I would 100% recommend for you to watch the entire cutscene movie of this game, the story and the world are amazing. Also there really isn't any other good retellings of Alice in Wonderland that take and make the whole premise so unique and different.
Woaah nostalgic game! From what I remember, the underlying context is that Alice used to have a normal wonderland like in the tv shows, but after a tragic event happened with her family, her wonderland is now warped and disgusting, and she is basically rediscovering it
American Mcgee's Alice and Alice madness returns are such treasures that shouldn't be overlooked. He has been trying to get a third game off the ground. U can see a lot of concept stuff for that on American Mcgee's youtube channel.
From what i remember from the game the wonderland represents Alice's mental state. And after something happened to her family she is struggling with mental health. And the wonderland is changing because of that. Or something along those lines.
I completely forgot about this, back when hack n slashes were big. I always loved the style and artstyle of this game. I loved the concept when it first came out and I wanted to find out what was actually going on. Plus the "Madness isn't a state of mind, it's a place" hooked me.
@@GirlofCulture hack n slashes have always been clunky, animations having to complete before you can dodge, hitting nothing because you're facing the wrong way. Really glad I still have this and it's available on Xbox (plus the prequel America McGee's Alice is free.)
This is such a great version of the Alice story. I hope the 3rd game can be made one day, it's been in just concept stage for over a decade now. Also heard rumors of a deal to adapt the 1st game into a show might be in the works.
@@GirlofCulture I see. McGee sure has high hopes. But I believe EA is only bringing back series that sold very well, let's not forget EA is very money driven. But let's play the optimism card and say, this will bring Alice Asylum. But will McGee be allowed full creative control ? Or will EA step in and again cut the more mental stuff like they did with Alice Madness Returns ? A similar fate that falled upon Dead Space 1 and 2. I would rather have a remake of the first and a remaster for the 2nd Alice games, in order to gain new and old audience, then with the hype and build up from the 2 games make the third and final one.
The creator of this game, American McGee, worked on several old school Doom and Quake games at id before starting his own studio and making the original American McGee's Alice, of which this game is a sequel. McGee loves the dark fairy tale aesthetic, and has worked on other games of the type using the Grimm fairy tales and even Frank Baum's Oz stories.
If you didn't know, this game is a sequel to one from 2000! American McGee's Alice, named for one of the main dudes working on it (not his idea; he hated it) was a pretty cool and terrifying game from my childhood. American McGee also worked on games like Doom 1 and 2 and Quake!
American McGee recently released a design bible for a 3rd installment of the Alice series (Alice:Asylum), and it looks AMAZING. Alice: Madness Returns is one of my favourite games of all time. Unfortunately, I don't think they have a publisher willing to fund and distribute the project yet.
If you two didn't play this game series (1: American McGee's Alice / 2: Alice Madness Returns), I can highly recommend both games. Although the first part is a bit aged now (released in 2000). But Alice Madness Returns was phenomenal. The music, the level design, the characters.
American McGee's Alice and this, the sequel, are among my absolute favorite adaptations/interpretations of Alice in Wonderland ever. The visuals, the storytelling, the delving into madness, paranoia, and various other mental instabilities, all wonderful. Another great choice!👍😁
This is American McGee's Alice. The first game had Alice have to deal with the trauma of accidentally burning down her house one night with her parents inside. This game is her as a teenager, a few months away from getting kicked out of an orphanage for being too old. She's is seeing a shrink. He is NOT helping. McGee has a third game he's working on, but god only knows when he finishes it, as he likes to scrap the whole thing and start over on a whim. They're good games, 8/10ish. But both came out at the same time as 9/10's so no one bought them, except people who follow the artists rather than the series.
