As part of Sessions, a new spin-off of Gagosian Premieres, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Alice Smith delivers an unforgettable interpretation of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic “I Put a Spell on You” (1956) inside the exhibition "Social Works II" at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London. Hawkins’s song was famously covered by Nina Simone in 1965 and has since been performed and recorded by many other artists, from Bette Midler to Marilyn Manson. In 2015, Smith’s haunting rendition was featured on the album "Nina Revisited... A Tribute to Nina Simone".

When I first heard her Sing this song, I swear 6’7! 250lbs of me levitated off the ground! This is the closest I’ve heard the spirit of the song be matched especially in contrast to the Bette Midler sexy, voodoo and kinda coy versions people do.

Her voice makes me time travel...places me in fields of beautiful flowers, running at a slow cinematic pace, the wind blowing through my hair as majestic birds take flight. She's the breeze coming through farmhouse windows, rocking the chair unseated, while she sings on the Victrola. AMAZINGLY DIVINE.

I am so glad to see this version getting the support and admiration it deserves. I heard this years ago and it knocked my d in the dirt. I then showed it to anyone who would listen, and I had a few people say it was boring. I don't recall what happened after that because I tuned anything that came out, they mouth right on out. What I love is how both Nina and Alice sang the same song but provoked different emotions from each set. For example.. NINA..when she sings it I get the vibe of confident “you’re my B***” I don’t have to do much for you to be trapped whereas ALICE..when she sings it gives me the vibe of ..even though I put a spell on you I’m the one in a trance or even if you don’t want me you’ll want me ; I’m yours anyhow. it gives raw, powerful emotion, vulnerability
