Algonquin Park in the Fall | Canadian History | Canoeing | Logging History | 

To all you "Woodland Escape" Brothers and Sisters and those teaching our histories, we are blessed to have this wonderful video and a gift to have Peter and his wonderful family here to guide us on another adventure. Spent some time exploring Algonquin many "Moons" ago calling in the Wolves. A wonderful experience! Thanks Peter!:-)

Peter, I have proof that your videos are not only good for the soul but also the body, I have been taking my blood pressure all week as it's wee bit too high and after watching this video my BP dropped to it's lowest.

I went to Algonquin in 1977 . Great time. Went for 2 weeks.

All of my experience has been in Killarney Wilderness Provincial Park and mostly in August, but one year I was badly injured on my field job and went in September because I couldn’t get water in the leg wound. I live in the West Virginia Alleghenies, so I am accustomed to beautiful changing leaves, but the lakes and in the case of Killarney Georgian Bay adds yet another dimension!

Beautiful place! October is my favorite month...color, coolness and the glory of the fall all around!

Wow, that sure was a perfect fall day! Certainly better then the week I just spent in a Quebec park called Papineau Labelle. Cold windy and wet for most of it, no tent, just a tarp and hammock. Had a great time anyway, but when I got back last night I had a long hot shower, slept about 10 hours, and haven’t gone out all day. I guess I had enough of being outside. 🙂

Hi again:-) Im from Northern Quebec and am quite interested in old canoes. Do you know the name of the builder? Or maybe the town/ village he had his shop? wow the lake and surrounding area look beautiful! I picked up a 12ft aluminum v bottom boat for $150 in 2020 that ive been wanting to take out on the near by lake and do some paddling. Need to make my self some paddles first though.

I spent time in Algonquin this past August. So wonderful to see the fall colour. Now l am back in England. Longing to return.

What an absolutely gorgeous canoe. A real dream! What is the yearly maintenance? Oiling / varnishing? What's the outer material? I don't see any joint marks. Canvas? Looks transparent.

I am glad that the stunning wilderness has been preserved for future generations to enjoy1 Those Fall colors are just jaw dropping! I certainly understand about practicing... alone... outside... far, Far, FAR from others. Back in the day, my younger brother was learning to play the Bagpipes! When he was starting out on that practice chanter & goose... it was like he was trying to strangle a stray ally cat... and failing... badly! It makes for an amusing story now; but at the time...

Peter, the scenery and solitude are amazing. I canoed the BWCAW for 30 years and "visited" Quetico Providencial Park a few times. Thank you for your videos. BTW we are of the same age and tell Cathy she is a fortunate lady. Happy trails.

WOW! Cathy and you managed to capture the peaceful serenity of the Algonquin Park fall. The quiet waters and the beautiful silence broken only by the loons and the rippling water around the paddle. This episode is a jewel of composition and editing by Cathy. I think it is one of your best! Oh and lest I forget, thanks for the "wee bit of history". For a few moments, you managed to take my mind away from all that is going on in this troubled world. A beautiful escape that was far too short! I will be watching this episode many more times!! Just a little note from an Old Alberta Boy. I fulfilled one of the many bucket list items the year after I retired by loading up my canoe( not bark unfortunately) and did some fall paddling around beautiful Algonquin. I have since added another item to that same list, which is not shrinking, but growing,I have plans to go to Saskatchewan to paddle one of the wild rice lakes and harvest some rice the old native way, with sticks. Thank you for your videos they are always calming and informative, both items I need.

Such a beautiful lake. Great story of your wife saving up baby sitting money to buy a canoe at 15. That is such a magnificent lake. The Wild Yam youtube site is from Ontario. She just did a video of a weekend camping trip to the lake. And the beautiful camp sites there. She did canoeing and one day the lake was like glass like in your video here. Thanks for taking us all along.

I have been living on the west coast of the U.S. for 47 years and I truly do love the western landscape with huge mountain ranges with deserts and deep pine forests. However, the older I get the more I miss the fall colors of N.J., Pennsylvania and Vermont. This video really made me think I should relocate once again. This was a very nice presentation.

