It's weird to think people rejected the dual stick controls so hard here, only to rave about them when Halo released a year later.

Whoever that reviewer is that complained about that control scheme, must feel so stupid now that it is a standard for FPS games and it works

This game is kinda underrated. I do feel bad for Jez San. It really affected him badly. That Dual Analog concept was brilliant. Fair play for using that Retro Gamer Issue. At least Argonaut bounced back with Rocksteady Studios and made the Batman Arkham series. Catwoman also had a terrible development too by the way thanks to Warner Brothers according to EA UK producers I spoke to. Great video Matt.

This game was ahead of it time with the controls

This is one of the few games that responds beautifully to overclocking in an emulator. It can run at a smooth 60fps, and then throw in high res, widescreen, and geometry correction, and it's literally a modern HD remaster.

I can't believe someone ELSE remembers that Conan O'Brien 'in the year 2000' bit... I felt like the rest of the world was gaslighting me about its existence.

I actually like this game, it had good scary atmosphere and pioneered modern FPS controls, so at least it achieved something in the end

Hearing the devs talk about the game being too easy and that they could clear it with a pistol reminds me of Civvie's thoughts on the subject: "Bullshit! Anyone who can beat this game using only the pistol has a predictive algorithm for a brain".

I didn't recognize this game until the box art came up. I remember seeing it at my local rental place so many times and just going "eh" because it was so generic looking, I never bothered to even look at the back of the box. This team could not catch a break, lol.

Just wanted to say that the ending to the Alien Resurrection movie is the most emotionally unsettling scene in the entire franchise

It's a shame because this actually looks really good graphically, but also kind of crazy that AvP actually hit first and that was the one I sunk lots of time into.

Honestly I think you should do the original Resurrection film as the behind the scenes sounds like an episode in itself.

It's so unreal hearing that the control scheme we all use today was regarded as horrible. And Halo claiming to have created that control scheme? Medal of Honor was using it in 1999 and MoH Underground in 2000. Over a year before Halo.

Man I loved this game and remember the terrible waiting and delays. Would have preferred the original 3rd Person design but I loved the deadly facehuggers. Also the sound design was visceral. Love the outro music from Alien3, I remember it being the perfect relaxation music after doing a playthrough on the Genesis.

My sister and I played Croc: Legend of the Gobbos on our PS1 back when we were in school... Ah, memories. As for Alien Resurrection: The Game, this thing might have had problems but is now becoming known as a masterpiece (for masochists looking for a challenge) and once you play it, the reality is that AR:VG is actually the best survival horror FPS on the PS1 alongside Alien Trilogy. You've heard the infamous GameSpot review, now play the game and revel in the ultimate in videogame masochism... Best played alongside Bethesda Softworks' Terminator Rampage.

I'm in vote of Google Stadia What Happun and the Amazon attempt at a MOBA game called Crucible What Happun.

I remember seeing screenshots of the early 3D version and being under the impression it would be a pre-rendered background, fixed camera-style, survival-horror game like Resident Evil. Would've been a cool way to take it.

Totally was not expecting to hear the theme to Ultraman Leo in an “Alien: Resurrection” video.

I loved this game growing up. I wish it had a few less facehuggers running around but other than that, solid movie/ horror game. I still have the cheat codes memorized. Pause, Circle Left Right Circle Up R2 for Cheats, and Square, Up, Down, Circle, Left, R1 for Research Mode.

Hearing Alien and freaking Croc of all things mentioned in the same sentence is bizarre.

Alien Resurrection is amazing looking in 4k on Duckstation. You can make the controls more tolerable too. Completely changes the game feel.

I hope that you can make a video about the cancellation of Maximo 3 which is the sequel to Maximo VS. The Army of Zin. I feel bad for Maximo because he's never going to see Sophia forever.

As a fan of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, I think that “Resurrection” is a bad “Alien” film but a good Jeunet film. It features several of his regular actors.

My favourite think about Wha Happun, is hearing about titles I had no clue ever released.

Loved the background music from the second (or fifth stage technically) of alien 3 for sega.

Poor Argonaut games just had a rough time with getting stuck with licensed games.

