Alfred Schnittke: Piano Sonata No.1 (1987) 

I'm not sure that beautiful is the word that I most often conjure with Schnittke, and certainly not for this sonata. Cathartic, incredible, magnificent. Profound, majestic, worldly, ...I changed my mind - beautiful.

As a mode of expression, he waited a long time to formally write a Piano Sonata. Absolutely stunning in its dignity and grace. It has the obvious gravitas of Beethoven at the very beginning. The macabre humor of Shostakovich a little later and then turns into a phantasmagoric explosion of modernity that rumbles along until there is nothing left to say. But incredibly he recapitulates the phantasmagoria and it goes round and round like a bulwevil. Dude is a genius.

A revelation of pain and beauty. Thanks to God for this composer!

Tchetuev -the pianist really gets this music-its quickly changing moods and utterances.Fabulous interpreter! This is difficult music to make come alive off the page . Brilliant interpreter !!! I would never have guessed that this was Schnittke . Immediately attractive and downright sensible . Makes me think of a more intellectual Ned Rorem less jazzy and florid . This will be my favorite aong with one of the concerti grossi , his 4th violin concerto .I hate to use the category polystylism : but it is true the man could write any idion and in the 20th century that makes sense . I am the same way .His many film scores too show the man had no limits. I am falling in love with this like a less agitate ,cold more personable Boulez . Wonderful , free , tangential easily communicable . This more immediately entrancing than the 3rd sonata will make me work harder to see the 2nd & 3rd pf.Sonatas . He is great in so many ways !!!

Listen it, abolish the surge of noises and images of everyday life in order to open the space of a place where contingency and representation give way to the immateriality of the sensible. Once the door is closed on the agitation of the world, an underlying silence sets in, a slowness seizes, preludes to a dilation of perception and consciousness. The expressive power of the sound architecture breaks with any form of transcription of the real to attach itself to the expression of an elusive universe. The color and rhythm of the composition is a language that gives voice to the exaltation!

Only during the final ten years or so of his life did Schittke's music become interesting to me. This is one of his better pieces from that period.
