I am probably being overly cautious about the spilled electrolyte. But when exposed to water, it can create a small amount of hydrogen fluoride. Look up what that stuff does to a human. I am deathly scared of it, and the electrolyte spills always leave a nasty residue that I can never remove. I know it takes some take for it to react to the moisture in the area, and the amount of hf formed is small, but I don't want a single molecule of that stuff in my blood. Call me crazy for replacing my desk, but look up the images of people exposed to that stuff. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Does off-grid solar confuse you? As a related thought, the "new and improved" AC refrigerant mandated by the EPA in 2018 is called r1234yf. It's flammable, and when burned it decomposes into hydrogen fluoride as well. Yikes!

That's a very good base instinct. Back in the 90's I worked as a machine developer for the printing industry, and some components (activators) in the chemicals used for/in electroplating Cu with Cr had a high content of hydrofluoric acid. In Sweden we had only had one serious incident with it, but showing images of the medical results of it to new workers sure made them think twice about how they handled chrome plating primers. Nasty stuff!

I have LiitoKala batteries for about 3 years now. The batteries are 18650 and it is declared 3500mah but in fact it has 3000mah. I was very skeptical about these batteries but now they have proven to me that they are actually good quality and durable. After several years of use and charging up to 4.2V, (for e-cigarettes) their capacity dropped from 3000 to 2800, which is actually great.

For the price, this still beats a lot of 100AH batteries. So if you ignore the 120AH label and just consider it a 100AH battery I could justify this. (note that it almost never gets below freezing in my area so cold temp sensor isn't that big a deal for me).

this company also markets a 100AH. bet it only tests around 85-90 😂 it's like TrustFire got into the lifeso4 business with ever exaggerated capacities. maybe they're really 120AH cells but they cut off charging early to extend cycle life, but decided to advertise the nominal capacity? I doubt it.

Lead acid batteries have battery acid, but the LiFeSO4 have other nasty chemicals. Polyethylene drop cloth would probably be a better bet. Tyvek is slightly porous as a trade-off for the breathability so stuff would eventually soak through.

The solvents used in the newer LiFePO4 cells are not as hazardous as the solvents that used to be used. Heck brake parts cleaner is worse for you than the solvents that are used now and people use brake parts cleaner all the time without issue as long as good ventilation is provided. You still want to minimize or eliminate the breathing and bare skin handling of the solvents but as long as you treat it like a spill of just about any flammable solvent you will be fine. You don't need to replace your desk as the solvent will evaporate so just air out the room and wipe the desk down with soap and water and it will be fine. Treat it just like if you broke a fluorescent bulb, it's not a big deal, you just follow basic safety and cleanup procedures. It doesn't require extreme hazardous waste disposal just drain the power of the damaged cell or cells and store it in a vented container until you have enough cells to justify a battery recycling pickup and then place the leaking cell in a couple sealed bags and mark it as leaking cell and handoff to the recycler. The only time you need to deal with the cell being hazardous waste is if you need to ship it back for a warranty or something.

Hey Will, I own a fleet of ICE cars and I have converted all of them over to LiFePO4 with Headway 38120HP cells and will never go back to lead acid. I have a 25kg light commercial truck/van battery in my garage that I tested to fully empty and it held just 20Ah whereas the 16AH pack in my bigger-engined cars weighs just 2.8kg and starts the engines better. In short, lead acid isn't even good for that! :-D

The lowest temp where I live is 18⁰C hence low temp charging is not an issue. I want batteries with max capacity and low cost. Thanks for the review.

If you look on the LiitoKala Official Flagship Store, rather than the LiitoKala Official Store you may notice that is says 120Ah (10A). I doubt it will make that much difference though. Interestingly, the 100Ah version is in a larger case and weighs 10Kg compared to the 120Ah version's 11Kg so on paper it sounds like it might be a better choice.

I currently use lead acid but they are just car batteries that dropped enough CCA and would no longer start my wife's SUV consistently or batteries donated that still work pretty well. I will be switching to lithium as soon as I actually start buying batteries for my set up. lol

As Always....Great review! I wanted to say that a good lead acid battery will cost around 200 bucks now days. With that being said this battery still has more bang for the buck considering its physical size and ah. I guess the real test would be to see how long it would last and how many cycles. Thanks Will

I just bought one of these for my dad to use together with an UPS. I was looking for something cheap and not lead-acid. There was no review at the time so I just went with it. Mine was $240 with shipping so I have no regrets. I was only curious to see the build quality and I think it's decent for the price and OK if the capacity is at least 100 Ah and it will last some hundreds if not 1000 cycles it's more than OK for an UPS. Overall I'm quite happy with the purchase.

Maybe make a sacrificial cover for your bench that you only use for dissecting batteries like this. Perhaps getting a piece of seconds of solid surface material (e.g. Corian), or maybe a sheet of stainless steel.

Thanks for the content, I would say LitoKala is a nice brand for the price point if you can't afford the best, but still need this for something, 100A is not to bad and this can be replaced easily if it last for at least few years as LiIon cells might behave.

I'm in the process of building a small system for my vehicle. Space is very limited, so I'm considering an SOK 12/100 battery due to its small footprint as well as its quality. Its a bit pricey, but like you said you get what you pay for.

Would this be good for occasional camping use? Planning to use it for LED lights, charging my phone, camping fridge and a small fan. Will not be using it for anything with high current. Will most likely be charged between 2A (car cig lighter socket) to 30A (small solar).

Hey @DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse, great videos & reviews! Do you know if any solar generators and or portable compressor fridge/freezers have two-way USB-C power delivery/input? USB-C with its two-way 100-watt power delivery seems like such an elegant solution for power delivery/charging. If not are there reasons not to? Many thanks in advance.

Tight packing is defiantly a big no no. Even if you don't plan on rebuilding a premade lithium iron phosphate battery if say the BMS dies. (Which is strong possibility in a cheap battery) You could still sell/gift the dead battery to someone who's willing to open it up and repair it. So please either build your own or invest in a battery that can be opened if something goes wrong.

Man, you really pound on these batteries!! I get super afraid to even put a metallic tool into them, let alone pound on it. I had to cut that last one open with a dremel and it took me over an hour to get it open. Even then, I still ended up damaging it and had to pay to dispose of it unfortunately...

Lithium iron phosphate won't explode or combust when exposed to oxygen, like lithium ion, but who knows what they might put in these cheap batteries.

@joansparky4439

You doing it wrong. You need to take the cycles and capacity a lead acid has compared to one of those. LAB: 50% Depth of Discharge & ~1000 cycles VS LiFePO4: 100% Depth of Discharge 2000+ cycles. So a LiFePO4 can be 4 times as expensive as a similarly labelled LAB and they are EQUAL (weight is in favor of the LiFePO4, a 1/3rd of the LAB). But with LiFePO4 coming in at twice the price of a similar labelled LAB nowadays, the LAB actually are *twice* as expensive.

I spend 75 a piece at Walmart every two years on two lead acid everstart battery’s for my class c motorhome and there’s a Walmart everywhere I go so when and if one takes a crap I bring it in set it on the counter they give me another. When and if it’s common place and cheap and reliable like that most people will adopt it till then it’s a no go for most it’s like that with all new stuff not just batteries however I’m excited where it’s all going