Your right. The doctor is trying to manipulate her in someway, without many spoilers, her family died when the housed was burned. And the doctor knows who did it and is trying to make her forget the pass, and go to wonderland, which is kind of her subconcience. Wonderland keeps going darker and darker as you progress in the game, and sometimes you wonder if she is losing her mind in the process. I certantly did at some point, and the ending has a good plottwist
Alice Asylum is a sequel. There might be also a Tv show though it's not confirmed. So far the series include, excluding Asylum: - American McGee's Alice (2001) - Alice Madness Returns (2013) - Alice Otherlands (2014) Correct me if I'm wrong!
American McGee is currently raising funds to make a pitch and demo that he can show to a Publisher and get the millions to make the last of the trilogy. I hope he achieves it.
Madness returns has an awesome story I’d definitely recommend y’all watch the cutscenes/movie or if you’d rather a shorter summery superhorrorbro has a really good story explained video. Ether would be great for Halloween imo
This game was awesome! Played it in 2021. A really cool fact, Roger L. Jackson, who voiced the Cheshire Cat, is the voice of Ghostface from the Scream movies and Mojo Jojo from PowerPuff Girls!
@@TarhosTheKnight Well.. Alice Asylum was becoming a thing..but then EA killed it. But since Fromsoftware will take "Wizard of Oz" for there next instolement..maybe "Alice" as a setting still have a chance.
The second-last one is actually the opening sequence to the game. The trailer before it, and after it, give truer senses of what the game is like. American is currently working with his community on the third game, _Alice Asylum_ , which is something of a prequel sequel. The story will be of Alice getting to the place, mentally, where she can start to put herself back together. As it will fill out her time at the asylum, it takes place before _American McGee's Alice_ , but the concepts being hashed out are further steps on the stuff players liked from both games. For example, we talked about different dresses, and how they could have different abilities, as well as on and off states for some of them. Equipping different dresses could lead to different types of gameplay in each section, except where stealth was required. Things like that. BTW, Spicy Horse was the company in China that helped to develop the _Alice_ games, but since it's no longer around, and EA holds the license, American needs to work with them to get the third game made.
Man this game is loads of shocking factor of this format of Alice in Wonderland is twisted and fun to play. As I played the game during college as a brother figure let me try it and I had fun. 😄 Also there is a sequel in the works as the creator showing on his page some interesting things to come.
Apparently the thing that people were raving about when this game first came out was Alice's hair physics. Things were certainly simpler back then. Such a fun game.
I love the arc words in those first few trailers, "what have you done?". From what I recall they don't actually appear in the game itself (at least not as significantly as in the trailers), but they are SO incredibly important to the theme of the game and to Alice's character development through it. One of my favorite games ever, despite its shortcomings.
Honestly, I think it definitely is worth a watch for the cutscenes, or just actually playing the game. It is an interesting take on how Alice's mindset affects Wonderland, and vice versa.
Definitely a great game. I absolutely loved it. Alice: Madness Returns is a sequel to American McGee's Alice. American McGee is the director and designer on both games. He's been begging, Warner Brothers I think is who has the rights, for a third game in the series for years. American McGee's Alice came out in 2000. They wanted to make a movie adaptation of it but that fell through. So talks started about making a sequel around 2009. And Alice: Madness Returns came out in 2011. I remember there was a big....I don't know the word for what I'm looking for .... people were massively impressed not just by the game but by Alice's hair effects too. Playing American McGee's Alice is not necessarily needed to understand the story of Madness Returns, because it's kind of a direct sequel. The story is carried on.... I'd say almost immediately and it's referenced enough to pick up what it was about, but it would flesh it out a bit. A next game would be nice, I'd definitely love that, but I'd say if a new game isn't coming out Madness Returns is a good ending for the story. Both games are on PS3 and Xbox 360.
I have this game and beaten it so many times. I never tire of how beautiful and amazing this game is on its own unique twist of how the world functions in her mind. It's definitely hidden gem and I'm so glad I got my hands on it. The only thing is needing to play the original game. I definitely recommend anyone that likes this kind of thing to try it out if you can find it. :D
You guys better also check the trailers to the original American McGee's Alice plus the opening intro from 2001. Also imho the trailers are more scary than the game imho.
