Check out his solo albums man, boggy depot is really good and degradation trip is fuckin incredible, a 25 song album with no filler it’s amazing. Masterpiece in my book. He’s also got a new solo album that I’m guessing will release this year because he announced it last year, pandemic has probably slowed that down tho

Most of their hits were written by Jerry only yet a lot of the lyrics get attributed to Layne when they are really Jerry’s feelings and lyrics. Anyway jerry is an absolute genius and has written many masterpiece songs, one of the best musicians ever

You can hear Layne come in during the chorus, but not for the "heaven beside you" part (where Jerry harmonizes with himself). It actually sounds like the "hell within" part includes Layne to me, there's a raspy vocal fragment in there that sounds more like Layne than Jerry. There's also a barely audible low-pitched "helllllllll" at 1:04, 1:30, and 3:13 (for some reason you can only hear the latter two here?) which are probably also Layne. Not disagreeing with you, just giving more info.

@@gavinrolls1054 It's 100% Layne on the lower line, Jerry's voice does not sound as compressed when singing as low as Layne does at 1:04 (audible in the studio version but not here), 1:30 and 3:12. The first two are G#2s. For an example of Jerry hitting similar notes, listen to "Pro False Idol", his voice barely sounds compressed singing down to G2-A2.

@@DarkRattlehead Ofc there is always something different when a member leaves,but for me their recent work has been amazing and unbelievable because I have like known a lot of bands,but to be as consistent as Aic or just Jerry as a musician in general,never seen any,I know Aic can't make an album like Dirt,it was fantastic album, it's my fav album and it will always be number 1 album of all time for me,but their recent work has been so superb and worth every praise,bgwtb is my 2nd fav album from them and it's like each and every song is dedicated in the memory of Layne,and tdpdh is an album in which I believe it has Jerry's best guitar work in his whole career,songs like low ceiling and breath on the window has so amazing solos,and choke has such a unique guitar tone,and Rainier Fog is great as well, the one where they seem to go back to their roots I know a lot of people have been like William is not utilized properly since almost all of their songs are written to match the voice of Jerry but on a lot of situations William's voice shines,such as in Rainier fog or Hung on a hook and actually there are plenty. Ultimately the only people I have grudge with are only those who have abandoned or have refused to or just come to conclusion their new songs aren't great because Layne is gone now ,Layne was one of the greatest ever,may he rip,but the band is still making great music and I think it's better to love both present and past.

Ya I really don’t get how people love Jerry lead and written songs from the Layne era yet they won’t give the new stuff a chance which is mostly Jerry lead and almost all written from him. It’s Bullshit because the music still kicks ass and it pisses me off that these “fans” won’t support Jerry/Sean/mike just because Layne is gone. Jerry is a goddamn genius, one of the best musicians ever.

Jerry is 100% my #1 musician from the grunge scene, godly songwriting, amazing lyrics, great unique guitar playing, good singing, amazing live performer, the man just does it all. I wouldn’t even put Kurt 2, he was a really good musician but I’d definitely put Cornell over him. Jerry is unmatched tho. Anyway I don’t care if people don’t want to listen to post Layne AIC, that’s totally fine with me but what pisses me off is when this people show up everywhere saying no Layne no chains, or go on their Facebook page and comment that bullshit even tho it has nothing to do with Layne, the band wasn’t Layne in chains, if you don’t want to listen to the new stuff that’s totally fine just move on, the people who still enjoy them don’t need to see the same bullshit every time for 15yrs straight. It’s Jerry’s band and always has been, Layne kicked ass and he’s missed a bunch but Jerry Sean Mike had all the right in the world to continue on doing what they love. These people should just continue to listen to Layne era AIC and stop spouting the no Layne no chains stuff everywhere and let the ppl who’re still fans enjoy it. @@puppetmaster8551 Totally agree with you like I too can't understand this No Layne No Chains thing, if you are just going to not listen to their new stuff because Layne is no more, it's your choice just because you think Layne is no more in the band how can you say something like their new music isn't as good as old without even listening or even worse how can you say something like they should never had come back or they should have changed the band's name, Layne was more close to the guys in the band than the clowns writing no Layne no Chains,he was their best of friend And yep it always was Jerry's band in every album except tripod he was the main lyricist,and almost every aic song is composed by Jerry, and even his own record boggy depot he wrote that material for aic but because Layne joined mad season back then made Jerry to make boggy depot,In an interview Jerry said that he was pissed off when he saw Layne join mad season, if any other band was there with egos some of the bands have had they would have fired Layne for it,but guys in Aic were always supportive to Layne, they took like 7 years to make a new record and to move yet I hate it how some people label them as money grabbers or shit,but you can't change some of the people thinking,like I recently saw Chris Jericho with Rick beatto on RU-vid and Jericho said Grunge bands such as Aic and Pj were only alive in 90s and then Rick said he thinks Aic still has had a lot of impact on lot of bands from 2000,and Jericho said he never got into William era and he thinks band like these lost their way after 90s and bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden still rock. Metallica and Aic are my all time fav,but if someone says Aic is not good anymore and Metallica is still great is just bs for me, all the three Aic last albums have been nothing short of absolute amazing,compared with Metallica their last record was good,before that was okay and st anger was total shit. But still you can't change what people think, just find it better to ignore them.

Count me in on that. I like Jerry's voice, and I've heard MANY post-Layne AIC songs (and Jerry's solo stuff) that I like very much. But the reason I'm a fan of AIC is _specifically_ because of Layne's voice--I mean, isn't that why most people gravitate toward a particular band in the first place? Sure the harmonies and guitars, et al, are great, but Layne's voice was the big draw for me. Sort of like the original AC/DC with Bon Scott, a super unique voice is a hard act to follow if the lead vocalist passes away. Plus I sorta wish Jerry had NOT kept the AIC moniker too, out of deference to Layne (since it was he who named the band in the first place). However, I tend to be a purist, so "coloring outside the lines" for me can be somewhat difficult. But I'm trying!

It's from 1995 album "Alice in Chains". Can't say anything about the guitar sound, just because I'm not a hardcore fan of AiC.

Actually at 1:10 and many other times, the backing "heaven beside you" sounds more like Layne to me based on similarity with his backing vocals on the lines before it

@@motorologist Layne only sings the lowest "Like the coldest winter chill" part and the low "Hell within" part, as well as the even lower "helllll" Jerry sings both harmonies on the hook though

Actually, there are some multitracks scattered around the Internet. These were made by Alice in Chains themselves, they send it to Rock Band and Guitar Hero developers, and some hackers extracted the sound and put it into the web. "Heaven Beside You", in particular, was available only as RU-vid videos by JoePh, I ripped them as MP3s, not FLAC, WAV or even lossy OGG. For basic mix I use "Audacity", sometimes it also helps me to delete background noise from them by noise reducer, or the remaining vocal parts by Vocal/Center remover. Since the quality of sound already is far from studio, unfortunately, it helps only partially, and all job of that kind works only in case I would have good original multitrack files. But some of them were already scrapped from the web by rightholders, or whoever.

The problem with "Heaven Beside You" was: vocal track contains main vocals by Cantrell, with censored out "That's fucked up", while extras are backing Cantrell + Layne together, not splitted onto the second and the third tracks. Also, if you have a good ear, you would notice some background noise from drums, and lines like "Hell within" (sung by Staley, not Cantrell, that's why I excluded it from the mix), that's because the splitting into multitracks was not perfect already.

@@redraven3769 Thanks for mentioning who sang the line "Hell within"..I was wondering that. I always thought it was both Jerry and Layne together saying that line.
