The energy of the students in this lesson is so wonderful! The lesson is done in "surfer dude" mode, by popular request. We all know that there are many methods of factoring trinomials out there. Here's a new method I recently discovered, called the "Berry Method". It's a really set method to take the guess work out. YAY MATH!

I'm an RN going back to school at the age of 37 to get my BSN and college algebra is required. I've not done math since 1999 and have been struggling because I'm in class with a bunch of kids that have just graduated high school so they remember the basic functions which I have clearly forgotten. I ran across your tutorial videos while trying to learn how to factor and solve radical equations and it helped this old gal too. I really wish you taught college algebra. THANK YOU!!!

I feel you in going Through that this semester since of the people say they haven't taken math for years yet they answer every question right. This method makes me hopeful except for the times that it doesn't work. In what cases, I'm wondering, would make this method invalid? Or did I do it incorrectly?

The method works because, at the first step of using factors (3x ...)(3x ...), the expression was actually made larger by a factor of 3 (this is why it looks wrong to start with : 9x^2 instead of 3x^2). The final step of this method just removes this additional factor. Keep maths alive and fun! Well done.

@9:40 you can tell you need two different signs because ax^2-b-c where negative c means different signs. EVERYTIME -c means difference signs result. so +b-c means largerResult = positive, smallerResult = negative. and vis versa for -b-c...because -2-1=1. However, when c is positive then the signs of the resulting factor are the same. IE: -b+c means same signs, both negative. and +b+c same signs, both positive. Hope this helps anyone who didn't already know :-)

Great method. The following is a minor tweak as a suggestion. Using the first example in the video, 3x^2 - 20x + 28: With the first step being to write down: ( 3x + ) ( 3x + ) If you wrote down " / 3" at the right side of the above, i.e. "divided by 3", then the expression would always be mathematically "correct". This would also serve the purpose of telling the student what factor needs to come out of the brackets near the end of the process. Just to highlight, I am suggesting the first step be to write down: (3x + ) ( 3x + ) / 3
@georgeseese
@georgeseese 3 года назад
Thanks Yaymath. At first I did not understand how the GCF numbers "went away". Consider the first problem 3x^2 -20x +28. You write (3x ) (3x ). That doesn't make sense cause it equals 9x^2. (We ignore that for now.) But notice, you have added an extra "3" factor. Write it to the left as "3*". When you GCF (3x-6) by 3, you get 3(x-2). That 3 can be removed due to the extra 3 above, giving the answer (x-2) (3x-14). They cancel each other. In the second problem, there are two GCF factors (2 and 4) that cancel the extra "8*".

I am not fond of the AC method, especially when there are large numbers, but I was glad to see you tell people what to do with the common factor you took out. The claim of a Berry Method had me wondering, but you pulled it off, at least for using the AC Method. Interesting approach using the leading coefficient twice and then taking out common factor. Thanks

At the beginning of the problem, you deliberately have an extra factor of three since you use 3x in both sets of parentheses. So at 5:55, instead of thinking of it as *factoring* out the 3, I think of it as *dividing* out the extra factor of three introduced at the start.

I have a suggestion. Overall I like the basic approach especially the start with the same first factors - like in the 2nd example you put (8x )(8x ). Put I don't like the erasing of the common factors in the end. It feels like a strange mechanical step with no reason behind it. However, an easy fix would be to explain that (8x )(8x ) has an extra factor of 8, so put (1/8) as a factor to compensate for the extra factor of 8. Then the 1/8 will cancel those mysterious extra factors.

+Lycan Viking, to be able to factor your problem 80x^2+68x+12, you first have to factor out a gcf which would be 4 so you would be left with 4(20x^2+17x+3) Now you may proceed to the berry method 4(20x+5)(20x+12) which would reduce down to 4(4x+1)(5x+3) and that will be your final answer, ps you would not drop the 4 in the final answer it would stay outside because it is the gcf that you factored out
@salsadancer00
@salsadancer00 9 лет назад
Bob Doe Exactly. The Yay math dude should have pointed this out. All of his examples had a GCF of 1, so it didn't matter, but for GCF not equal to 1, this method would lead to errors.

Was looking for another method of factoring and this seems pretty useful. I really like the energy you bring. Only catch I noticed is you can't always remove the greatest common factor. eg - 12m^2 +20m - 8. Sometimes you need to pick a smaller common factor so that when you expand the bracket back out you get your original term.
