We finally have Aliens (1986) from James Cameron on 4K UHD disc! I review the movie and the Dolby Atmos soundtrack of the movie. Aliens 4K amzn.to/3xvp7Ew
Hi, just came across your channel. I am the biggest Atmos fan. over the yearsI’ve heard so many people complain about it, and allude that it doesn’t add much or just speakers overhead something to that effect. which is just crazy to me the first time I heard it my jaw dropped. I couldn’t believe the difference and unfortunately I have the most basic of a Atmos set up relatively high end gear, but due to room constraints, a 5.2.2 is what I have and the .2 is just front heights on the front wall not overhead, but the difference is night and day. As to the sound from aliens, at least two of the scenes you described are added footage from the theatrical release my best guess is the source material was never mixed in multi channel and it just carries over as left right and Center not saying that it could’ve been mixed but for whatever reason it wasn’t pure speculation on my part of course. keep up the great work and have a great one.👍
Im glad you found the channel! Great to have you here. I’m the same way. I heard Atmos and was immediately convinced. If you ever decide to look into adding height speakers to your setup, you might consider using bookshelf speakers. I made a video explaining how I installed bookshelf speakers on my ceiling as Heights. Thanks for watching! @@GeorgeTheaterAtHome funny you mention that I am planning to add 2 overhead speakers directly overhead and I just watched the video where you added, the bookshelf speakers, my main speakers are golden ear reference with the matching center channel so I’m probably going to do the 650s overhead should do the job nicely. Unfortunately my pre-pro is broken. I have to send it for repair so I’ve been Atmos less for a couple weeks now.🙁 just got the abyss looks great, but of course no Atmos but I understand the mix is very comparable to aliens. Can’t wait to hear both of them going to check out some of your older videos. Have a good one.👍
Yes, the audio was done in stereo for Dolby Pro-Logic surround decoding in 1986. Standard procedure for upgrading these tracks to today's multi-channel formats like Atmos is going back to source files, panning them around to the different channels and recording new sounds to augment or replace some of the previous sounds.
The theatrical cut has the option to hear the original discrete 4.1 mix. While the Atmos mix is still fresh, would you consider listening to that mix and do a comparison? Aside from the added channels, were certain sound effects added or missing? How the music to effects overall balance is in each one? Was one more dynamic than the other?
I’ve got the other 2 James Cameron films lined up for my next two videos. But I’ll see if I can do a comparison after I’ve finished those 2. Thanks for watching!
You definitely should! I made a video how to install Atmos speakers. It’s worth it! How to install Dolby Atmos speakers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dsd1iiMGVBo.html
Thanks for the audio review. Certainly the reason I would be buying it. I think if you threw any level of Epson super res at this disk it would improve that smoothed disk image some are complaining about. Best line in the movie from the late Bill is a toss up between"We got Guuuns, Kniiives, Sharps sticks" and "Game over man, game over!"
I agree pretty much with everything you said about the audio in this review, I also experienced the same as you did. Very happy with the results of this mix, didn't disappoint at all and is pretty much what I would have hoped for with this classic.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome also agree with the video assessment as well, and without opening a can of worms here, I also agree, that I thought it looked great. Curious, how loud is your projector fan? Does that interfere at all when listening?
The only time the projector is audible is when the room is totally silent. And even then I don’t notice it. I do run it on the “eco” setting so that is the lowest fan setting.
Sir, what is the speaker configuration of ur dolby atmos set up? In my 5.1.2 set up I did find more differences of OTT movies sound from ht chanel spkr. Dolby atmos movies of blue ray disc are better than ott movies for sound effect?
When you listen to 5.1 source you upmix to 7.1? I am Not Sure, cause when i prefer native 5.1 my Rears would Go to the Side.So maybe a downgrade from my 5.1 ,where the Surrounds are behind a bit on the Sides.
That's pretty good review 👍 I'm looking forward to watching it tonight. . I just got all 3 movies in yesterday. I watched Abyss last night, the surround sound was outstanding. Did you watch Aliens extended version or theatrical version?
If I was hiring a sound mixer, the first question I would ask.. so what kind of speaker configuration do you happen to have at home. It should be standard procedure!
Some people's expectations were too high with these new, long-awaited James Cameron 4K releases to begin with. You can't please everybody! Personally, I'm not going to complain about any of these releases because I've waited too long for them. If they were good enough for James Cameron to be approved for their 4K releases, they will be good enough for me. I would rather have True Lies, The Abyss and Aliens in 4K then not have them at all because I don't stream. I prefer physical media.
I remember the times, years back when they're asked for True Lies and Aliens release in 4k.Now it is here, people started to give negative feedback. What is wrong with these people?Just accept and enjoy it.
You can’t give a movie an A if it has uneven sound effects. The fact that they omitted great sound effects in the beginning or simply screwed up and learned how to finally do it right makes it incapable of receiving an A rating.
I'd give it an A- as I would have liked more LFE and a couple more ATMOSpheric effects, but I think for the age of this film it's slightly better than a B+.
