While the Landcruiser's getting a much needed wheel alignment, we check out some tourist attractions in Alice Springs - starting with the Reptile Centre. But we go in search of something a little more radio related and the choice is obvious - School Of The Air. After that we go and check out the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum - but is Alf Traeger's legacy and major contribution to outback living really being remembered?

Brings back memories of installing big, bulky 100w Allied brand (I think that was the brand name anyway) that hf transceivers in company vehicles back in the early days of my trade, my how things have changed. I cut my teeth installing Presley FM sets in company vehicles also and spent lots of time getting the SWR right on these units as it was really easy to blow them up.

100W on VHF certainly sounds like quite a bit, and I can see why the radio wouldn't like a SWR mismatch... are we talking low band VHF or high band?

@@DropTableAdventures I am a automotive electrician and not much of a radio tech, I did my apprenticeship with a guy who used to like to try and talk around the world on 2 watts on skip, like most radio tec people very smart but not someone you want to talk to at a party. Sorry I meant HF, not VHF (Dam AutoCorrect). I think the frequency that they used started with a 10 something, the units had about five frequencies, including the flying Doctors, this was over 26 years ago so the memory isn’t that clear. I was doing work for expiration companies at the time installing there 2way gear. They used a manual tuning aerial where you shifted the banana plug lead to different points on a blue fibreglass aerial. The Presley units were 30w fm Private frequencies an were used for transmitting on site and were very easy to blow up if the aerial was not correctly tuned, ask me how I know LOL

@3:15 you say "HF radio has been part of the Outback pretty much since it was invented". That's pretty impressive, especially considering how long ago the Outback was invented! ;) An interesting episode, the multi-coloured labels on the radio particularly sparked my curiosity as a genuinely fascinating piece of UI design. I'm guessing they worked well. And that crocodile in the water was quite a scene! It's cool that they had glass sides so you could see the pose.

Ahh ambiguous subject sentences, how great they are... The glass sided enclosure for the crocodile is good, but I just feel like it'd be nicer if it was a little less plain and a bit bigger.
