Jerry’s solo album Degradation trip rules and has a lot of really dark depressing shit that sounds amazing, the full version of the album is 25 track and it’s amazing, if you haven’t heard it and love depressing AIC stuff it’s a must listen obviously because Jerry was the primary songwriter for AIC, so many great lyrics on that album too.
It’s a modern take on American Appalachian blues. Being sad or singing about hard things used to be just as normal as singing about rainbows and sunshine.
Me. I'm still listening. This song hits me like no other AIC Unplugged song. I'll wake up in the mornings & my mind immediately hears Layne & Jerry's haunting harmonization of this song, especially their humming. So, I have to get my fix & play this song over & over. I love when Jerry looks up from his guitar & over at Layne, like "Wow, we sound so good". Because they did. They certainly did. And they are sorely missed. 💔
@@jismazingsmart5329 take it from me... you find extreme impotence when you absorb yourself into humanity vs society. Feed my eyes... can you sow them shut? Pink Floyd will tell you, if you can listen, you're already dying.
I remember my years of addiction and struggle..about once a month I would turn this DVD on and just cry. I felt Layne’s pain, knew he didn’t beat it and just wanted it to be over. I’m now 7 years clean and I still watch this as frequently as I can. I never want to forget - Layne forever ❤
I've heard him sing the song on my pandora channel, and it sounds almost like he is singing solo. I wonder if he did a dedication to Layne after he passed.
@@bcrwarlock1974 Jerry dedicates a different song to Layne. Black Gives Way to Blue is Layne's song. This song is for Jerry's brother David. They grew up apart because their parents divorced. Jerry stayed with his mom and David stayed with his dad. We owe a lot to David and Sean. During Jerry's darkest battles with addiction, they staged an intervention and practically dragged Jerry to get help.
@@HotStrange yeah that was an incredible moment from nirvana and kurt, Pearl jams performance was pure passion aswell Eddie vedder put his soul into that unplugged set. They are all equally amazing
When the instruments cut out @ 3:40 and it's just Layne and Jerry harmonizing I got chills. You're forced to focus on how incredible their vocals are and I love that they cut the backing guitars out for that part because it made that moment so much more impactful
I’ve sang this song so much, I grew up hearing it but never knew the just how deep and meaningful this song was until I lost my oldest brother in Kabul 9 years ago. I hold this song very tight and close to me. 💜
Such a good and underrated drummer, absolutely spot on during this concert. He always writes amazing drums throughout all of AiCs projects and he is just a flawless performer, never gets too sped up and is just always on pace. He plays a big part in AiC being one of the best live bands ever. Dude is a legend in my book
The most amazing thing is Layne's breath support and lung capacity. When the guitars cut out and they're just harmonizing...Layne isn't even trying. Barely moving. No strain. Long, held out lines. Jerry visibly takes large breaths. Just like the rest of us would.
@@joesikorski4080 absolutely he was amazing at singing it’s so sad to see how fast his health depleted after this show by 1998 he was in really rough shape he was so pale and skinny and rapidly loosing weight.
My big brother struggled with addiction and schizophrenia, and last year we lost him to suicide. This song is cathartic. It will always remind me of him, the things I regret saying, and the things i should have said but didn’t. He had a passion for guitar and singing, and I only wish he could have lived longer to realize those dreams.
Lol I love your profile pic and yeah they nailed it on this whole concert I think my favorite song as far as harmonising goes is no excuses for some reason it always puts me in the mode for playing Mario kart
My older brother just passed 3 days ago, this song reminds me of him because of how we were always so far away from each other and barley seen each other, Rest In Peace to my bro, fly high
My boyfriends older brother passed a little over a month ago, and the same. We had an on going battle with him due to his girlfriend, all seems so petty now.
I'm sorry about your loss man. It's hard to even read your comment because I couldn't imagine the pain you went through. I just hope everything is alright with you today bro. ❤
"Pictures in a box at home yellowing and green with mold so I can barely see your face wonder how that color tastes" man what a line what a song there will never be a duo quite like lane and Jerry ever again RIP Lane you are truly missed....
Speaking as an "old guy" who was alive when MTV Unplugged was live, Alice In Chains was THE best one. Sure, Nirvana was great, so were "The Cranberries", and MANY others. But AIC was hands down THE best. The Eagles are a close second.
