Can chevy journals be machined? The thrust journal in specific? The 3/8-16 oil pump tap is real loose on my build. So i was thinking of drilling and taping a 7/16-20NF. Im asking because i went to do just that but as soon as the drill bit contacted the journal it was sent flying across the room. Leaving me to believe its a very hard journal. So can they be drilled and tapped without annealing them? Thanks

I have a question. I hope you can answer. The fact that you can slide the honing tool into the bores, necessarily means at the top, there is no pressure on the stones. This, in turn, means the cutting action happens from the top (actually the center point, when circle geometry is considered) down. Aside from moving the crank center point up in the engine (because the block is upside down while honing) wouldn't this cause the bearing holes simply elongate in the vertical direction, instead of opening in every direction? In other words, how do you account for, and counteract the effect of gravity? Rotating the block instead of, or while honing, seems a solution.

Hi Joe. Thanks for your question and sorry for the delayed response. You are correct in your concern about gravity working against the precision of the process. The countermeasure is to have a very rigid mandrel that will not sag within the required level of precision. The Sunnen align hone has been the industry standard for many decades and performs very well in the right hands. Dart Machinery will obviously process far more blocks than any engine builder. They have a vertical CNC hone. Dart’s volume allows them to justify the machine’s extreme cost based on its very high speed/short cycle time. Precision is an added benefit. A skilled machinist can achieve the same level of precision but Dart’s will do it consistently in a small fraction of the time required on a manual machine. My engine bearings seized and left mild scratches on the main caps can I still hone them or are they no good?

How to maintain a clearence of say 2 th of an inch but in alignment for all seems like it would need new bearing caps but then be oversized.

Thanks for the question. The answer is that it depends. You can cut the caps and shrink the vertical distance between the cap and the bottom of the main saddle. However, the lateral distance is still as wide as it was making the hole oval shaped. Depending on the application and the bearings, a little distortion is tolerable. The bigger problem is if you start taking to much material out of the block while chasing the problem causing other issues like changing the crank to cam distance and causing fitment problems with side bolted caps like the OE LS blocks.

There are some King bearings that can help with that as well. Of course its all depending on several variables like how big is too big. As stated there is a point of no return.

I've never understood align boring or honking. In order to straighten all holes in alignment wouldnt you have to use offset bearings. There is no such thing. I can see making the bores bigger and even then don't you need an oversized bearing set. What if the bores are or some are pulled to the side a few thousands of an inch and you need to only align one or two. What tool does that if the caps in the middle are misaligned. We're talking about tiny amounts of clearences needed for the bearings to have a suspension for the oil.
