The drums are so tribal and the bass downright satanic...and Layne sends it into the stratosphere, underscored by Jerry's eclectic guitar. (And I mean eclectic, not electric.)
Sean can carry a groove like no one else. Super well rounded and plays what’s good and best for the song. Nothing flashy or over the top, I don’t think anyone would argue that he’s one of the best drummers to come out of the 90’s. Hands down.
I agree. I see a fair share of comments like this, he stays in the fucking pocket and grooves while pounding the fuck out of each hit. I personally find some of his work hard to hit, especially since i use two pedals. He uses his since kick with tom fills very uniquely.
how is it even possible to SCREAM BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK like that? guy is just untouchable. I've probably listened to this about 20,000 times by now, and still blown away each time.
*****First you extend your range through classical technique, keeping an open throat and low larynx. Then you lift your upper lip in a sneer and squeeze your throat together to create the distortion. Singing that high, loud, and full is the hard part. Once you have range, you can distort it easily. It's just an overlay on top of the crazy loud resonance that you have worked for a long time to condition. Distortion can be had overnight. Building range can take years...
iviatty You won't sound exactly like him if your voices aren't already very similar. But you will have your own sound, and your own tone of distortion. The best way to learn about that is to imitate the "witchy" or pharyngeal voice.
LOL - This comment +++++ Sometimes I like to just re-click 0:58-59 / 1:56-57 / 2:34 to try and examine the brutal beauty of it.. it just can_not_get_old !!1
that fucking voice is gold, man. I just dont understand how someone can sound this good. for those who do not see the pure GOLD in this VOICE then you must NEVER have tried to sing, be in a band, or are in a band now; because what he has is truly untouchable.
When Layne hits and holds the note at 2:33 it gives me goosebumps. This is what makes rock and roll so incredible. Sounds JUST AS GOOD in the studio as it does LIVE. True definition of music.
Seeing him live was an AMAZING!! You could actually feel his voice! I don't know how else to explain it! If you've ever watched an old Elvis Presley concert video with the crowd going crazy...it was like that for AIC, except add moshing lol I still to this day cry over the world losing such a genuine pure soul. He was tormented but he was so humble & funny & full of love ❤
I like to think that when people die they get to go to a place where they stay at their peak forever, and get to do what they did while alive or whatever the hell they want. So yeah, Layne is up there still performing at his best!
Layne's little twist on the first half of the second chorus is the smoothest shit ever. Im actually questioning my sexuality over it that's how amazed I am by that dudes voice. Holy fuck.
Kurt = John Lennon (scream singing), Eddie V = Jim Morrison (Speak Singing), Chris C. = Robert Plant esche (vocal range) Layne S + No One.. He was his own, and look at all the Rock/Metal bands today who look to Layne as an influence. He invented the 'Yarl Snarl'. Layne and I would say Mark Lanegan are the 2 most Identifiable, Unique voices of that era.
Call me an heretic but Chris voice was way better than Robert Plant, basically same range but more deep, more sustained, more powerful and when he got over 35 Chris timber became one of the most unique in Rock history. i freaking miss him and layne...
Gunnar Eli Sigurjonsson I know this to be true, I've always had to have my daily dose of Layne , since the first time I seen that gorgeous face and that very first song on the awesome MTV Man in the Box.... He had my attention... and still does. That's my first memory, could have been before that... my memory sucks more than the new music they have out today..
I’m 12 years old and I listen to this song every day before school. It gives me courage to be my true self in a school full of fake people. I hope to be in a band like this someday.
Thats rad. Stay true man, always. Never look back and go after your passion. Along the way you will have to do many sacrifices, like time and social things. Don't ever regret.
Back in the days we almost took this quality for granted. We loved it. This was base line. Not one of us thought this would be the peak of hard rock, and one of the last truly great bands.
I read an article a long time ago that said jerry cantrell's solos never went with the song being played. That is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. Nothing could be further from the truth. That man can play the hell out of a guitar and is style of soloing matches up with the music as well as any other guitarist ever.
Oh absolutely, Cantrell is amazing on the guitar & a lyrical genius as well. He knows exactly what fits!!! These idiots ought to come ask us, the real fans what sounds like What??😉
i know someone mentioned it here before but do you get chills listening to Layne? I legit get goose bumps; its crazy. NO OTHER band/singer gives me that; not even the beatles who I have loved for other; same goes for alot of the grunge scene. does Layne just MAKE you feel it? that emotion he puts in. nuts.
