The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

People invested so much meaning into this poem, they needed it to be deep. There’s nothing in it that you wouldn’t get from Khalil Gibran, or even Jesus.

She seems to be playing Jenny Cavalleri, her character in "Love Story". One almost expects her to interject, "Hey preppie, listen to this! ..."

In my opinion, these lines were written by Max Ehrmann in 1927 and became the motif of the flower power generation, among other things. But what do I know?!

Max Ehrmann did write the original poem beginning in the 1920s. In the 1930s it was published with both his name accompanying the poem and without his name. Sometime in the 1950s or early 1960s a minister at a church published it in a handout without Ehrmann's name. The handouts listed the founding year of the church in 1692. That handout became very popular for some reason. When people used and copied the church handouts there was no name attributed to the poem but next to it was the date the church was founded - 1692. TV personality Les Crane then recorded his version of 'Desiderata' thinking it was in the public domain. After several years in the 1970s the truth caught up and Max Ehrmann was recognized as the creator of 'Desiderata.'

The poem belongs to no particular generation Rich. It's a poem for all times. Your data is correct however.

@@terryaichele9265Les Crane. I had forgotten about him. It’s astonishing how deep people wanted this to be. I prefer the Baz Luhrman version.

You got the date wrong here, don't you use the IMDB? The date was March 8 1970. Also, why have you never ever shown a full episode of the Ed Sullivan Show? It is about time you did. Thanks for the videos.😎

Ali was totally wrong as were many. The poem was written by Max Ehrmann in the late 19th century. Erhmann was an Attourney who lived in Terra Haute Indiana

Doubt, this reading was the best she could do.. Poised, glancing repeatedly to show, instead of reveal thru voice coloring the content, and hold onto a serious mind engagement vs acting semi-serious. An actress ought hold back her self, (however grand that one may be), certainly remove shallow mannerisms, avoid anything from getting in the way of decent material as this one. The attire, the head cover, the long manicure, do not complement that act there, but trivialize the stage and cheaply frame her given chance.

sir, that is how most girls were expected to behave in that day. intelligent and well-spoken, reserved yet approachable. it was important to have a feminine demeanor always, and then as now a young lady had knowledge respecting how to behave - it's just that there are not very many following the example of this girl anymore. you can bank on it that she personifies the ideal of American girlhood in the year 1970.
