“In 1820, the great Northern War Chief Hongi Hika departed New Zealand for England. On his return, he brought with him the word of God and hundreds of muskets. Things would never be the same again …”
… so begins the video for Alien Weaponry’s new single, ‘Kai Tangata’.
The title literally translates to ‘Eat People’; and refers to the ancient Māori tradition of eating the flesh of their enemies after battle in order to insult them. It is also an ancient term for a war party.
In their epic 7-minute song, the thrash metal trio recreates the memory of the early 19th Century musket wars, where Ngapuhi (Northern) tribes, newly armed with muskets, attacked and decimated the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa (Central North Island) ancestors, who at that time were still using traditional weaponry.
The driving riff that carries the song echoes the pounding footsteps of the war party, while the chorus traces the parts of the full body moko (tattoo) traditionally worn by Māori warriors. The images are of brutal hand-to-hand combat and the taking of slaves, with flashes of white teeth reminding us of the eventual fate of those unfortunate captives.
“Some people might find it a bit grisly,” says singer and lead guitarist Lewis de Jong. “But it’s stuff that actually happened and nobody ever talks about it. We’re not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s just a part of our history.”
The song refers to ‘nga tohu a Tūmatauenga’ (the symbols of Tūmatauenga - the Māori god of war), and it is from this deity that the band’s debut album, Tū, takes its name.
“Quite a few of the songs on the album are about battles or conflict,” says drummer Henry de Jong, who was largely responsible for the lyrics of Kai Tangata. “So we thought it was appropriate to name the album after Tūmatauenga. Tū also means to stand strong and proud, to stand for something; which we think is important as a band and as people.”
The video has special significance for the band due to the locations and people involved. Parts of the clip were filmed at the Waipu Caves, not far from where the band members live. The rest was filmed in the de Jong brothers’ Te Arawa tribal territory; and many of the people featured - including the kapa haka group Te Matarae i Orehu - are members of their Ngati Pikiao whanau (family) and their wider Te Arawa iwi (tribe).

yeh mate these guys are the future of metal - huge year last year at euro and US festivals. When they recorded this the two guitarists were 16 and the drummer 18!! Just recorded their second album and touring NZ to release it shortly. When covid dies down they are a must see world wide. Bass guitarist has stepped down so have a new bass player. He found touring a strectch being away from NZ and family. Shame cos hes a beast.

I would like to introduce you to three boys from New Zealand, Lewis De Jong (guitar/vocals), Henry De Jong (drums/vocals) & Ethan Trembath (bass/vocals) At the time this video was done Lewis & Ethan were 16 & Henry was 18. They have won so many awards, but their most prized achievement was playing at Wacken Open Air Festival. They achieved this goal when they played on the Wasteland Stage in 2018 (Henry was 18, Lewis & Ethan were 16). The reviews of that festival praised these 3 boys as one of the top acts to play that year & the best to ever play on the Wasteland stage. They formed the band when Lewis was 8 & Henry was 10 in 2010. I believe Ethan joined the band in 2012 when he was 12. I would suggest "Ru Ana Te Whenua" with the closed caption turned on. The rhythm of the song makes a whole lot more sense if you understand what they are singing. So many other reactors have not done so & are very confused by the rhythm. I would also suggest "Hypocrite", the video is in english & shows how young they were when they did this song. Lewis & Ethan were 12 & Henry was 14. If you really enjoy this band, might I suggest that you take a look at some of the documentaries done about them, because of their youth, their talent & their use of the Maori language. You can find all their videos & documentaries on their RU-vid channel. Thank you, young man, for doing this video of this outstanding young band.

These guys grew up in a native school where only Maori was taught they are fluent. Tribes went to war frequently faces and bodies were heavily tattooed so you saw up close who you were fighting as all weapons were hand held muskets tipped the balance and were used to settle old grievances going back hundreds of years. This type of metal appears to lend itself to the energy of ancient warfare shown in the video.

Akien weaponry guys are half Caucasian and half Maori native. They are singing in the native language: Te Reo. They are also very young, I think their oldest member is 21. The song is all about a battle and Maori warriors in general. Kai Tangata means cannibalism, and Maori warriors considered it incredibly humiliating to be eaten by a foe after they were vanquished in battle. Maori would eat their foes just for the psychological warfare. That's the reason they stick out their tongues, it is a taunt, like "I'm going to be tasting your flesh later." The chorus mostly is listing the different areas warriors would be tattooed. The sacred tattoos are called ta moko. One line of the chorus, te uhi o Mataora (the chisel of Mataora) refers to the legend of Mataora, a warrior who journeyed into the underworld and returned with the secrets of the sacred ta moko, which are applied with a chisel and mallet. You'll absolutely love falling in the Maori rabbit hole if this song inspires you to do so. Obviously it did for me lol (indigizu9).

I highly recommend that you listen to some of their other stuff. Ahi Ka is a great song, Whispers too. To be honest, they haven’t produced a huge amount yet so I would take an hour out of your life and just listen to it all, the album (Tū) and then follow single (Ahi Kā), they’re epic!!!!!

Such respect for these teen kids!!! They play metal and their songs about the Maori legends and misfortunes to help preserve their culture that is slowly being eradicated in this modern world. Not a great fan of thrash metal usually but this song is great and when you think about TEENS doing this well just amazing. Them Asterism (Japan) and The Warning (Mexico) are the 3 Teen bands that really stand out for their musicianship and their stage presence. Great reaction and all their songs tell a tale or a story and the fact they sing in their Maori language is just awesome since only 4% of New Zealand can even speak it today!!!