Showing so much footage of the Ripley avatar in the game really showed off the way they manage to convey how damp and unpleasant everyone looked in the movie. You can really smell it right through the screen.

I think we rented this back then and I remember I couldn't get through the start because it was too scary; the sound design and the creeping of the Xenos in that first level, man.

I'd like to see a What Happened video on Sakura Wars 5 So Long My Love. Mostly to let those outside the fandom see how much struggle SEGA went through to try and get it to the west, but could only get their 5th installment released when the PS2 was dying out and the Ps3 was barely out and about

The reviews criticizing the game's control scheme are hilarious in hindsight, considering that analogue stick setup has since become the THE standard control scheme for the vast majority of first and third person games that aren't twin-stick-shooters. Though I did start my gaming in the mid 90s, so I am familiar with how those games usually controlled at the time; usually the left stick was forward/back and turning left and right, and the right stick would be looking up and down and strafing/sidestepping. I think a lot of games that let you chose from different control schemes did have the now-modern setup as an option, but it wouldn't become the norm until a bit after Halo CE came out.

It's a funny thing to consider that Alien Resurrection on the PS1 is better at being a action-horror video game than the movie was at being a faithful sequel to the Alien films. As an aside, I always suspected that the game was supposed to allow all the playable characters to dual-wield pistols, as Ripley can collect a second pistol in the first level (but cannot use two at once, only Christie can later in the game) and the game has unlimited ammo for pistols, so collecting a second one has no ammunition value. But I suspect the developers decided to make dual-wielded pistols Christie's unique trait and took away the ability to dual wield from the other playable characters while forgetting to remove the second pistol in the first level. Dual-Wielded pistols are actually viable in the later level for Christie since you have double the fire rate and double the ammunition available to fire before needing to reload, allowing the weapon to take down a xenomorph pretty quickly while avoiding damage. Dual-wielded pistols and the support programmed in for the PlayStation Mouse allowing precise and accurate shooting, using that control scheme by the quality assurance testers, would likely explain the "Got good enough at the game to get through it with just the pistol" quote.

I loved this game back when I first played it. I had no issues with the control scheme, I found the game to be a great horror FPS.

This game is one of PS ONE best games. I remember playing it as a teenager and feeling completely immersed into the game. It was terrifying.

The most paralyzing element of this story to me is how the team reacted to the movie. That moment of realizing "oh crap, we're making a game based on THIS," I feel so sorry for them.

Crazy because theyve made some pretty great alien and predator and alien vs predator games in this time. I remember specifically an alien v predator game on the OG xbox where me and a couple friends were going to try to beat it in 1 night as either aliens or predators. Then one of us decided to just play as humans and he cheesed the game in a few hours. We both still hate that kid.

I rly like Alien Resurrection it's probably one of my favourite movies that I know is a bin fire but... it has a lot going for it: a great cast, a decent script, an AMAZING director and some really interesting themes about femininity, post humanism, identity, an action star who's a nearly 50 year old woman (when do you ever see that) and some really REALLY great scenes: the underwater scene, the basketball scene, the alien escape and the slow buildup with the pirate crew. Imo it's an underrated movie but it's living in the shadow of two of the best movies ever made. Even Alien 3 is ok when it comes down to it. I think the movie deserves less hate but that's just me lmao. Peace.

I... I like this game! I first played it in 2017 and it blew my mind! It looked great and it played great, it was like a moder-retro throwback but it wasn't because it came out close to the end of the PS1's lifecycle. It was unreal to see a game this good looking from a team that wasn't remembered for their technically great games, yet this game seemed to squeeze out every bit from the console. And the controls were amazing, I was surprised that they nailed the dual analog controls first and yeah, Halo took the glory, that was a bit of a gut-punch. This game deserved so much more praise! And I'm saying again, it's not rose-tinted nostalgia, I never played this game before 2017. BTW, I also like the movie, it's not great, but it's a good watch.

I don't think Halo takes credit for inventing Duel Analog control. It just takes credit for perfecting it. Which it kind of did.

So help me Dog, I actually like the movie a lot. What a cast, some of the coolest character actors around. And it had more of the feel of the weird French "Metal Hurlant" comics that inspired the first Alien.
