T Me That’s a great one too, they have a lot of material that’s really great that not a lot of people know about. I’ve been listening to Alice In Chains for years and I had actually never heard this song until a couple days ago. It always feels good to find hidden gems
I'm a 62 yr old Seattle resident, lived here since I was one, and the 1st time I heard Chains I felt the same way as I did about Sabbath the 1st time; "been waiting for a band to play like this".
@@marcogarbin2977 bro you think what ?? People have life they work rhey have better shit to pay attention no internet back then mate plus.. grunge is dead since 92 😂
What did his voice in was not heroin, but voice lessons that did not indicate a pitch limit to which he should shout. He attempted to go above that range that was safe to shout in, and it caused his whole voice to unravel because the muscles that create the chest voice sound cannot maintain that tone too high and too often. I have been to that breaking point personally while trying to sound like Layne, and it sucks. The more you use your chest voice, the more you need to counterbalance that with head voice and flageolet exercises. Failure to do so will cause you to sing flat at first, and later lose range. As awesome as Layne Staley sounded in 1990, it was just not sustainable, especially with all that throaty distortion. You can hear him coming back to his natural light tone in the Unplugged show. Belting is kind of an illusion- it sounds like raw yelling or screaming, but isn't. Instead, it is the production and amplification of very specific harmonics that make the voice sound shouty. Those harmonics are developed from the muscles that create falsetto and flageolet. Anyone who tells you otherwise, is *lying*.
@@into.the.wood.chipper. I’ve wondered for the longest (and theorized the drugs 1st, possibly poor technique 2nd, fatigue from touring 3rd) as to why he started to sound more strained as early as ‘92, most noticeably in the chorus to MITB. From ‘89 until about the end of ‘91, it sounded effortless and powerful, but that 92-‘93 period that followed rarely revealed the same force. I know he grew sick of that song, but I wonder too if he changed up the chorus around that same time span from growing bored with the song or to go easier on his vocal chords (or both?)
Cantrell is my favorite guitarist, because besides being an amazing song writer and creating amazing riffs, he can create interesting and moving solos that completely make sense in the songs they're in. Most people just shred in key and deludedly think it's good.
"I just want to say, this is the last time you'll ever see this band play again. Because someone in the band has a bad aspirin problem...... nah I'm just kidding its me".
what i love about alice in chains is that they are like a non-hipster grunge band, they dont hate metal like other grunge bands and jerry will jam with anyone, like nickelback and if people gives him shit he's just like fuck you man.
You said it!! That's what separates them from the other big 3 from Seattle. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Nirvana were so hipster, smug and would criticize other music genres. On the other hand, AiC would always recognize their love for glam metal bands like Kiss, Hanoi Rocks, Motley Crue, etc. These guys are awesome💗
Being in one of the most successful bands of the time and still selling out gigs these days makes him underrated??? Jesus where do I stand in all this then? below fucking dinosaur bones lol
Man..... to be in my 20s again.... shirtless, & shameless!!! LoLoL. =) RIP Layne. Always. THANK YOU Will DuVall.... Jerry keeps making music now.... because YOU have the balls to get up there & hear unappreciative people scream "Fuck you! Layne forever!!!" Whatever the fuck it takes.... to keep THIS alive. .... miss you, Layne. Peace.
yes for sure! it was amazing to see them play live in Greece, their first performance there ever. And it was great to see DuVall hold things down and not compete with Layne's vocals, but do his own version. Layne, to me, is like the top 5 rock vocals of all time (before his drug habit affect his teeth/vocal chords)...
Man i wish these same 4 guys were still together. They had perfect chemistry for great songs.Nothing against the new Alice in Chains but i just cant get into it.Ive really tried hard but cant. Some of their new stuff is catchy but not like these 4 guys. This lineup was a rare pot of GOLD.When i first heard these guys play i couldnt stop listening to them.I was amazed how good it was and still amazed today almost 30 years later.
I'm here to be controversial. New AIC > Old AIC. They improved musically and have better production and better lyricism since now both William and Jerry write songs and not only Jerry. And the stuff with William are atmospheric and enjoyable. The things with Lanye were great but it's just because his voice was good, not the songs themselves. Sickman and God smack for example are boring to listen to. But that just my opinion. I love Layne's voice more than the songs he sang. But in William era, both the vocals and songs are enjoyable.
Inez>Starr for me. Also love me some new AIC, Jerry/Layne/Inez/Sean is their best lineup tho. Love William and love the new lineup and black gives way to blue is an incredible album but their peak was definitely with Layne and always will be. Jerry has always been the genius of the band writing most of the songs tho and he’s still doing that today so I will always support him Sean and mike.
@@adecentdelinquent8986 I think the most notable decline musically in the new stuff is the drumming. It’s good and hits hard but is missing so much of that tribal flavor and creativity from the old era. But to me layne Staley was what made me absolutely love the band, and he is sorely missed in the new records as both Williams and Cantrell kind of sound similar when they harmonize
I love how Jerry always has Layne's back! He goes over afterwards and plays along. This is one of my favorite early AIC songs. Layne's voice on the chorus, the vibrato and seamless chord changes, get me every time.
I like how Sean plays the percussions to this track...he cud of easily played this faster...keeps it sort of hanging in the air with Jerry's riffy guitar playing
A song worth to give everything a being owns to witness live. Came to my ears for the first time in '94, I was 8 years old and a friend of my dad who was babysitting me played this. After that, everytime we went there I asked for him to play it. Still one of my favourites ever and I guess it always will be. Rock on dudes, wherever you are, thanks for the music!
Sunshine was playing while I was away from the computer. I thought for sure it was William D, as it is obvious he uses Layne Staley's voice in his vocal mix. Imagine my surprise when I came back! ----but really, not all that much. William D has a lot to answer for. Jerry Cantrell said both he and Layne burried all of their master tapes/recordings at the dessert, in the sand, so far out and deep, no one would ever find them..
Wikipedia states the last time they performed this song with Layne Staley was on February 1st 1991 at the Off Ramp Cafe in Seattle Washington. Can they be wrong or is February 11th in the description wrong. Please comment if you know the answer. Thank you
It is Mike S who has the bad 'ass burnt' problem from getting it kicked so much! And that is what he gets for being a clown. That guy gets on my last nerves...
Jessica S Rodriguez yeah, I love his solo too, Jerry Cantrell has got a few solos that r simply awesome, RIP Layne n other members of ori band that r sadly no more with us
