A3 is a classic in it's own way. Alien is a horror movie in Ridley Scott style, Aliens an action movie in James Cameron style and Alien 3 is a dark stoic movie in David Fincher style.

Movies of this era are right in the sweet spot of practical effects. CGI wasn’t very good yet so movies like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Alien 3 went all out with practical effects and it was a thing to behold. Movies these days are so full of CGI that it’s like watching a cartoon.

Sigourney arguably gives her strongest performance in Alien 3. She's always been amazing in this role but here, she brings so much tragedy to it. Ripley has lost everything because of her encounters with the aliens. She lost her daughter, her crew, her Marine comrades, Newt, Hicks. And to add one final blow, her worse fear has happened. An alien is in her chest. And it's a queen. Her constant nightmares in Aliens are now a reality. She's so exhausted and now doomed. But she still fights to her very last breath to make sure every single Alien is destroyed. As bleak and tragic as Ripley's story is, she still remained one of the best film heroes in history. I know most Alien fans hate part 3. And that's understandable. But I love it. Mostly because of Sigourney and what a powerful actress she is.

The Director's cut of Alien 3 really elevates it to a fairly decent movie in my opinion, much better than the disappointing theatrical release. My biggest problem with this film though is the killing off of Hicks and Newt, particularly after what they went through in the previous film. I recommend reading the Dark Horse comic book version of William Gibson's script for Alien 3, which shows what could have been.

I was around 30 when Alien came out. I stupidly refused to see it based on the tagline "In space, nobody can hear you scream.". When Aliens came out a local art house flea pit had the two as a double header and I thought "why not". Holy sh!t. I couldn't see how A3 could exist after the ending of Aliens but I gave it a go. I was outraged that two seriously important characters were killed off and convinced myself that I hated it. Years later it bobbed up in my Quickflix offerings ( QF was an Australian version of the Netflix posted DVD model ) so I looked again. Without the shock of the deaths of Hicks and Newt to contend with I was able to watch it objectively. Nothing will ever beat Alien in this franchise for me, but I'd rate A3 as nearly alongside Aliens. As David above says, there are three distinct directorial styles here, and each can stand alone, each movie is watchable in its own right. Just don't get me started on Resurrection. The invulnerable and very sexy Ripley aside, it is horrible.

If it was possible to view A3 as a stand alone movie, get it out of the shadow of Alien, then I think it would be seen very differently. It's actually really good, with some standout performances. It's nice to have preconceptions challenged. Alien 3 is a far more complex movie than I first thought, and deserves to be given a second chance by those who dismiss it.

It took years, but I eventually made my peace with the film. As a stand alone story it's actually kind of great; as the conclusion to Ellen Ripley's story--a character I've always loved and admired--it's awful. I can appreciate the cinematography, the production and of course the performances: Sigourney Weaver is great as ever, but Charles S. Dutton really struck a chord with me too. All of these excellent things are there, and yet I think the problem still is the core narrative. It's a weird experience to enjoy everything about a movie except for its story.

Absolutely EVERYTHING you said in this video is TRUE! Like you, this was the very first movie I watched in the franchise, so as a youngster I was in awe, all be it somewhat intimidated by the alien, the chase scene in particular….BUT now, I’m more mature (mentally) and can appreciate this movie EVEN more…from the score which I can listen to on repeat (sadly underrated, if you ask me), then the delights of the alien quadrilogy with bonus features, directors cut, etc and then RU-vid too where the likes of a such a dedicated fan, who has analysed and provided information/scenes, etc which was not available (once upon a time) so to see this “new” option/POV just solidifies the reason (to me) why alien 3 is, indeed a gem but sadly people will be hypercritical on the effects or the issues from the studio has overshadowed/blinded people to just how good, this film is. The end ALWAYS gets me…the somber tone of music and the voiceover from Ripley (probably a nod to the original film) and then seeing the prison being locked down…permanently by the company and the remains of Ripley’s memory, legacy and her story…is just swept under the rug…maybe I’m overlooking it, it’s somewhat fitting, as if the company WANTS to erase the facts and by that, what Ripley went through….

Generally on a broad thematic level I view the first film as "Birth" the second film as "Life" and the third film as "Death". The various themes in each revolve around these general ideas. Alien is about creation of life, discovery and mystery all the messy parts there in. Aliens getting on with life and the job, family, the battles fought. Alien 3 regards religion, loss of family and retirement and how will we be remembered. Alien 3 has a great soundtrack as well. People who get invested in characters so much that they dislike A3 must hate shows like Game of Thrones.