Nirvana's set was only even half theirs as they relied upon so many covers (6 I think?). AIC brought all of their own songs plus writing a new one just for this show. And the Unplugged versions of Sludge Factory and Frogs are so much better than the self-titled album IMO.
i wholeheartedly agree 100%. I stated listening to them in 1990 and have always, this fuking band was my fav over the rest, im an original generation X grunge, alternative, druggie (labels, labels!!!)AIC was the best. To have this unplugged performance sound as righteous as it does vocals, guitars, drums its rare. I personally wasnt into unplugged back then, because so many bands really sounded like shit. AIC in my opinion played the BEST unplugged. that was an era you just had to be there, and us ones that were, we were ridiculed back then for our music clothes and non conformist attitude of fuck yeah, funny how i was given such a hard time for being my own thing then as years go on grunge was my generations thing!!! it wasnt liked at all, we were just being ourselfs, didnt follow the norm, our music we loved others didnt give a chance until decades down the road. i was mezmerized by AIC in 90 and that voice is still mezmerizing an "origanal ol skool alternative".. (fuking labels)
I've had a serious AIC addiction since I first heard their music at age 20. I turned 50 this year and my addiction is stronger than ever. Layne's voice is unrivaled and IMO the GOAT. Still rocking out in 2019 and into the foreseeable future. RIP Layne 💜
Gemini Girl this is true I gotta remind myself all the time of how many killer songs they actually have, is crazy he’s gone can you imagine the music he woulda made by now
I feel the same except I was 17 and I'm about to turn 41. Man how the time flies when your jamming AIC. Love there newest stuff also. RIP Layne. /W\ We all miss U.
Frozen in the place I hide Not afraid to paint my sky With some who say I've lost my mind Brother try and hope to find You were always so far away I know that pain So don't you run away like you used to do Roses in a vase of white Bloodied by the thorns beside the leaves That fall because my hand is pulling them hard as I can You were always so far away I know that pain And I won't run away like I used to do Pictures in a box at home Yellowing and green with mold So I can barely see your face Wonder how that color taste You were always so far away I know the way So don't you run away like you used to do Like you used to do
I'm 55 now and still kick myself for not paying more attention to AIC when I was younger. I can't say how much the music has touched me. I watch these videos and feel Layne's pain. His voice is one of a kind! I wish u were here and could see the impact your music has had and is stll having on this world! RIP
OMG, I feel the same way. I am 67 and "discovered" The Doors...that has been a deep hole listening to all their music and reading multiple books. So now stumbled on AIC..I was never into rock, metal grunge, etc. (if it was dance/trance I was all over it) but am captivated by their sound and story. This is extending into other groups out of Seattle in the 90's as well. Now I truly feel like I missed so much. AIC will be with me now forever. The harmonizing...can't get over it.
to think he performed so well even though he had a bad case of food poisoning from a hot dog, he had a trash can next to him the whole time just in case he hurled lol.
Ultim4te guitarist no he’s right, Rock was born from blues. That’s why many rock guitarists still use “blues scales” and other guitar techniques invented by blues musicians.
@@skiboot1 "All " rock music lol. You're bashing him for not knowing that yet A L L of rock isn't derived from blues. The genre itself was born from it, but hardly all of it is blanketed in blues...So to use your phrase, some peoples kids....
i love the unplugged sessions and jar of flies more than anything else they've done really. the heavier stuff is just a bit too sludge metal for me. I love the heavy side of soundgarden but that had more energy in much of it and a more frenetic punk energy.
Man their voices are magic, but can we all just talk for a second about how perfect Jerry's acoustic sounds with Mike's bass, and Sean's kit tone? Man this band had synergy. Chilling!
3:40. The harmony in parallel shows Jerry grasping air, but Layne carrying without taking air. This shows how much air his lungs can hold. A most important feature for a good singer.
This song has tricky vocal harmonies, Layne and Jerry sort of keep switching their roles in the harmony in comparison to how people would do this harmony. I guess this is one reason why people keep mistaking one voice for the other in their songs and why people hear doubling on their tracks where there isn't any. It might also have been a way for them to sing together in a way that no one was merely doing backing vocals. Most of the time, this band doesn't have a frontman, it's a band with two singers. We are pretty lucky that they did Unplugged, it really helps people to appreciate their intricate compositions, and also helps with learning to sing their stuff properly for covers.
