On this solo canoe trip in Algonquin Park I encounter a chorus of howling wolves only a short distance away from my camp. I travel over 70km in two days, paddling and portaging through the middle of Algonquin Park. Filmed in September 2017.

Amazing how close the wolves were howling! I've heard wolves howl many times, but never that close. I even tried howling back to a pack on a northern Ontario crown land canoe trip late last fall, but they ignored my pathetic call, lol. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much for the canoe through memory lane. As a teenager in the late 60s I used to take campers through that exact same area. We would start at Canoe Lake and take north loops through Big Trout and Burntroot Lakes. Man to be young again, what wonderful times those were.

Bro, amazing ! I went to Camp Pathfinder in the 80s (on Source Lake) and we literally zigzagged across Algonquin Park-portaging handmade canvas wooden canoes... We were always on the lookout for the ever-elusive wolves, and never found them. You are extremely lucky to have run into that pack; in all my years at Algonquin we saw plenty of moose, one black bear, and the rest of the usual suspects, but never a wolf ! Now, I live happily in the Caribbean with my family, next to the highest coastal mountain range in the world, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, applying many of the skills that I learned as a boy and teen in the Algonquin backwoods... Paddle onwards-Noon Way !

Hey Joseph! Those must have been some nice summers at Camp Pathfinder. I have crossed paths with Pathfinder groups out in the park and I was impressed with their traditional wooden canvas canoes. I find on solo trips I tend to see more wildlife but I also got lucky with this pack. Over the years I have seen a dozen or so wolves in the Algonquin area and I appreciate every encounter. It sounds like you live in a beautiful area, I'm jealous. Thanks for watching!

I've been fortunate enough to hear AP wolves on five occasions, one in similar proximity to what you experienced, but it was during the day, which made it weird. Buddy and I were paddling a river, I don't remember for sure but I think on the Petawawa. We were s-curving our way down the river, and as we rounded a bend that went around a bit of a cliff, 20 or 30 feet tall, we heard one adult wolf with a long howl on top of that cliff. Then a pause. Then two or three adults started all howling together, and you could hear a couple of pups yipping along as well. It was an amazing moment, and jarring too because it was so unexpected and so loud! It went on for a few moments, then stopped. We never saw them of course, but we felt like they had eyes on us, and they probably did. Our next portage wasn't too far away, and we spotted some wolf scat on that portage trail. All of my other occasions hearing them have been in the Rain/Sawyer/Jubilee area.

I took my American wife to Temagami (10 days) the first time she'd ever gone camping even overnight. Hearing wolves really scared her (she, who is not afraid of anything). I found it comforting. Wolves chased out the bears, according to the locals. They are awesome creatures. We heard them all around and tracked them in the morning, but never saw one. Saw a bunny.

Great video, I have a question, I did one camping night in my city. I started to hear the wolfs sound near us.We were 2 people. Is it safe to stay? We tried to make noise and to have many lights next to our fire (we were about to leave). Is there any chance that these wolves attacking us in our future camping plans? We did it in a national park, based on the information, we only have wolfs, golden jackals and striped hyena. Also, we are appreciating any recommendation about the other animals.
@AleconAdventures
@AleconAdventures 2 года назад
Hi Ibrahem, in any scenario it is always wise to use your best judgement. Most of the time animals are more afraid of you then you are of them. Animals are also somewhat predictable and you can educate yourself on their behaviors. There are many things you can do to minimize unwanted wildlife encounters, staying in a group, making noise, keeping a clean campsite, are just some of the ways. Keep learning and keep exploring 👍

In our area we only have black bears and it is very rare for them to cause any problems. We carry bear spray most of the time but have never had to use it in the almost 20 years I've been canoe tripping.