There's a parallel universe where Alien³ was the FIRST, original movie, and then Alien and Aliens were the two post-release prequels that blew up to phenominal proportions. Having been on some Xeno-Zip, I've been watching all the movies now available (with Romulus being the main catalyst for this), and for me, Alien³ will always be that tragic farewell to a beloved cast of characters who EARNED their happy ending and then got it brutally snatched away via a Deus Ex Machine, bullshit asspull of the egg being on the Sulaco (don't even...). But in the film series (comics excluded), it's fucking canon. I mean, it literally throws the bittersweet ending of Aliens under the bus, then MUDA MUDAs the bus into it. Its the one part of the series I hate watching, but once you get past the tragic beginning, you begin to roll with the finale as it's presented, now invested to see how this whole shitshow is gonna play out. And it's a genuinely sad conclusion to an otherwise amazing trilogy. Now, you can always jump off at Aliens, disregarding Alien³ entirely. With the Development Hell it went through, it's entirely fair to assume that Alien³ would've been radical as hell had certain parties not royally jacked it up. BUT, at least we got E. Ripley back in Alien Reaurrection, and Sigourney Weaver reprised her role, hundreds of years later, and part Xeno herself. Resurrection is a fun horror romp to enjoy after the tragedy of part 3, so why not enjoy it?

I can appreciate Alien 3 as being opposite, no guns, no hope, total doom and dismay but the heroics are there and are fantastic. How bad ass do you have to be to go into a fight with the greatest killing machine armed with scissors.

I've noticed an interesting thing while reviewing Alien Blackout. That mobile game, despite being almost hated by the fans, it's an interesting chapter of the saga. Basically we know that Amanda Ripley, after the events of Sevastopol, was saved by a team that brought her to Mendelev Station. Now, if you look at the map, Mendelev Station occupy an interesting place in the map. To be precise, system HIP 51317, is closely located to the system of "Fiori 16" where exist the penal colony of Fiorina 161. Another interesting location nearby is the same Anchorpoint station in GJ2066 system. Just 4 grids to the left. Both these two systems have something to do with Alien 3. The movie depiction or the novel depiction.

I've always been a fan of A3. While I can understand some of the criticisms of the film, it is most definitely a product of its time, and I feel the good far outweighs the bad. Some of the dialog from the prisoners alone crack me up to this day and I will never get tired of watching even the theatrical version. I haven't liked a Alien movie since this one.

Alien3 used to be very confusing to me, back in the 90s, and then the Assembly Cut came around, and everything clicked. Suddenly, the movie made sense, and more than that, it made for FANTASTIC drama, arguably (IMHO) the best Alien film since the original! I love Golic and Dillon and Clemens (and Ripley, of course), and all the other misfits, and the desperation of Alien3... and, I know this is blasphemy, but... True-Bishop is quite possibly Henriksen's best work, ever! By my reckoning, the ranking goes: Alien Alien3 Aliens Alien:Covenant Prometheus And...the whatnots

I met Paul McGann (Golic) at a con yesterday, and I said I’m sorry FOX messed up Alien 3, and he said “Oh yeah they messed Fincher around, but he had the last laugh though - he’s David Fincher!” He also went onto to say he’s never seen the film, but heard about the Assembly Cut, and the chances of Fincher reclaiming it and doing his own cut were probably zero.

I love Alien 3 as a film! Everything about it is good, the cast are magnificent and the xeno is more fercious than ever! The only down-side is, when I saw it in the cinema when released, after loving Alien and then Aliens - it's a monumental disappointment, due to the killing off of Hicks and Newt and we won't mention that egg, miraculously stuck to the bulkhead of the Sulaco... but the story is strong enough to make it work and 30 years later, I do like it for it's different feel and flavour - all of it's own!

I love Alien³ I saw the first two and when I was a kid I had an incredible emotion reaction to the opening. I find Ripley to be my favorite. I love the assembly cut far more. The Alien itself is incredible and new. The soundtrack is top of the line. Honestly Jon Landeau is the reason why Fincher left that set. He is a big Hollywood producer, pandering to an audience. What Alien³ has is a rebellious indie director (at the time) and a cliche Hollywood producer trying to capitalize on Aliens. I wish David had free reign. I wish David would be so celebrated on the project that we got an updated special effects version

I remember seeing this in theaters as a teenager and loving it and I still do. It's my favorite of the franchise. If I could change one thing it would be to return the prisoners back to monks. It's hard, nigh impossible to root for a murdering rapist, even when played but such great actors as Charles Dutton and Charles Dance. But a holy order up against an alien with nothing but their faith and wits? Much easier to root for. But it's the redemption the movie reaches for that hits home for me. Glad to hear it's finally getting its flowers!

