A playthough of Tengen's 1989 arcade action-adventure game for the NES, Alien Syndrome.
Played through as Mary.
Because, you know. Aliens.
Alien Syndrome began life as a Sega arcade game in 1987, and it was a popular top-down shooter that felt like mixture of Commando and Gauntlet but with a sci-fi horror slant. Each of the stages are open areas filled with weapons, hostages, and herds of bloodthirsty aliens.
There are fifteen hostages in each area, and though they are easy to find, getting to them is sometimes easier said than done. Several weapons can be found lying around and posted maps can easily direct you to your targets, but your character is super-flimsy. Ricky and Mary have no damage buffers - one hit is all it takes to go down, and those bosses will certainly teach you to play cautiously - there is no room for error in those fights, and a few slip-ups is all it takes to send you back to the title screen. It requires a fair bit of practice to see it through to the end.
The NES version's graphics and sound are hugely cut back from the arcade game's. They get the job done, though, and they do a very good job of it for a game from 1989, especially when you take into account that it's an unlicensed game. Then again, Atari was pretty solid when it came to NES releases, and Alien Syndrome is a good example of how the quality of their Tengen releases were usually right on par with many of the well-regarded, officially licensed NES titles.
I've been waiting for October to put this one up since it fits well with the Halloween vibe, so I hope you all enjoy it!

Alien Syndrome's mixing of elements from Gauntlet and Commando makes for a cool horror themed shooter, and Atari's NES port does thoroughly solid job of reproducing the Sega arcade classic.

Master System & Arcade versions are better.

@@Dorian_Scott Obviously the Arcade is better but the Master System port is trash, even Sega fanboys know that.

@@stephenmanuel9860 It has *EVERYTHING* to do with that! I genuinely think that the Master System version of Alien Syndrome is better than the NES one IMO. The graphics, music (even FM soundtrack), & gameplay are superior than the NES version. It is _especially_ outclassed by the Arcade version too!

This version actually trumps the Master System port since it plays more like the arcade original, including the multi-directional scrolling and the intact two-player simultaneous action.

I believe the company that converted sega games to the NES console was called Tengen they did others such as After Burner, Shinobi. Even the Cartridges look cooler. Tengen was an American company that made these converts.

It's basically the Zombies Ate My Neighbors gameplay loop, just a lot more basic. Atmosphere is still creepy, though. Never played this one as a kid, because if I had, I absolutely would've been drawing those aliens on my Trapper Keeper.

I remember renting this game from Blockbuster. My family and I were moving to a new house at the time. I had a sleepover at a friend's house and played this. This version was close to the arcade version. When I saw this game available for rental at Blockbuster, I was saying to myself, "A SEGA game on a Nintendo?! How could it be so?" Then I played the SEGA Master System version of this game. It eschewed the arcade port and went the Zelda route with the flip-screen. The 2-player version was an alternating mode.

Hey man, I just beat TMNT & silver surfer recently, which alot of people seem to say are top 10 hardest NES games. Rolling thunder took me twice, maybe three times as long to beat, way harder imo. How come that game never makes anyone's "hardest" lists. I'm curious what your personal top 10 hardest NES is. Love the channel btw

Better than the SMS version, and also most computer ones save for the X68000. Scrolling is good, not wonky like that in the C64 or Amiga. The original bosses in the second half of the game are actually decent. Tengen even managed to come up with a much creepier final boss than the arcade.