This is THE BEST version of this song I can find...Layne's vocals are spot-on! It's just crazy the difference in Layne between this and the whole Unplugged set...very sad :(
89Pleasek It's sad times my friend, all the greats are slowly going away. Soon we wont have any good music. Layne was a gifted man that made any song shine like stars brotha.
Love the way Starr's baseline just drives the song along, while Cantrell's guitar just accentuates said bass line with his playing... not too much, but just enough to be top tier music writing. Then the whole song has got Sean's impeccable drumming as the backbone, with Layne and Jerry doing their back and forth singing, Layne crushing the lead vocals. This band was truly remarkable... always has been one of my favorites, since the cool days of mtv when they'd play actual music videos, instead of utter *CRAP.*
If you’re looking for Layne’s best performance ever of “Would” look no further: You found it. 2:33 is one of the greatest things I’ve ever heard him do Live.
my high school soundtrack is rounded out by: 1) Stone Temple Pilots 2) Marilyn Manson (Mechanical Animals & Holywood) 3) RHCP (Californication & By the Way) 4) Pearl Jam (Ten) 5) Alice In Chains 6) Collective Soul (H.A.A.T.L.U.) 7) Iron Maiden (Somewhere in Time) 8) Mother Love Bone 9) Poison (Native Tongue) 10) Aqua (Aquirium)
Huge moment at the start of this vid is Riki Rachtman interviewing Anthony Kiedis before the band starts and Kiedis realises he's just about to watch AiC for the first time....!!!
It’s just so heartwarming to me that regardless of which song, any AiC song’s comments section looks like this one - just filled with respect and great admiration for the band. Does anyone ever have anything bad to say about AiC? I have yet to see. So apparentaly I (and you guys) must have great taste in music, seeing as they are my favorite band of all time.
Just heard this live version for the first time today.....life changing!!!! Incredible. Seeing AIC live for the first time in August. I know it’s not Layne...but they still rock and I can’t wait!
My favorite AIC song... I wish it was longer. The haunting change in key and chorus makes me cry. I also can't get over wondering about those lyrics, since Jerry wrote this about his friend Andy Wood who overdosed on heroin at 24. I wish Layne and Mike had taken the words to heart. ❤🙏 Know me broken by my master Teach thee on child of love hereafter Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way Drifting body, it's sole desertion Flying not yet, quite the notion Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way Into the flood again Same old trip it was back then So I made a big mistake Try to see it once my way Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home? Have I gone? And left you here alone? Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home? Have I gone? And left you here alone? If I would, could you?
DAMN ... I'm having a hard time believing I'm watching this video ... I have a VHS tape with the Single's premier on it including this song. Thank you who ever you are for sharing this footage on line!!! I love Alice anyway - have Facelift and refer to it from time to time ... love to see this too!!
dude, his voice just blows fucking people out of the water. I dont get how this guy is not a fucking legend. he should be right along side john lennon. the pitches he can hit are just mind blowing. INTO THE BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOD AGAIN! SAME OLD TRIP IT WAS BACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK THEN!
dominico collora you dont think he hits notes on that final verse? I was front man for a few smaller bands and I disagree if you think he's missing those notes, even the final. the first 2 yes, but the last 2 I feel he nails.
dominico collora Wow.... As a "musician," one would think you might appreciate that Layne might actually have sung it differently **intentionally**. Being the lyricist, lead singer, creator - I'd say poetic license applies. Besides, if he hadn't been drunk one night at a party and offered a bed, clothes, food, and shelter to a complete stranger (at the time... Jerry) AIC may never have come to be. Sure, their talents would have taken them places the likes most of us could never dream of, but still... AIC will never be what it was with Layne. They're good! But they are no longer exceptional... Have a great day!
Dominico Collora what not intentional? he has said BLOOD in many live performances; heroin goes INTO THE BLOOD AGAIN! layne is a dope fiend; the song is about another dope fiend who died over an overdose because the heroin went INTO THE BLOOD, AGAIN!
This performance was my first time listening to Alice in chains. Ever since that day I fell in love with laynes voice and music. Sad to see musicians like him pass with so much talent. 😢
Layne and Alice in Chains, was the most powerful primal sounding grunge rock band that ever came out of Seattle. It's truly unbelievable how powerful his voice was.
