History of the Khlong Toei market
The story of the Klong Toei market goes along with how Klong Toei district, Bangkok’s biggest slum came to existence. The name of the place Khlong Toei comes from the Toei or pandan leaves. As Toei leaves abundantly grew around the area, the aromatic smell of it wandered around the canal, hence the place got its name Khlong Toei (Canal of Pandan). Unfortunately, the smell of the pandan leaves have wafted away but the name stuck around.
The Khlong Toei district situated on the land owned by the Port Authority of Thailand. Residents of that area first settled there in 1950s, looking for work. There was a huge requirement of cheap labor in the capital at that time. The city had come up with a land rent system which made many people move there to find work and settle on a land with a very low cost. However, the city grew incredibly in the 1970s and the system started failing as landowners begin to build condominiums or other new ventures on their land instead of the local people. The people of Khlong Toei started working as labors in the Port Authority of Thailand and opened up shops to sell the products that was shipped in. This practice grew and soon enough a wide market formed along the canal, with a juxtaposition of food stalls that can impress anybody passing by.