This song makes me think of my little brother, my best friend in childhood. we both partied hard in our 20’s but became lost in our own separate worlds of drugs… finally both becoming iv addicts. He is a remarkably talented self taught musician & always taught me about the best music. After a major bacterial infection destroyed one of his heart valves we both got clean. We recently had an argument & I really worry about him, if he was to relapse his heart is so damaged he wouldn’t likely survive. Scott I’m sending this to you through the airwaves. I love u little brother & im sorry we argued last time we spoke. I’m so proud of you & your recovery!! Life is too fragile to quarrel with one another 😢💕
Amen, life is so short and most don't even realize how quickly it passes us by until we're in the later stretch... God bless you and your lil brother❤🙏
Sounds alot like me and my bud Lou unfortunately he lost his battle with addiction 2 years ago December I'm still here physically but mentally and spiritually broken this was one of his favorite songs I think of him Everytime I hear it .miss you brother rip Lucius
Is it strange to miss someone you never knew personally? I never knew Layne, but I seriously miss him. I feel like I owe him a thank you for continually pulling me out of my depression..... for 30 of my 53 years..... thank you so much Layne.... you are greatly missed by one of your original fans!
Rest easy, Layne! And Happy birthday to my lil brother who would’ve turned 29 today on 4/5/23. This song always reminds me of him. Love and miss you bro!
I saw an interview with the band where they said that the rehearsals went so poorly that Mike and Sean thought they were going to have to cancel. Jerry was supposedly the only one that thought Layne still had it in him. That look seems to be Jerry relishing the decision to give Layne the chance. In my opinion, one of the best decisions ever made in music. Despite Layne's frail look, and messing up at least one song, this performance is one of the most haunting concerts of all time. It's just unbelievable.
Since Laynes since passed, it’s mesmerizing to watch Jerry and Layne sing the bridge part in unison. So haunting and ethereal, especially how the camera focuses in on Jerry as the bridge wraps. fading memories covered in mold, I think about Jerry carrying aic on his own now. It’s like the lyrics to this song apply so heavily in a different sense now, Jerry to Layne
During this whole COVID thing, I’ve lost custody of my kids, have been in and out of jail twice, lost two jobs and have been depressed. I just want to say that I know my kids love me, and that I will see them some day soon. I’m a responsible 35 yr old adult… for the most part: this song and this album bring me down to earth. Stay up fellow AIC fans. We got this.
Heck no! This band would not be what they are without Jerry's vocals. Layne had that high pitch and Jerry was perfect with his vocals bringing the tone right back down. I was telling my son that there harmonizing is what sets this band apart from other rock bands. Art at it's finest!
Laynes haunting vocals, Cobain's Angst ridden scream, Woods beautiful harmonies, Cornels superior range, Zapatas angry, vicerol screams, Lanegans baritones... everyone of em had their own sound, but for me Laynes just pulled my heart strings, so, so sad yet eleviating,!! RIP
Love AIC, but let’s be real. Crosby stills, the eagles, the righteous brothers, the everly brothers, countless country and bluegrass acts, the list goes on and on when it comes to great all time harmonies.
@Nick Mckinley, hyperbole much? I love AIC to bits, but this over the top statement isn't helping you much. Just off the top of my head McCartney -Lennon, Simon & Garfunkel, The Eagles etc comes to mind who are equally good if not better.
Their harmonies sound amazing. And damn Cantrell really does have a good voice. Crazy how he never noticed or pursued that early on. Staley had to convince him to sing his songs
CHECK OUT MADS season artificial red River of Deceit I don't know anything lying had one of a can voice Harmony perfect with was Jerry man Dave Grohl and Kurt Cobain just thought that was harmonizing:-) LOL
not if possible , absolutely better. There's that weird high vocal that just doesn't fit right on the album version. The vocals on this version and the dynamic of the whole performance are the epitome of separate parts coming together to be a greater whole.
Found out my brother’s been missing since July and no family bothered to tell me, but told my girlfriend today. This Song definitely is a comforting song in times like this..
I lost my brother to the disease of addiction on this day 10 years ago, in 2010. may Travis Lee Faircloth continue to rest easy. He had a very difficult life. I love you, brother.
