Song reminds me of when I was getting out of rehab for drugs and alcohol. Putting those insane and dark days behind. Had so much to look forward to and to this day ive stayed clean and sober. So I think what a lot of people don’t realize is that the beginning is meant to be what would have happened back in the 50s. Instead of going to be with him, she sends her brother/father out to send him away because things are too scary for them. However, the end of the video is in full color and he’s driving a different truck than the one seen at the start. In present day, while things are still scary for them, she goes out to be with him. She doesn’t send someone else to send him away, she embraces their feelings for each other. It’s actually really heartbreaking when you think about it.

I had a different view of this video. Back then and even before then, black women were "taken advantage" of by white men. Her brother knew why he was there and wanted to stop it before it started because when she saw them fighting she knew why he was there also. And through each era of time, they still had the same attraction and obstacles. It's a very poignant video and still one of my favorites.

Actually, I don't think the same. It feels like, even though times are different, more acceptance, it still is very difficult. It seems that on the "modern" part, she can even go against her mom and brother, and goes for it... but... she stops... and then Alicia withdraws her hand and looks down, giving the feeling that even though "she's ready"... she still can't/won't do it. Amazing song and video, amazing Alicia as always.

And totally unrealistic. White guys did not pursue black women. And most certainly wouldn't squabble for their feelings towards them. And the consequences of beating up a white dude in that era... Especially over interracial dating... Most likely would end up with a black person dying or in prison at the very least. I love Alicia Keys, but this video is wack.

Once we went into this one store and he asked if i'd been in there. I was getting ready to say no when he was like,"I know its a really white store (bass pro shop)." I was like,"its a hunting store. I don't hunt." Then I remember coming across some really evil, racist shit, and for the first time in my life I thought that white people couldn't be forgiven. Were they all the same? It was the worst feeling in the world. I immediately wanted to run to his job and just hold him. This video is just so much.
