You are viewing a Google earth map with an overlay of an old Alfreton map which dates back to 1820 .
As the map is over 200 years old we had some difficulty overlaying it accurately as it is not exactly to scale, so its possible that some of the building are not correctly placed .
Zooming in on church street, you can see the vicarage .
and a coach house, which was used for storing carriages for Alfreton hall .
and the George Inn .
and further up on Chesterfield Road you can see the "Inn yard" .
there are some stables and a another coach house .
also a malt house where grain was prepared for making beer .
and at the back of the High street you can see the site of the coopers shop where beer barrels were made.
and nearby a curriers shop where leather items were fashioned
Continuing on down King Street you can see the site of the moot hall which was demolished in 1914 to allow traffic to easily pass between King street and chesterfield road .
we can see the angel inn .
another coach house and a saddlers shop.
and another public house the kings head .
on the other side of derby road we see another malt house for beer making .
safe and clean drinking water in those days was rare so beer drinking was a necessity for everyone .
we can see a school .
a pottery .
a dye house for dying materials .
a smithy or black smith .
a candle shop .
the coach and horses public house .
another smithy .
a still house for distilling more beer .
a clock makers shop .
and yet another public house, the waggon and horses .
then we're coming up to the High Street which was actually called Nottingham road in 1820 .
you can see even more public houses, the red lion, and the elephant and castle .
a printer's office .
a bakery .
a clock makers shop.
and the Town crofts which were enclosed fields for the nearby farm .
Bell alley .
The Blue Bell public house is not shown on the map so maybe it was not yet built and it got its name from bell alley? .
if you have any information about bell alley please leave a comment .
and we can see a Spinning Mill for spinning cotton into yarn.
you can see The Traveller's Rest public house which doesn't appear to be in the correct position as I believe it was on the corner of Chapel Street where the King Alfred stands .
the reason could be that the map is not correctly scaled, viewers let me know what you think .
then we can see Radfords farm house and a pond which stood on the corner of Rogers Lane and High Street .
at the other side of rogers lane we can see Alfreton House and further east the roads leading off to Mansfield and Nottingham .
Then coming down Cressie Road there would have been a stream running from the pond at the farmhouse down onto Hall Street where you can see a tannery and the tannery pond and an open drain which ran down onto Derby Road.
.
If you have any interesting information about the buildings and public houses which were shown on the map please leave a comment.
.
