It is astonishing how she manages that her crystal clear way of playing, so suitable for other classical styles and “a priori” lacking in power in this piece, it is used here in such a dry way, with little pedal, that matches perfectly with the flamenco and cante jondo style, dry and harsh. And then to contrast and balance the whole piece, she throws that coda in a Frenchy style, much faster with lots of pedal, like a rising burning flame, stretching the end to create such an intensity. And plenty of magical moments, like those chords of the coda written “laissez vibrer” that she plays like gongs. Maybe not even Falla could imagine that sound could come out of the piano. Truly a performance for the ages!

So wonderfully said. For me, who, I admit, I discovered Alicia de Larrocha very recently, she is THE pianist of all time. In all the recordings I have heard from her, she is exceptional, and exceptional to a point where I don't know who can match her. I am 76 years old, I am a classical guitarist, but I am a great lover of very different music. From classical music, to Indian classical music, through African music, through Chinese or Korean music like Pansori songs etc... When I listen to this immense pianist, I am simply amazed by her intelligence and her understanding of what we call "music". She is in the very intimacy of this sound world, she feels every little cell of it, and she offers us, through this instrument that she has totally conquered and transcended, all its magical and powerful possibilities. I am deeply touched by every recording I hear from her. One have to listen her play this sonata in B flat D960 from Schubert, truly breathtaking in its accuracy and grandeur, as in Granados and the "Escenas romásticas", as in so many others. Even if it is posthumous, I owe her a deep and eternal gratitude for all the beauty of what she gave me by listening to her.

I obtained a score of this piece yesterday and attempted to sight read it (quite unsuccessfully)…this music truly requires the coordination of an acrobat (like that required for Iberia and Goyescas)…I think it’s why she excelled in this kind of music (and whatever else she played)…and I think her tiny hands were more of an asset than a hindrance in her career…my admiration for this artist continues over 30 years since I first heard her in recital.

The only time I heard Mme de Larrocha in person she played this work, after pieces by Soler and the rather rarely played Sonata in E minor op. 7 by Grieg. This was in the small town of Larvik on the Norwegian Skagerrak coast, for just a handful of people, who were lucky to receive an unforgettable musical experience. Thanks for refreshing this great memory!

@@lisilisin Thank you for reminding me. I drove down from Oslo, just a 2 hours' drive. Imagine, this is close to thirty years ago, she was then 70. The Grieg sonata is an early work and perhaps a little under-valued, but I think your mother loved to play it, especially in the cpmposer's native land.

She really was one of the best pianists I ever heard. The way when playing a lot of notes with her right hand, and suddenly grasping a lower note with her thumb is amazing. She really excelled in the Spanish piano music, and performed these works throughout the world. As far as I know she recorded both Iberia as well as Goyescas four times.

Yes, you're right. She recorded 4 times, both, Iberia by I: Albéniz, and Goyescas by E. Granados.-

Para mí, que lo admito, descubrí a Alicia de Larrocha hace muy poco, ella es LA pianista de todos los tiempos. En todas las grabaciones que he escuchado de ella, ella es excepcional, y excepcional hasta el punto que no sé quién puede igualarla. Tengo 76 años, soy guitarrista clásico, pero soy un gran amante de músicas muy diferentes. Desde la música clásica, pasando por la música clásica del india, pasando por la música africana, pasando por la música china o coreana como las canciones Pansori etc... Cuando escucho a esta inmensa pianista, simplemente me asombra su inteligencia y su comprensión de lo que llamamos "música". . Ella está en la intimidad misma de este mundo sonoro, siente cada pequeña célula de él y nos ofrece, a través de este instrumento que ha conquistado y trascendido totalmente, todas sus mágicas y poderosas posibilidades. Me conmueve profundamente cada grabación que escucho de ella. Hay que escucharla tocar esta sonata en si bemol D960 de Schubert, realmente impresionante por su precisión y grandeza, como en Granados y las "Escenas románticas", como en tantas otras. Aunque sea póstumo, le debo un profundo y eterno agradecimiento por toda la belleza que me dio al escucharla.