The biggest problem with _Alien 3_ - in my mind - is the fact that it kills off Newt, Hicks, and Bishop and renders all the character development of _Aliens_ somewhat pointless. If _Alien 3_ had been set years later, if Ripley’s impregnation and arrival on Fury 161 had come about in a different way, then I think that the good parts of the movie (i.e. most of it) would have shone much brighter.

As a huge Alien/Aliens fan I was ecstatic when I was made an offer to work on the Snes version of Alien 3. This was while the movie was in early production. I knew nothing about it. I remember the excitement when I received the wip script. That excitement popped in the first couple of pages. By the end I was totally deflated. I thought, what do I know about scripts, maybe the magic will be on the screen. 6 months later at an early preview show the magic failed to materialize. My programmer partner and I decided to largely ignore what we saw and make our own game but with the film’s visuals. This is being harsh on the movie that certainly has it moments but fails in the context of the trilogy.

As I've gotten older, I've found new things to not just like but love about Alien³. It's a flawed film, no doubt, but what should be taken into consideration is what was being attempted instead of grousing about what we ultimately got.

Being traumatized by watching A, W, In London as a kid, kept me tuned up with fear regards attempting to watch Alien. I made it through, just about. Aliens, what a ball. Alien 3, what a conclusion. How to out do the grim desperate isolation of the first two films,,?, Alien 3. I see it as a commitment to the narrative ark, which is heartwarming nowadays and ofcourse carries 1000's of % more authenticity than any of that AvP shite. For it's shear balls to be so unrelentingly grim (the place, the premise of the place, the people, the men, the already "bad" men), how utterly lost that whole sketch is already,. Then she comes and brings the space beast,,, which also becomes the window to redemption ,, redemption through sacrifice. I love that A3 is packed full of English actors too. "WILL SOMEBODY GET THIS HISTERIC WOMAN OUT OF HERE!!". Alien,,, "chomp," . I just took out your leader bro

I watched Alien 3 on its release in 92 and was absolutely gutted when i left the Cinema. I hated it! It really was a downer that Newt and Hicks were dead after all they'd been through. However the more I watched it over the years, the more I appreciated it. In fact I now consider it the last great Alien movie because everything we've had since has been poor. Despite how many criticize Alien 3 not being consistent with Aliens, I personally found it quite enjoyable. The interactions between Riley with the rest of the prisoners was great, it gives us the chance to know more about how Riley feels about her encounter with the Xenomorph. Watching how the prisoners come together is also entertaining, the chasing at the end was very intense for the young me lol In short, Alien 3 is good on its own. You can really compare it with the Thriller and the massive fight from Alien and Aliens, it was just different~

I actually like Alien 3. I would say it's a three out of five star movie. The lines from Dillon and Ripley where they were trying to convince the other prisoners to fight the monster are some of my favorite lines of all time. Nice little video. When I first saw Alien 3 I did not like it but over the years it has grown on me. My biggest complaint about the Alien franchise and other franchises such as Star Wars, Terminator and such is the constant need for the original hero or heroin. Example Ripley's character, after Aliens that should have been it. There are many more characters in that universe than Ripley. Hell just go by the comics. The same can be said for Star Wars when it comes to Luke and Han Solo and the thousands of other characters that can be used to tell a story. John Connor and Sarah Connor from Terminator granted are the main characters but there are other sub characters that could create a new story arc. I think constantly using the same hero such as Ripley diminished the emotional attachment that movie goers had and the desire they had to see something new.

