Maybe the Cat personifies her acceptance of her potential madness and deviance. Like, the Cat’s her self-consciousness.

The book's take is also fascinating in that it explicitly does the fading as alice says it's rude to just appear like that. It also causes a stir at the end of the film.

That’s a nice detail I honestly didn’t know when I first saw this as a teenager. That’s like how they turned bit of the walrus and the carpenter poem into their song.

It was used because the jabberwocky wasn’t used in the final movie, so they wanted to include the iconic poem somewhere. They chose to get rid of, “I’m Odd” and chose the jabberwocky poem… I think it’s a lot more fitting than I’m Odd.

It's kind of ironic for me, since I'm in a school production of Alice And Wonderland And Back Again. The Jabberwocky poem is a big deal, but I'm the ONLY one there who can both pronounce it and understand it, and I AM the Cheshire Cat.

But the one in the original book looks different. Maybe you’re just referring to your opinion that you like this Cheshire Cat better than the tim burton one.

It was really a playful joke on their comment. They said, "Nothing beats the original cheshire cat." But anyone who knows this movie was based on a book also knows that this isn't the 'original' cheshire cat. So I simply made a joke that this version is just as good as the version from the original book. TBH though, yes I think both this version and the original book version by Lewis Carroll are both better than Tim Burton's.

Same here, I was really surprised when I found out some people were actually scared of him when they were little. If you ask me, he only truly looks even remotely unsettling the one time he’s *not* smiling. Otherwise, he’s just so cheery and friendly (and at least he actually lets Alice talk and gives her _some_ direction, even if it wasn’t very helpful) that I can’t help loving him. And even as a kid, I did in fact realize that he was probably being deliberately unhelpful in the Queen’s garden and at the trial, but like. I could never hate him. I’ve never even considered him a villain like some people apparently do. Maybe that’s just the cat lover in me, tho. I’m also a big fan of purple and cool animation effects, so that probably helped. 🩷💜

I think it's because they're going for creepy other than borderline maddness. This Cheshire, along with the world he resides in, weren't meant to be creepy but supposed to be completely mad. Sweet, calm, curious for one moment, completely murderous and unreasonable the next for the smallest thing. Cheshire is probanly the worst because you have no idea what he's capable of. Everyone else you can see blow their tops off and it's frightening but cheshire keeps his "cool" which makes him all the more dangerous. His smile isn't meant to be creepy. It's hiding a complete madman that knows entirely that he's mad. You don't know how mad. That's what's so scary here.

John Isn't it!!! I just can't help but feel like this entire sceen is someone's interpretation of what real life is like, and I might be mad to agree with that. When the cat laughs after saying we're all mad around here, it feels like he's laughing at me. Because we really all are a bit mad, aren't we?

@@18skeltor Oh yes, most indeedee... Something about older Disney movies... They tend to show up in your dreams quite often, at least when you're younger... With Dumbo, even when I was a little boy, I sensed a certain type of black culture with the crows, etc., something older and more from the South, etc. Of course I wasn't sure the crows were friendly at first, they seemed more interested in teasing, etc. Pinocchio was also a bit like Dumbo. Same thing with Winnie the Pooh. All 3 movies had some pretty darn trippy, crazy weird scenes... 😲😦🤪🤯😜🤔🐘🐻🤥🍄 I mean, "Pink Elephants on Parade", GEEEEZZZ... With Robin Hood, there were scenes that had a big impact on me regarding my boyhood understanding of the culture of Medieval England, along with the Sword in the Stone. The opening sequence of Robin Hood had a particularly strong impact on me, I had a nightmare where I was watching these animals go across a yellow-orange, scratchy movie theater screen, and they kept getting bigger and more menacing looking, and the lights were getting lower/the theater was getting very dark, and no one was there anymore. I decided to high tail it out of there of course/woke up quickly... But yeah, there is that feeling you get on occasion, where some part of your psyche is suggesting to you that a character in an animated movie is somehow aware of your existence, and is laughing at you, or knows something you don't. I suppose some would ascribe this sort of being to be more of a demon, etc., but there are times when I prefer to think of the world as being a lot more mysterious/unexplained, etc. still...
