You’ve got a great review of this book. I used to get lost when looking for a method book for beginners. After comparing some popular books, I finally picked this Alfred’s book level 1 because it seems to fit most to self-teaching beginners. I never have to regret that I did so. I’ve been teaching myself from this book for 6 weeks now and so happy to see my overall skills got much improved: Hand movements, sight reading, musical theories. It’s really a great book for piano beginners! Greetings, Le

Thanks for the great review. This is the first and only book I've bought since getting a piano a few months ago. I'd agree with everything you said. The main problem l have with just using this book, is that I can literally only play what's written in front of me and I soon forget what I've learnt. Since finding your channel (through this video), I've begun to understand more about the wider aspects of piano playing and I'm beginning to understand more and remember more. I think your lessons are more accessible and easier to relate to, which in turn, is more enjoyable and motivating. I'll still continue to use the book, but only as a part of my learning, with your videos making up the majority of what I practise. Many thanks for the help and keep up the good work!

Incredibly useful for me, thank you so much. I had already seen 2 or 3 other reviews of the book, but they had left me with kind of a negative impression (book is not suitable for me, that is) or didn't really help me to make a decision in favor or against. Your review is 1) twice as informative as the others and 2) has given me all the information I need to make a decision. So again, thank you for your hard work!

i bought this book in Feb 2021, after quarantine and been working from home for almost a year I felt I need to to something artistic and not online. I feel I'm learning and developing. Every lesson creates the base for the next one. The book comes with a DVD which helps a lot and there are some tutorials on you tube as well. Some songs I get stuck in the beginning (most of them), but I have no hurry. I keep training until my brain and hands start coordinating. It feels really good when it starts to sound like a song :-)

Very decent review in my opinion and thanks for this video. Playing scales in contrary motion makes use of similar fingerings for both hands and this helps to start up the process of mastery, in a more logical manner. I highly recommend this book and then move to Fanny Watermann and Marion Harewood''s piano methods afterward!

I’m a beginner working thought the bluesy part of the book, I’m on “good people” right now and I have to say, they are totally corny like you said, but after about 2 or 3 months of classical nursery rhymes and childish songs it’s a little bit refreshing to hear and play something in a different mode.

I have level 1,2,3 of this book series and just about to start book 2. I also use Piano Adventures book 1& 2. I have found these books to be brilliant in getting a beginner started in the journey of playing the piano. I like most of the songs in the books, some are a bit boring so I just make sure I understand the theory and move on to something more enjoyable. I tend to supplement my learning by finding music I really love even though it’s usually a bit above my level.

I bought a piano book in French; "Technique pour le Piano, Solfèges + Doigtés" by Pierre Minvielle-Sébastia. It comes with a DVD and a CD. I can highly NOT recommend it for a beginner. There are no explanations and it seems it's for an intermediate player. I'm using it as a complement, but I'm at such a beginner level I need to use online courses at this time. I am so glad I found your channel since you have a great technique for teaching. I hate to order online for books since I'm concerned about the climate. I might have my local bookstore order it for me.

Hi! This is a fantastic review of the book. I’m trying to fix my sight reading and ended up finding the kids Alfred series in a second had bundle. It’s really helping because if the chord /interval approach. A few people have recommended this to me so it was great to see inside it here. Some of the pieces are the same but there is a lot of material I haven’t seen. For the money it’s probably a good investment for Reading practice material too then. I see they go up by level so that’s a lot of notation. Thanks for the detail and balanced perspective
@PianoFromScratch
@PianoFromScratch 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad the other version is helping. When you say fix your sight reading, did you already play without sheet music before? Or maybe work it out from the page but then memorise and not follow along?
@TheSIGHTREADINGProject
@TheSIGHTREADINGProject 4 года назад
I would read bar by bar and practice the movement (for 6 years!). I thought this was reading but it was really decoding and then memorising. I was ok with that process until the pieces got harder (grade 5-6) and then I realised it was slowing me down. Plus it was depressing memorising complicated stuff and still not being able to hit the easy.