En ese recital también interpretó las escenas románticas de Granados, la sonata en mi menor de Grieg y la sonata de Esplá , hace muy poco lo vi en Sevilla en la Fundación Caixa Forum .Memorable !!!!!! Ojala sigan subiendo aquí el resto del recital, sería un regalo invalorable !!!!!!!!

She played this incredibly difficult piece quite a lot in her recitals…surely there must be a live recording somewhere that has better sound…for a professionally recorded video of a concert performance, the sound is really bad…it detracts from her otherwise fabulous playing…

Todas las grabaciones de Alicia de LaRocha tienen un sonido mucho mejor de lo que se oía en vivo cuando ella tocaba..... no puedo evitar pensar que fué modificado/mejorado. All recordings of Alicia de LaRocha have a much better sound that what one heard live at the concert halls when she performed, I cannot help but wonder if he was modified/improved.....

Hola... Siento verdadera curiosidad por lo que usted atestigua. Me parece, a priori, muy interesante. ¿Podría ser, por favor, algo más explícito? Por edad, nunca escuché a esta pianista en vivo. ¿Cómo "sonaba" de verdad, cómo era su sonido y su manera de tocar; y qué impresión causaba en el oyente? Infiero de sus palabras que, tal vez, era su sonido algo escaso y pobre... Gracias de antemano. Saludos.

@@gabrielgabriel8096 Mis palabras reflejan mi opinion en un foro público...., y es algo que puede variar de persona a persona. Las veces que oí a LaRocha en vivo su sonido fué pequeño y seco, con relación a sus grabaciones, suenan con una reverberación que no la experimenté en vivo.

@@Cubanbearnyc muchas gracias por responderme y por su testimonio... Siempre tuve esa misma sensación. Que sonaba demasiado "perfecta" en disco..., como para resultar impactante en una sala de conciertos. Dicho de otro modo, un sonido y manera de tocar ideales para la sala de grabación, pero insuficientes para el "vivo", que es donde se diferencian los verdaderos grandes del piano. Gracias de nuevo por sus palabras y por corroborarme lo que ya, de algún modo, intuía.

Es una lástima que solo tengas en cuenta la opinión de una sola persona y ya te convenza. La mayoría de gente que pudo escuchar a Alicia de Larrocha en vivo, opina muy diferente. Muchas de las grabaciones en vivo que están en RU-vid, están grabadas desde el público, con un micrófono escondido y por lo tanto no deberías valorar el sonido, sino la interpretación. El sonido real no está ni en estas grabaciones a las que me refiero, ni en este vídeo que es una retransmisión antigua que se hizo por televisión, ni en los discos (ni de ella, ni de nadie), sólo lo escucharon el público que estuvieron en sus conciertos, y te puedo asegurar que no era ni escaso, ni pobre. Cubanbearnyc tiene siempre una opinión negativa sobre AdL. Está claro que no le gustaba... pero es sólo su opinión, no la de la mayoría de gente. Busca más opiniones, artículos, críticas...

@@gabrielgabriel8096y cuáles son los verdaderos grandes del piano según tú. Ah claro ! Se me olvidaba que para los cubanos no hay otros como ellos en todo , siempre críticones, salen de la isla porque su vida ahí no les gusta, a pesar de que ahí estudiaron , aprendieron y se hicieron grandes intérpretes , ni quién lo niegue . Una vez afuera nada del exterior les parece, ni la comida , ni la forma de vida y mucho menos algo que tenga que ver con la música, nadie toca como ellos, arrogantes hasta la médula y siempre viendo cómo le hacen para quitarles el trabajo a otros músicos, aunque sean sus paisanos , así que no puede esperarse otra opinión de un ente así . Alicia fue y siempre será grande entre las grandes a pesar de tus comentarios groseros .
