Vai - better player than 99.99999999% of guitarists with just one hand. Not to mention his composition skills are insane and IMO severely underrated. The layers of harmony and rhythmic complexity he puts into a casual piece like this are well beyond what most mortals are capable of doing.

What a huge inspiration this video is, under so many angles... the positivity, the search for solutions, the conduct, the character - and in the end the one-hand song. This is so brilliant and so human at the same time. So glad this dude simply is who he is. Love you Steve

I find it very helpful to think about health. I have been a guitar player for more than 40 years! When I was 49 years old I started having serious back problems. I did a lot of research, went to doctors and found out that the best thing for my back was to do weight training and sit a lot less and stand a lot more. Since then I feel much better! Unfortunately, the gyms have been closed since November because of the pandemic (Germany). Therefore, I work out at home. I have a home studio. But there I stand at the computer and don't sit since then!

Great insights into grip strength. I think most of us play with our fretting hand far too hard. Way too much pressure. Been focusing on trying to relax the tension in my left hand, and use the minimal amount of pressure to play. It really does produce a more desirable effect, especially with legato. Tom Quayle has some good tips in that department, as well.

@claudevieaul1465 3 года назад
You're absolutely right, most players play too hard. Usually because we're using the wrong gauge strings ("thicker is better!!" #wrong). Ever tried a Chapman Stick?? You can't play too hard, as it won't sound good. Instead you tap, and discover a new range of dynamics in your hands and fingers! And the sound is still awesome. Apply that gentler touch to guitar, find the right string gauge to suit your new style, and there it is :) You're kinda recalibrating your senses and ears, and, ultimately, it's far easier on your hands too.

cause you practicing wrong, people are so dumb, they fell for that 12 hour workout bullshit that steve vai and others parroted, cant yall realized is a gimmick to sell guitar magazines back in the day? These people, Vai, Satriani, are super talented. they practiced a lot but not that many hours, even if they did, is impossible to make 100% progress in those hours and now you see the result of that. Vai has arthritis and carpal tunnel, Satriani is the same, his hands have issues and can't play as well as before. You can't speed up this shit. Its a journey, too many are obsessed with speed and think if i just sleep and eat practice, ill be a shredder, guess what, it may not happen, not everyone has what it takes, not everyone will be able to play fast, who plays guitar? is not the hands, is the brain. Some peoples brains are just better at these tasks. Its a hard pill to swallow because is out of your control, you can practice your ass off and never be a shredder like these guys. It is what it is.

Those youtube shredders you see on here, they're at the top of the search for a reason, they're talented and practiced a lot, same for Vai and other guitar gods. Practice is NOT enough to reach these levels of virtuosity. People are so dumb. If a 5'5 manlet practiced basketball all his life every waking hour will he be the next coby briant? lmao practice can only get you so far, it will make you better than what you are now but it won't overcome your limitations which are set by your brain and physical boundaries. You cant change your neurons, neural connections, and pathways, you cant change how your brain processes information to your hands, how fast it does, how accurate it does it. Practice will make you better up to a point to what your brain physical capabilities can handles. Man, this came out at such a good time for me. I was diagnosed with CTS in 2019 and while it did improve throughout 2020, I got carried away thinking it was completely gone and fucked my fretting hand up by playing like I used to be fore the diagnosis. Now I need surgery in a couple of weeks and I've been bummed beyond belief. But hey...Steve shines a light that we all can recover and things can be okay as long as we be more mindful of things like playing pressure, tension, posture, and the like.

Exactly you don't need pressure, particularly on a very good guitar, it just needs to make sound, that's how I play now after tennis elbow and also lowering the gauge helps, you can compensate with EQ, how you play and you'll see that a 009-042 doesn't really make that difference from 010-048, but you don't need to press that hard