@PianoFromScratch
@PianoFromScratch 4 года назад
Ah thanks! Yes hopefully it will begin to grow, takes a while though. I’ll check out yours later! Yea I know exactly what you mean, I was in a similar boat at some stage. It’s fine to have your playing ability above your ‘sight’ reading IMO. But as you say it’s frustrating to not be able to figure it out quickly or get through the simpler material. I like to treat them as separate practices, repertoire and sight reading. Btw in think you should also check out bach scholars channel, he’s far more an authority on advanced sight reading and he released a book called sight reading and harmony. It takes I think 150 exceprts from Bach chorals and he’s arranged them into 5 levels.

Piano From Scratch - thanks I’ve got his book. Tricky though as he’s aiming for total, literal hand independence. I like the Alfreds for keeping basic in the LH as they gave me a flying chance in the beginning. I do intend to return to his book though

Retirement and the pandemic convinced me to try reviving my ancient musical performance skills - 2 years piano in grade school and 6 years flute in school band. After consulting with various music savvy relatives I ordered a Yamaha Piaggero keyboard and this book in Fall 2020. My sort-of teacher is a professional oboeist sister living 1000 miles away. So far, so good, although I should practice more. I'm a fan of "chunked" learning, probably because I used to teach math. I particularly like the exercises for making fingers stronger & more flexible. My main problems are weak hands/fingers and learning to read bass clef. Sorry to hear that learning chords is not good if I want to play classical music. Bach is my favorite composer. Thanks for a meaningful review of this book and for your other comments.
@PianoFromScratch
@PianoFromScratch 3 года назад
It's not that they're not good or detrimental just to be clear, chords are extremely useful for all kinds of music. It's just that with music like Bach, there's lots of independent left hand lines which are just quite different to play, physically, especially as a beginner so that is something that needs work as well. When you say weak hands/fingers, it's usually the case that it's about time and experience/training them, your brain learning to control them in a new way, not so much about 'strength'. So stick with it and good luck with your progress!

There is a version of the level one book that includes a DVD where the techniques and most songs are demonstrated. Highly recommend getting that one. There's also a version of the level 2 book (which I have not started yet) that includes an audio CD. I started learning from the teach yourself course, also by alfred. But that only has one level, and it leaves out a lot of theory and stuff. There is one thing I like about that book that I dislike about the all in one course. The teach yourself book gives the tempo in beats per minute, so you know precisely what to set your metronome for. The all-in-one book tends to just say moderately fast, moderately slow. Which I'm guessing is moderato and Adagio respectively. But if they just used the fancy Italian words, I would at least have a ballpark.

After self teaching each day though this book decided to get a teacher which was great as she also teachers from this book. Fair comments, to be fair though all piano learning is "corny" even the most jazzed up arrangements are pretty lame but that's how it is when you're a beginner, you're not going to start off with Giant Steps lol! It's just about realising that this is all taking you somewhere. I have this an will be giving it a go, I've been following the John Thompson book as my son is learning Piano, it has a similar idea. I like Alfred's because it talks about chords and the JT doesn't do that. Faber is also good but as someone else said it isn't for someone who knows NOTHING about music so I think getting this is better. Please do more reviews, it's so helpful for those of us trying to find our way at home.

In the “Alfred’s Adult All In one Course Level 2” book, "Deep River", page 130, measures 1, 2, 3, etc. there is an arpeggiated chord in the left hand with a single note in the right hand. Do you play the single note with the first or last note of the arpeggiated chord? I’ve bumped into this in other songs as well where there is a single note in the right or left hand and an arpeggiated in the other hand and wondered if there is a generally preferred manner to perform this combination of a single note with an arpeggiated chord? --Norma

If it does not have a chapter introducing a simple understanding of musicianship through singing (solfeggio), a chapter for teaching rhythms through counting and clapping drills in marching cadence, or transposing songs and pieces to other keys (C Major to B Major through the circle of 5ths), then it is not complete.