Okay I won't spoil the story with the doctor but I can tell you that this is a sequal to American Mcgee's Alice which is itself a sequal to the original Alice stories, and I would highly recommend you look into the stories of both games.
Good on Bethany for catching the Doc thing. As for the game's 1.American McGee Alice Then sequel 2.Alice madness returns Then a prequel to American McGee Alice is currently stuck in the concept phase as they need EA or someone to back it. Currently it's title is Alice Asylum. Also a show may be in the works.
Yeah I have CPTSD and this game triggered me so damn hard. I've also had a few friends say it was really helpful when dealing with their trauma so as always experience is not universal lol. But my God is it powerful.
This is one of my favorite games! The world is fantastic and way more detailed and beautiful and it all tells a story way more than most AAA games you see today. It is a fantastic game and i recommend it to anyone if you’ve never played it. Combat is solid as well.
I used to have a screensaver that was the Cheshire cat from the original and my mom came home from work while I was out she went to my room to ask what I wanted to chow and poked her head into my dark room just in time to see the Cheshire cat's eyes and bloodstained teeth disappear from view.I could hear her shriek in terror from the driveway while I was coming in from the shop😂🤣
My girlfriend at the time got this for the 360 and loved it, and I got sucked into it watching her play until I finally started my own game. It was a lot of fun and had some really challenging puzzles. I would definitely recommend giving it a try
Honestly the ads are WAY overproduced and of a time when LoOK hOw waCkY AnD EdGy wE aM was the advertising norm. Both games literally advanced the norm of what both a CRPG and an open world platformer could be and the stories at the heart of each are pretty damn powerful.
Omgggg a blast from the past! I remember playing the OG & playing this sequel on my PlayStation! It’s TRULY one of my favorites! Love the story, the designs, & overall the aesthetic! American Mcgee’s Alice is one of my favorite renditions of Alice In Wonderland. Such an underrated gem! I hope you guys check out the story cutscenes or play the game!🔥💕
American McGee's Alice in Wonderland and Alice: Madness Returns are gems of gaming history. Also great examles of how fucked EA licensing deals used to be...
It’s a shame many don’t realize this is a sequel. Then again they were released a decade apart from each other. We really need the crowdfunding effort for the third one to go through successfully.
I absolutely love this game! So much madness in this game, I would say once you have the time definitely give it ago and if you have a Xbox it's free on gamepass
I have to say, I remember seeing teaser for this game, years ago....but it wasn't included in this mix, nor can I find it on youtube. its a great game I recommend it
If you guys get a chance please play the game and stream it. It would be very cool to see your reaction to the story. The story is amazing and plays off the original Alice in wonderland but adds a tragic twist to it. Interesting enough this is a sequel to the pc game called Alice Mcgee. Also it's on sale on steam for anyone that plays steam games on pc.
Hey yall its me one of your many fans i just need to say that bayonetta should be. Available to play tomorrow if you guys are still interested in the videogames series.
Yeeaay! I was waiting for your reaction to this masterpiece! I'm so happy! You guys reactead to all of my favorite games already! I'll keep acompaning the channel. (Also, have you considered react to some content of Sonic? The cutscnes are really well done, and some trailers are really cool. I've been looking for some reaction of the intro and cutscenes of the game Shadow the Hedgehog, and even if it's a game that divides the community of Sonic, I think it's so f*cking awesome, lot's of guns and destruction! Would love to see you guys cheking out). Love all of your reactions, keep doing the great work! And Madness Returns worth every second, so worth playing it.
I have played both games the first was kind of annoying gameplay wise but the story was interesting the second was great both gameplay and story as you progress you really start to wonder what happened to Alice the levels are interesting as well there are some levels that actually put you at ease when going through them
Thank you! I was waiting for this reaction! This game is a masterpiece - the story, visuals and the soundtrack - just impeccable. It's a different and darker take on the story that we're so familiar with and honestly, I really recommend checking out the cutscenes as well - trust the fans, you will not be disappointed^^