Okay. This movie was A Lot for me. I was in diapers when the first movie came out, and 11 when Aliens debuted. I first saw Aliens about a year later when it hit VHS, and I was mesmerized by both the horror and action aspects, and eventually pestered my mother into letting me watch Alien a few months later. After getting that invested in the characters of not only Ellen Ripley, but also Newt and Cpl. Hicks, I was absolutely GUTTED that they were unceremoniously written out of the franchise almost as an afterthought. Like "oh, yeah, these characters existed, but now they don't, sorry bout that." Like, these were Ripley's de facto family and now they're just gone. Not cool, bruh. But, I gave Alien 3 another watch and tried to evaluate it beyond the donkey kick to the nards. I was taken aback rather a lot by the whole Ripley seduces the doctor side story that was WAY out of character. Like, even though there was an obvious attraction between Ripley and Hicks, there were no obvious moves towards an intimate relationship between the two, ostensibly due to the stressful emergency of the situation. Yet, in Alien 3, the same situation is present, yet Ripley is practically flinging herself at this man, because she hasn't had sex in almost 60 years? Nah, bruh. But, I gave it another watch, hoping to find something worthy in all the mess, also after reading a few articles about hidden allegories within the story, and I grudgingly found some merit in the story, and came to appreciate some aspects of the film. I do like the dark, gritty feel to the film. It suits the setting as well as the (ultimately false) finality of the trilogy. I like how Ripley (who was a Warrant Officer in the first 2 films but has suddenly been inexplicably promoted to Lieutenant?) has accepted and fully taken a command role in leading the fight against the xenomorph, and when faced with no other choice, knowing what was lurking within her, made the ultimate sacrifice to save humanity. This is a woman who has sacrificed so much already, and been so heavily traumatized by this thing that she felt there was no alternative, and it felt correct for the character. I always believe that practical effects will always supercede CGI, especially from the 90s, and the practical effects here were fantastic. The CGI is about as dated and cheesy as you'd expect. I guess, after much reflection, Alien 3 isn't as much of a dumpster fire as many would have you believe, but it could have been OH so much better. David Fincher is an amazing director (and The Game is an all-time favorite mind fuck movie) and if the studio had just fucked off and not dicked around with his vision so much I can only imagine what would have come out in the end. But part of me will never be able to forgive the inglorious send-off that Newt and Hicks received, so there will always be a bitter taste in my mouth because of that. There. I said it. I feel better.

Read the novel adaptation of the movie a few weeks prior to Alien 3 being released in the theaters. Alan Dean Foster's novel was based off from an earlier version of the script more closely related to what eventually became known as the "Assembly Cut". Great read, same depressing ending as the movie. Was a bit disappointed with how the series ended, but that changed a few few years later with the release of Resurrection. Complete garbage that film was. Made me appreciate Finchers work that much more. So glad the Assembly Cut made it to home release. The only way to truly appreciate the film imo.

I like alien 3. The movie works. Comparing it to other bad movies the plot, characters, writing, sets, story, all of it works really well. Most bad movies forget to have an ending or a climax or have characters who shouldn't exist. Aliens 3 is one of those bad movies that's really solid and it having bad reviews sort of baffles me. I imagine it's entirely because people feel betrayed by the two deaths at the start like in the last of us part 2 when the main character gets killed early. Red dawn and Postman are both good movies with bad reviews. same for water world. Some movies are broken and boring and have nothing to say, but some of them I think just lost the popularity contest for subjective reasons.

Alien 3 was also the first Alien movie I ever saw. Soon after, I watched the original Alien movie, and aside from the scene with the chestburster, which I still find oppressive, I couldn't really connect too much with it at first, and even found it to be rather boring in comparison. That has changed a lot over the years. However, my reluctant reaction towards Alien may also be due to that intense dark atmosphere of Alien 3 which I simply found more exciting and compelling. I'm also still drawn to it because of that. That prison is a very dark place to begin with, much more so than the Nostromo.

A3 is garbage. It brought very little to the overall canon of Alien and repeated much of the 1st film with more, utterly forgettable, characters. I still believe that the best direction for this series would be to have a movie regarding the colonists of LV426. How they signed up on Earth, traveled to LV426, setup shop, then fast forward to the inevitable collapse of the colony. You don't need Sigourney (no offense) and only Newt would be a recurring character, easily could find a little girl to play the part today. Everyone else would be entirely new.

For me Alien 3 was never that bad as other people might have seen it. When I first watched it I liked it. I didn't think that it was as good as Alien or Aliens, but I liked it anyway. It had it's own style, just like the first two movies, also it was good to continue Ripleys story. First I was disappointed that Newt and Hicks got killed of, but I accapted it after I realised that it maybe was necessary for the story itself and also for Ellen Ripleys story. Having lost everything again and having to watch as Newt being observed. I also love the ending and the special effects. Sure, the feeling after the movie was finished was different from the feeling I had after watching the first two. I thought that it was a good B-Class movie. When I watched Alien Resurrection later on, which I deeply hate, I accepted Alien 3 even more and came to like it even more.

It is a bit of a downer after Aliens (especially the set up), but as a stand-alone movie the Assembly cut is excelleYt for all the reasons covered here. The atmosphere and cinematography is off the charts, and the bleakness of the setting with the cast of double-X prisoners actually makes it feel like the true spiritual successor to the original Alien. I saw Alien 3 in the theater and wasn’t a huge fan at the time, but really enjoy it now as its own unique and compelling chapter in the series.