The last ten songs in the All In One Book are an excellent review which takes everything to a slightly higher level. What digital piano do you recommend for a student who has finished book one and learning to play the songs better as you suggest with a teacher lined up who will hopefully sign the certificate? One thing to realize about Alfred is that it is popular music, not classical. My last teacher took the scales and turned them into double octaves.

I can tell you that there are many books out there that are self-taught oriented but I believe this book is going to accomplish what every beginner needs, which is a basic theory, technique, and reading. If you are learning from scratch this is what I'd recommend. My humble opinion.

Alfreds book 1 is good but as a complete beginner I found it very challenging and frustrating at times as hard pieces are just randomly thrown in. I am currently almost in the middle of of the book and I am struggling on a few pieces of music. The song Lullaby is doing my head in. As a complete beginner this book takes way more than a year to complete. I started with no prior knowledge of music. I also bought some other books to help me. I don't like Jazzy music so not looking forward to getting to that part. I was getting a bit discouraged as some pieces are challenging.

Yes I think you can learn a lot from the book to get to a certain point at least. Like I said in the video there’s certain aspects of music you can never get from a book by itself so worth looking at other things, online tutorials etc if lessons is not an option. Yes understand lessons are expensive to have consistently so out of reach for lots of people, may be worth considering getting a one off lesson once every so often if that’s possible just to have someone give you feedback on technique etc.

The learning curve in Alfred's is so bizarre. I can go through a string of songs in a couple hours, and then hit a single piece that takes weeks to put together. I'm going through the second book right now, and I just hit the Hokey Pokey. It's such a ramp up in difficulty compared to the 10 songs before it.

Hi i have the same feeling. I was in la bamba for about 2 weeks! Now i am on sakura and everything seems so easy. I guess that some songs are harder because it has more things of what we are learning and the songs are sometimes not gradually getting harder if you kbow what i mean. Have you finished the book by now?
@benjaminhedley1952
@benjaminhedley1952 3 года назад
@@fernandamccormack I'm getting there. I've got 7 pieces to go. I took a bit of a break to go through the Anna Magdalena Bach notebook (which I would definitely recommend as a complement to Alfred's 2). Keep it up. Some of the best and most inspiring pieces lay in front of you. You've got this!

Yes. It starts with basics. How to sit, hand placement, finger numbering. Easy one finger tunes to two handed with six chords. I have it and highly recommend it. Cost about $25 to $30 (Canadian). I have had two piano teachers and they both use it.

Probably. I couldn't read music at all before I started this. And the base starts out very very simply, mostly doing chords, so it's not going to be much of a hindrance.b

If that's what you have, I would suggest to work with that and then hopefully at some point you can get full size. Just do what you can with the best you have. Some people will say 88 or nothing but you'll learn more in the meantime with 61 than you would with 0

As a piano teacher for over 40 years. I agree and disagree. This book is the best book for piano students who has zero experience. It explained every thing. But down side is that for each subject they teach, you only have two songs to work on that subject. Imaging that, you learn one skill, and you only have two small songs to work on it. Is that enough? I don't think so. You need more songs to work on the same subjects that you learn. Most of my adult students don't even pass 2/3 of the book and quit. Because they are bump into a hardship unless they really determine to play. Be honest, don't just depend on one book. You need other books when practice with this one.

You need to find a qualified teacher. Self learning is always lead to confusion and slow progression. Every thing has price. There is a saying “ you get what you pay for”. To answer your question. You need to have other books to supplement. Every level is different. It’s hard to give you suggestions. Because there are too many.

Between “s” and “u” in the alphabet is the letter “t”. It’s very useful at the end of words. You should try it. And “nothing” ends in “g”, not a “k”. Adopting both of these might improve your credibility.
