower. Now she could have been staying at the motel, trying to refresh herself after the sinister ordeal that happened to her sister a few weeks prior. And when Hitch came to show us the place, she would have been in the shower, and got surprised as he opened the curtains. Thats a plausible explanation.

@@authorlydiagreen1862 The series was done incredibly respectfully to the original, they do not retcon anything, no one thinks of it as a prequel and no one assumes the events that happened in the series was anything close to what happened in the original. I was genuinely mad when I found out it was set in modern times though it grows on you, Norman and his mother were shown fantastically in the series. The Psycho sequels/ 90's reboot are the ones that shouldn't exist