Now 'how many' young girls would work so hard 4 a 'hand-crafted canoe'? My word Empress Catherine, U surely had the 'homesteading spirit' early in life! And I thank-you 4 this lovely scenic vid...it truly calms the spirit. And WHAT a BEE-U-TEE-FUL canoe! You can tell it handles like an elegant swan in the water. And WHAT a day you had to enjoy the gorgeous Algonquin = Richly Blessed! U stated how the French were good at trapping animals and this gives me some hope. I have a most unwelcome/invasive chipmunk that steals like there's no tomorrow, from my berry bushes Each year I long 4 my fruit and each year I stand confounded at yet another season of want. Well how about that? I just missed you. Did the Agoma Canyon Train last week. Drove from Sault St Marie through Sudbury and then down to Niagara on the Lake for a few days and then home yesterday. Beautiful beautiful countryside through Ontario. I have been wanting to camp Algonquin for a while now. We will be back soon. That is very cool about Katherine’s canoe. Great video. So I finally bought one of those 18th century wool shirts! It was made in New Zealand, forest green and made by Swandri. I found it on eBay for $125 and was really elated to get it. I'll probably live in it this winter. Thanks for putting me onto this. And thanks for all the history in your videos. I really enjoy it and it's a great change from all the crap going on in our crazy mixed up world now.

Peter, I'm curious minds want to know if your wife's canoe... is it a canvas and wood, or if not, what was used in it's construction, as it wasn't one of your birch bark? Now that would make an interesting video to show to show and compare the two side by side... just a thought? When I was 14 spent two glorious weeks padling on a canoe trip with the Boy Scouts on the Fulton chain of lakes in upstate New York, and that is one of the experiences that has stayed with me over a life time, thanks for sharing you time and passion with us. Good luck on your moose hunt also and here's hoping that someday you might be able to hunt Tatanka Ska (Lakota) the great buffalo, my brother.

Hi Peter. I too leapt forward in time and watched this film out of sequence as it doesn’t interfere with your earlier films and the journey I am still following. You certainly had an idilic day to make that canoe trip and the reflection of the trees in the water towards the end of the film is magical. We are fast heading to the mid point of Autumn in the UK but as so often happens we have a series of Autumn storms crossing us from the West that bring strong winds removing many of the leaves before they have the chance to reach their most dynamic colours of the season which is such a shame. A couple of years ago we had a very unusual weather pattern for this time of year and the usual storms didn’t arrive and the trees were magnificent. In fact the colours were so impressive that our news channels and weather forecasters were encouraging people to get out into the countryside to witness it, such a shame it isn’t like that here every Autumn. Right…..back to the eighteenth century, see you there! 🙂 Best wishes as always, Mark

I absolutely love ALL your videos, the different colors in the fall are fascinating. Here in Saskatchewan it's the same, although a bit tougher to find a bunch of trees. One of my favorite times of year. Very beautiful canoe and great story. Keep your powder dry

What absolutely breathtaking beauty! The surface of the lake is like a mirror and the surrounding landscape is stunning. I still have a canoe that was hand built for me close to 40 years ago. What a glorious day to be on the water. Due to drought and heavy east winds with rain we're not going to see much color farther south in Ouisconsing. That is an absolutely gorgeous canoe that Kathy and you have. I can see why you still cherish it. It moves so easily in the water, almost as if it's alive.

Wow, what a beautiful place and I had no idea a birch bark canoe would last that long.

Some of my fondest memories are of my time in Algonquin Park. Had a Cree guide on another trip around Mistassini. My great grandfather had mapped that area for the National Geologic Society a hundred years before I was there. Thanks for sharing.

I too love to canoe. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I'm going to make it a point to get out more often.

Beautiful Cathy & Peter!! This sure brings back some good memories! For many, many years, I used to go on a long canoe trip - along with 5 other guys - and Algonquin was always one of our favourite destinations. We'd go for 7-8 days each year and covered pretty much every area of that beautiful park. September and October are definitely the best months for a wonderful experience. Thanks for bringing back those great memories! Cheers to both of you!

I just yesterday discovered your channel and subscribed. This is the stuff I was cut out for. There's a fellow who builds birch bark canoe's not far from where I live in North Idaho. Been wanting to build one of my own for some time now. I'll have to be content with my Old Town for now. I need a good paddling 😁.

Beautiful area, Peter. Went camping this weekend, first time in years. Aat nightfall I fixed my eyes on the first star I saw and , through the woodsmoke and flying embers, I watched the earth's progress by that stars location until late into the night. The coyotes tuned up and discussed supper until dawn. About dawn they decided I was too old and stringy and ceased the conversation. Really enjoyed it.
