For this you use 15g of KOH to 50mL water and a 20% solution of PVA by weight and mix the two solutions in a 1 to 1 ratio - sorry if i confused this on the vid - i am ill lol

This was very helpful and very easy to make, I couldn't find any video better than this.

I don't know how old this video is. I think it was done before the invention of eye ware because Robert would never put the most important organ he has like his eye's in danger like this man has done. Just getting a splatter POTASIUM HYDROXIDE OR SODIUM HYDROXIDE into the Eye's causes Blindness darn fast. So don't do what this Robert look alike is doing. Always wear Eye Protection People. Thanks Robert look alike for the Battery upload. I do Appreciate your knowledge and the sharing of such knowledge.

potassium hydroxide can be made from rain water and the white ash out of the fireplace if you are burning hard woods. The recipe for making p.v.a. glue is all over the place and is wheat flour and water. The metal can be recycled from other things. This could be very cost effective.

A super video Robert, thank you. This is important for electric vehicles, so we dont have KOH splashing around if we have an accident. How does this affect battery efficiency and gassing off of hydrogen and oxygen? Many thanks.

this is a rather old video, but a reasonable question to ask might be how well hydrated does this gel remain in a working environment? The other question to ask is Can you use this in a bipolar arrangement to increase cell voltage in Nickel-Iron batteries? For alkaline fuel cell membranes, I've seen PVA/PVP/KOH used to make quite thick membranes. Are there any disadvantages to using Titanium Oxide? Thanks!

5 years old yet still fresh, so is this how some of the first sold state batteries came to be? +/- of course.

I find your videos very interesting...why couldn't you use graphite or graphene or carbon to increase conductivity?

.....hmmm, curious about titanium dioxide addition also helps to improve it, I thought titanium oxide was inert

Hi there sir, I've watch most of your videos and really gain so much..not just in terms of knowledge but also inspiration. It seem there have been a question in my mind as I was wondering that I could use this Alkaline Gel solution(since it contain mostly of KOH, which is my electrolyte) for my aluminium air battery, which will then be place on the aluminium.On top of that,there would be a layer of activated carbon (powdered). I would really appreciate it if I could get some advice from an expert like you. Thanks.

sounds like a good plan - a good electrolyte would be a 7.5 molar aqueous potassium hydroxide solution containing 0.1 mole of sodium stannate and 2-3 ppm "Dowex 1410" anti-foaming agent - or similar.

I'm thinking coating carbon on aluminium anode to increase capacity. Also use of sodium potassium tartaric salt to complex any aluminate formed from ambient moisture..

Will it work for hydrogen electrolytic cell? if you sandwich it between two platinum plates and pump h2 on 1 side and oxygen on the other side of the cell? Great job on all the videos btw! thanks

The wet battery lasts 20 years, how long will the gel last before it disintigrates or cracks up?

Hi Robert, love your vids, I was wondering if this gel would prevent the KOH from converting to K2CO3, thanks.

Can other electrolytes like Salt Water NaCl, KMnO4 and hcl also be used to make dry electrolytes in a similar process!

i was going to make a redox battery.. i wonder if you can use this for that also? Nafion is what everyone recommends, but i even heard nafion has trouble sometimes.

Correction: 15g KOH + 50mL water gives a 23% solution, not 30%.

I have 20 Edison Edison batteries I need to change the electrolyte in about 10 or 11 to make them 12 volt I have been struggling to figure the ratio of potassium hydroxide to distilled water for the 21 % if anyone could help please reply thanks

you could simply use white glue, I would think.

Hey Robert! I did this experiment using carpenter's glue, but when mixing the solutions I got something with an orange juice consistency (part liquid / part solid mix). Did I miss something?

+Gilberto Morais probably mate - did you check the patent?
@gilbertomorais8118
@gilbertomorais8118 8 лет назад
+Robert Murray-Smith I did and now it works, thanks. Turns out my PVA was too diluted already I just added more and it worked. I noticed the cell keeps holding less and less charge over time, do you know if you are supposed to seal batteries made out of this, or should it work just as good if exposed to air?
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 8 лет назад
+Gilberto Morais they need sealing mate - there are likely to be a couple of reasons you are experiencing capacity fade - one is drying out the other is irreversible side reactions - one is easy to cure - the second not so much lol
@gilbertomorais8118
@gilbertomorais8118 8 лет назад
+Robert Murray-Smith Happy new year! On this experiment I did a 2V cell but it only lasted for a day, after that it only stored like 5 mA of current at top end. I opened it up and it was all rusty. Oh no its the bloody electrolysis oxidizing my batteries again! lol Too bad you can't use this completely dry, I was hoping to get rid of the H2O so you could easily reach voltages higher than 1.2V. Maybe its easier to just get rid of the iron, I thought about replacing it with a conductive plastic but they will just probably melt at higher voltages due to the higher current. Of course you can limit the current but then the charging will be very slow. To overcome this looks like only a solid graphene electrode doubling as a heat pipe will do the trick.
@ThinkingandTinkering
@ThinkingandTinkering 8 лет назад
+Gilberto Morais oxidation is no problem mate - after all batteries run on redox reactions - it's if they are reversible or not that is the problem