I’m not one of those people to say that live versions are better. Generally I think they aren’t by their very nature. But this is definitely better than the album version.
Ive never counted days from using to being clean. When ive wasted about 30 years of my life already. I see no point. I just take each day as a blessing
@@Andrew-fw8rg because when nirvana's nevermind came out, they ruled the grunge scene not just in seattle but in the whole world and they ranked no. 27 in the rolling stone magazine 100 greatest artists of all time. but i prefer alice in chains more because of their pure raw talent and i love their dark and gloomy lyrical concept. layne is one of the most honest, talented and hilarious guy ever walked this planet. but sadly he's gone too soon.
This is one of the best songs of the whole unplugged show.. 3:40 Hearing Layne and Jerry harmonise together with no other instrumentation is just purely haunting and beautiful.
I am not the type to try and make some one share my beliefs although, I am the type to share my own and you form your own new opinion if you have one. I agree 💯 percent that AIC is part of something beyond our comprehension. I use to feel the same, throughout life though you will have your own experiences, that is if you're opened minded.......you have to be to learn. My favorite quote us People who don't believe in magic will never get the chance/opportunity to experience it ✨️ 💯 💛. Have a wonderful night, joined by one "if not the one", best bands of all time.
This band represents everything I love about music. Laynes raw beautiful voice mixed with the harmony of Jerry's. That raspy guitar and deep bass. And the drums just complete everything
Lost my oldest brother when I was 21. He was 32. This song carried him with me. Then I lost another brother to the same affliction of chasing the dragon. I remember seeing them perform this song with Duvall in Atlantic city and they played this song just like here in the unplugged...only time I cried at a concert. Layne Sings to my soul.
Love looking through the comments on these videos and knowing that AIC are still helping people through tough times. If you’re addicted, depressed, etc. just know there are others like you we all bond through this common escape. Long live Layne❤️
took my breath!!!!!,,,,that shit was POWERFUL!!!! im 40,,,,and that gave me jolt all way to my gut!!!!!,,,,maybe the greatest time reference ,,I have ever saw
Layne & Jerry's a cappella is so beautiful. This band is so amazing with so much diversity in their music. Just Love them. And Layne appears to sing that part so effortlessly.
Most fans know that Layne was the one who layered most vocal harmonies, but Jerry seems to have some talent in hearing harmonies as well. He knew exactly how to keep a melody and flavor it up in a way that didn't sound weird with Layne's voice. 4:13-4:24 is a good reference of how he went from a base melody, to a higher one, and back to the base melody where Layne's overtones matched it. These two could've been the S&G of grunge, well they are, I don't think any duo in the grunge scene did this.
I kind of agree with you, but I don't think anything can top Nutshell. The contrast of watching an extremely unhealthy Layne walk out, but the amazing power in his voice is just incredible. I've watched it so many times but I am just amazed every time.
This song live is way better then the recorded one in my opinion! Still listening in 2023 and beyond! Layne was an incredible individual, rest in power!
Been listening to Layne since 2011 (12 years old) and I dont think i will ever stop. I know with age music tastes change, you change as a person. But this band.. Layne has changed me. I don't think i could ever lose my softspot for this man. i don't think i'll ever give up on celebrating his life. I love you Layne. I'm sorry you couldn't be saved.
I just realized that I found them at 8 years old. My babysitter played them a lot. My 14 year sister was into Nirvana and my father was super into Metallica and Pearl Jam. As a family we listened to as much grunge in the 90s as we did Led Zeppelin or The Doors. I loved our blues Sundays. My father just loved rock and blues guitar.
I saw them play about 5 years before this concert and had the honor of being as close as one can get to the stage. Layne seemed happy, healthy, and was smiling the whole time. That's the image of AIC I keep with me. Rest his soul.
Whoever mixed the audio on this is a genius. Go back and listen to some of the other unplugged performances. Pearl jam comes to mind where the drums and vocals are all you can really hear. Especially on Black. On this one everything just clicked and every single nuance of the music can be heard
It is so surreal how I sit here watching this video going through withdraw myself, sobbing cuz it seems like my emotion always flows through me during these times. Especially listening to music as deep as this. Three kids and a wife and im just praying for the day I finally make it through it. Regret from ever getting involved in the first place sorrow from the friends I have lost to the same problem but I refuse to let it be me.
