Music Production - Simon Gooding & Hammerhead at Roundhead Studios New Zealand Mastered by Samuel K Sproull in Melbourne, Australia
“In 1820, the great Northern War Chief Hongi Hika departed New Zealand for England. On his return, he brought with him the word of God and hundreds of muskets. Things would never be the same again …”
… so begins the video for Alien Weaponry’s new single, ‘Kai Tangata’.
The title literally translates to ‘Eat People’; and refers to the ancient Māori tradition of eating the flesh of their enemies after battle in order to insult them. It is also an ancient term for a war party.
In their epic 7-minute song, the thrash metal trio recreates the memory of the early 19th Century musket wars, where Ngapuhi (Northern) tribes, newly armed with muskets, attacked and decimated the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa (Central North Island) ancestors, who at that time were still using traditional weaponry.
The driving riff that carries the song echoes the pounding footsteps of the war party, while the chorus traces the parts of the full body moko (tattoo) traditionally worn by Māori warriors. The images are of brutal hand-to-hand combat and the taking of slaves, with flashes of white teeth reminding us of the eventual fate of those unfortunate captives.
“Some people might find it a bit grisly,” says singer and lead guitarist Lewis de Jong. “But it’s stuff that actually happened and nobody ever talks about it. We’re not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s just a part of our history.”
The song refers to ‘nga tohu a Tūmatauenga’ (the symbols of Tūmatauenga - the Māori god of war), and it is from this deity that the band’s debut album, Tū, takes its name.
“Quite a few of the songs on the album are about battles or conflict,” says drummer Henry de Jong, who was largely responsible for the lyrics of Kai Tangata. “So we thought it was appropriate to name the album after Tūmatauenga. Tū also means to stand strong and proud, to stand for something; which we think is important as a band and as people.”
The video has special significance for the band due to the locations and people involved. Parts of the clip were filmed at the Waipu Caves, not far from where the band members live. The rest was filmed in the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa tribal territory; and many of the people featured - including the kapa haka group Te Matarae i Orehu - are members of their Ngati Pikiao whanau (family) and their wider Te Arawa iwi (tribe).

"Waah they're too white or Caucasian to do this.." - *Jesus, shuuutup* In New Zealand its normal and common to be half Maori or other Polynesian group. Even the 'whitest' kiwis have Polynesian blood. These boys even have family members in this vid since one of their parents is Maori. Hell, most Maori have Scottish surnames! Everybody is expected to take part in Maori culture regardless of ethnicity- we sing Maori since primary school right to high school, all boys are expected to belt out the haka and if anything, everything has been positive from NZ for these young blokes for sharing it to the world. Before you comment about their skin colour- yes they are ethnically Maori. So shut your arse and give your face a chance before dumb assumptions come out.

As a Kiwi this has been something that has riddled our country and we are just starting to get over it now with all the old ways of thinking disappearing. This music video and story they tell is a very accurate representation of what happened when Muskets where introduced to the Maori when they always fought with hand to hand combat or Taiaha (The stick weapon) which is extremely effective in warfare and close combat. Muskets sometimes stood no chance against these (wooden weapons) they were the Ninjas of the bush and inventors of Trench Warfare. But muskets tore the Maori apart. They already were pretty bad with the eating other tribes and warfare across the land and Muskets only made it worse.

Pakeha Maori are very common especially in Northland, but that doesn't make them any less Maori. I am from the same town these boys are from and I can happily say they have done their Whakapapa proud! And is it just me, or does the Maori dialect suit Metal music like a glove? Its a very aggressive sounding language, it's beautiful. Kia Kaha!

In an award acceptance speech, drummer Henry De Jong said they wanted to keep Maori alive in New Zealand. These guys did way more than that. They are taking Maori global. To put it into perspective, I love this band, they're my new favorite. I'm in Texas in the U.S. playing their CD in my car, driving down the road singing along with the Maori lyrics... Just found these guys after listing to Hu-Wolf Totem! Love this kind of cultural music. We need this now more than ever. Have great respect for the Maori. When my sons were about 13 or 14 they went on exchange program from the States to live in a Maori village for 3 weeks. They learned so much. These great people fed and taught my sons about there way of life, kept them safe and cared for. I have nothing but respect and thankfulness to the Maori for this. My sons are grown now,but they still talk and remember what they were taught and told. In these times in the world it's great to know that my sons were given tools to use, compassion and understanding caring and love for peoples around the world but the Maori will always hold a special place in there hearts and mine. Thank you💯❤️

I went to what I can only assume was one of their first live gigs... They started in Whangarei, NZ. I saw them for the first time at Rockquest 2011 because some of my mates had entered the contest (Its like a music talent show for kids between the ages of 11 and 18, and i think it was that year). They were so baby back then, maybe 13 years old? We started a big ol' mosh pit and all of the parents who were there to watch their kids do some generic Ed Sheerany bs were horrified by the overly enthused teenage metal heads going hard out for this band, Security eventually had to break up all of our ruckus causing behaviour :) They came back and played the year after in the same contest and we were all there especially to see them. I can honestly say it's been an honour seeing these lads grow up, Meeting them, going to some of their earliest gigs at The Butter Factory, just yeah... It's just so so rad that they have such a big following now and we all called it from the beginning
